It surprises me that when i ask my NCOs this question then my joes, i get different answers. Are Soldiers not being taught that their leaders actually care. Do you have stripe wearers among your pack? Is this just a check the block for some? Are troops just not wanting to have people in their business and why is this such a bad habbit?

Of my NCOs:
1) The other SSG is a registered nurse and in his off time he spends time with his 2 sons, goes trail bike riding and likes to do those SPARTAN and TOUGH MUDDER races.
2) One of my SGTs like to travel and help others (she is currently in Bali helping the locals), she is also going to school to get her degree in medicine so she can be a physician for the Army. She also like to teach Zumba classes.
3) My other SGT is currently working on extending his already exiting pilots license. He flies puddle jumpers but is working on his certs for bigger frames. He is also trying to save money for his gf's engagement/wedding ring. On their spare time, they love to travel the world. Just recently they went to Hawaii.
4) Got a CPL that LOVES to work out. I think he is addicted to it. He currently spends his spare time outside of working going back and forth from Pocatello and American Fork to spend time with his gf.

Of my Junior Enlisted:
Most (if not all) love travelling and camping all over the country and the state of Utah. 1 is in school for Vet services, another just got a degree in dietetics. Another is a culinary student, but working for UPS to pay the bills. Several love playing the video games. Many just spend their time working and spending time with family and loved ones.

I had a great Battalion Commander who knew every SM's Birthday, anniversary and even children's B'days. He would approach us, give us a card and say "Tell your wife I said Happy Birthday" It showed he cared. I tried to emulate him later in my career.
