I have been a member of the American Legion Riders for 8 years now. The Riders is a excellant group for a riding club if you want to get together with fellow veterans on bikes and do a benefit run. They also support the Legacy Fund for the American Legion which provides scholarship money to children of fallen service men and women for a full 4 years term. This is part of many things they do. Yes it does take some dedication but it really depends on the Post Program as to how in depth they require the time of its members.
However I also belong to a MC known as the MILITARY COHORTS. WE are a small group of veterans who have decidied to start our own club after some issues in trying to deal with other veteran MC clubs in the New England area. We are a new club right now of less then a year but have 10 members growing to more then 20 in the near future. These guys are my family, they have been there for me in many ways other riding clubs are not. We are not a 1% club and never will be but just a bunch of veterans who want to look out for each other as we did when we were deployed or in battle. The requirement for membership is the ame as joining any American Legion Post, and must be honorably discharged. There is not a requirement to be a combat vet at all. First interaction with some of these motorcycle groups came out of Dover AFB, DE. Everyone knows Dover AFB is were are fallen come on their first leg home. Let me give you some more insight. The Dover AFB Team bring back the fallen with honors and dignity. As a Security Force members, we escorting the remains to and from the A/C to the Mortuary. We also make sure DVs and families are escorted as well. I have had the privilege and honor of ensuring the escort by Hurst is done correctly as well. See when it comes time for the fallen from NJ, DE, some of MD, PA and VA to go home they are escorted by local Police and motorcycle groups. The groups consist of Combat Vets, Buffalo Soldiers, Patriot Riders and even the Pagans. There are other groups who do the same but these are the most remembered to me. I ensured they are lined up and waiting on the Hurst to leave the installation. It is an awesome sight to see and hear these groups leave Dover. Makes you choked up inside and PROUD to be an AMERICAN. With this I have made several contacts and friends who I still keep in contact with today. The most is when all three groups showed up at the same time to escort a Marine from NJ. Pure professionalism by all. Most riders I meet ride on the weekends don't focus on the skills and habits and are not people I want to ride with in close quarters.

Riding is fun which means I want to ride with people who enjoy it as much as I do, so I most often ride alone. This is one more reason that riding is like sex. Mother chapter is in philadelphia and we have chapters in multiple states. We wear the traditional back patch but lower rocker isnt a territorial claim. My rockers are U.S. Army , top and Veteran bottom . We use side small rockers to show chapter affiliation. We are probably a 50/50 split between military and patriots and have quite a few female riders. We also have a sister group call A Heros Welcome started by a female Marine Capt. who thought the returning military from the current conflicts were not being honored for their service so started the group approx in 2007 and have received hundreds of requests for welcome homes and escorts .
