I don't have any though I of course understand the reason SVC mbrs get them, of course, it's just thay with all the potential worry over whether they'd be acceptable now, I freq wonder whether, in reading stuff about them on here, whether those who get them ever wonder about the necessity and or mechanisms to possibly have them removed, at some point, you know? Just a thought, hope was of interest, I realize many on here I've asked that say they'd never have them removed, just was curious as to the thoughts of those who might see this, many thanks. Removing them is often lengthy, complex, and can be painful, that's the only other reason I'd also been curious, honest.

Im not opposed to it, in fact I would kinda like to get one jut as a fact to commemorate the period of my life that I am in. That being said I have no clue what I would actually get as a quartermaster. Maybe the QM crest over a DA 2062 background lol. Also some people like to go full hooah and display their entire ERB either through tats or bumper stickers. Whenever I see that it looks douchey and makes me second guess it.

I grew up around men who had served in WWII and Korea and a great number of them had service tattoos - anchors, jump wings etc. Usually on the forearms and the back of their hands. Sailors tended to have more of them. By the time I served in the mid Sixties they were getting rare and during the time I served in SF the policy there was that if you had one when you got here, okay but no new ones. Had to do with deniability or some such. Could, and did, limit your selection for certain adventures. So I didn't have any while on AD and haven't had the urge to get any since.

Sgt Seth Welch I consider my tattoos service and serious; and others may consider their tattoos service related as well based on their perception. On one arm I Have my deployment tattoo and the my Brigade Coin/Motto tattoo as well. On the other I have an eagle which represents what I retired as (Full Bird), my wife's name, and recently just added the name of my three daughters and their month and birth year. Now those are service and serious tattoos for me! Next on the other forearm I'm adding: US Army in BOLD on the outside and on the inside the Warriors Creed (as depicted in the example), but it will different in many ways!

I have several tattoos and always wanted to get a service connected tattoo, just never knew what to get. I've seen several examples from service members that I've worked with and not many I liked. Any tattoo to commemorate loss of life or deployments I am a fan of, but I have not experienced either. I guess I'll try to come up with a sweet American flag idea?

I have an Eagle and Anchor on my right shoulder. No problem, yea. About a year latter I went home on leave and when I took off my jumper my mother who had just come into the room started shouting and crying when she saw the tat. My dad ever so cool told her to relax ' wasn't a naked girl or a girl name". The artist that did the tattoo was Lyle Tuttle was since then 1963 has become famous.

Not a fan at all, especially on women. I'm of the age when only bikers, prisoners, sailors, and the occasional Vietnam veteran had them but they became more popular along with male ear piercing, so I thought it was a fad that would end soon. But I was only half right. Even the good ones remind me of a little kid writing on himself with magic marker. Along with the blue/pink/purple hair, social media, and a host of other things, it seems to be just the oldest in the "hey look at me" phenomenon, which we all do to one degree or another. I realize it's largely a generational thing and I'm in the minority. I know I sound ancient when I say I think it looks unprofessional but the times change. For me it's like having a particular bumper sticker on your car and you have to keep the car the rest of your life. But to each his own.

I can only speak for myself but I am proud of mine and wouldn't change anything about it. It is amazing how many times conversations have started with other veterans because of it. I was proud to have served and have no shame whatsoever in having others know it. That being said, my tattoos are for me alone and I don't go out with the idea of showing them off/advertising. One in particular is a personal memorial and I prefer not to talk about it, just know that it's there.

Not a personal fan of body art. What I like today, might not be so in 5 years. Plus with my pasty-white skin ... no telling what it would look like over the years. That said, I have absolutely no problem with tattoos and military service members as long as the tattoo is not visible when the service member is in service dress uniform.

No tats here. However, honorable/discreet tattoos have been a hallmark of military men for eons. It is when they reach a tipping point of extreme images or violence that they are often viewed as the "bumper stickers of the personality"...at least by old USAF shrinks like me.

I have 2 myself and my personal opinion is they shouldn't be viewable with any type of uniform on. I have nothing against them but to me nothing looks tackier then seeing a service member in a sharp well put together uniform and then have tats showing or parts of a tat showing. You can honor your unit, your battle buddies, whatever but be discreet about it. That's my 2cents worth.

Personally I think tattoos are unprofessional! I get upset when my children draw on their bedroom walls; why would I carve any ink into my skin! It's a fad! Nothing else! One cannot find more viable time to do with themselves!

I just have an aversion to all tattoos in general. We are exposed to so many potential toxins during our life time, why would you want to voluntarily inject a chemical under your skin? Many times, we do not find out about the toxicity of a given substance until it has been in the public domain for many years (sometimes decades). Why take the chance, especially if there is no medical necessity (or even the possibility of one)? Even certain medically approved drugs (like Chemo-therapy) have long term effects. But even then you have to weigh the medical benefits against the side effects.

I have two military tattoos, a sleeve of my left leg of original sailor jerry design with new age color and an anchor. I believe military tattoos are fine for service members because it shows are pride in military heritage and usually a great story as to where we got them. Militaries throughout history had soldiers that were tattooed so why should it be any different now

I am a retired Navy Dental Officer who served 20 years, active and reserve time in the U. S. Navy. I am 81 years old and have never had any positive thoughts about having a tattoo placed on my body. I have been to many foreign ports on liberty with my shipmates. I drank my share of alcohol with them on every liberty spree. I watched friends go into tattoo parlors and get all kinds of crazy tattoos put on their body parts when they were drunk. I never once during all of those liberty sprees ever had a desire to have a tattoo placed on my body. I always felt that once you did, you were marked for life. Today children's parents both have tattoos on their bodies. I cannot think of a way to be a poorer role model to their children than to have tattoos that children can see and believe are okay to have because their mom and dad have them on their bodies. I could not be happier about my lifetime choice to not have tattoos. I look around today and see 70-80 year old men and women with these old wrinkled tattoos on their bodies. There is nothing uglier.
I think parents owe it to their children to be the best role models that they can be. We all have the right to have our own personal opinions about things in life. These are mine about tattoos.

I never understood why military members would brand themselves so easily with tattoos that clearly identify them as military members or other. Especially for Special Operations. If you're ever captured it's a tough insignia to hide.

I wasn't allowed a tattoo while in. It was considered an identifying mark by SF. Now that I'm out I have no desire to have one.
If you do want one while in; don't be like the kid beside me in formation on the first day of Jump School. We were in our T-shirts and one of the blackhats noticed a bandage on this kid. This blackhat asked what happened and the kid told him the truth. He had a tattoo of Jump Wings on his arm. Long story short...don't ever get a tattoo for an award you haven't earned yet. Life will go a lot easier for you.
The kid? He made it. He turned into a pushup champ.

Now If you in SpecOps or frequently in enemy territory I think it will compromise you if you are being watched or abducted!

I am a heavily tattooed person.. some are military themed.. most are just what I call my portable art collection. All mine are old school/traditional type.
But I did find myself at awe at a fellow SM I was at AT with that had them on his neck and hands/fingers. It just looked so weird to see someone like that in uniform. I couldn't stop staring, I just wanted to read him like a picture book !
My husband is AD Air Force and has no tattoos.. we definitely look like the odd couple on a hot day.
There is one person I serve with who has one on his neck that just looks straight rogue along with the ear gauges he has to leave out in uniform.
Maybe I'm the pot calling the kettle here but I don't have any on my hands or the sides of my neck.
I love a nice piece of art. I just feel bad for those who have really ugly/poorly done ink.
Thank you Army for lifting your tattoo regs. Hooah !

I have USMC in Old English on my shoulder. As far as my thoughts on Service Tattoos I think it's fine to get them if the Service Member wants to. I understand why the Top Brass wants to ban them so everyone looks more "professional and friendly" P.R. Bullshit but to me just be smart have it put where clothing can cover it. It Sucks but there's still a stigma about Tattoos in the Real World so if you are going to an interview for an office gig neck,hand or finger tatts might be an issue. But if you aren't planning on Climbing that Corporate Ladder do what ever you want lol.

I have no tattoos and never will. I have my own personal reasons, but having said that I don't have a problem at all if someone wants to get service tattoos. It means they are proud of what they have done and rightfully so. The military life is not an easy one. And then there are those like I have read about ( MSgt Private RallyPoint Member ) that are memorials. That I can TOTALLY respect! Everyone has their reasons for getting them and everyone has their ways of remembering the fallen. :)

I have a few, there are is a civi job that I would love to work at, but because i have 1 tattoo on my inner forearm, if I worked there I would have to wear a bandage or longsleev to cover at work. NO THANK YOU... why would I have to do so as a local truck driver ? they can keep their job

I have 9, and I think tattoo's are an important part of military cultures, although now days since becoming a Veteran I've noticed that the subculture of tattooing is now more mainstream vs when it was typically an exclusive groups of people. Within the military, I think anything fine as far a sleeves and ect just so long as they can be covered up with the appropriate uniform

Got my first one, a very simple U.S. Army done while in AIT at Ft Sam. Others followed to build on that one. The last one though ended up being a mistake as the tattoo artist, myself and my wife had a group dyslexia attack and failed to notice the dates were wrong. My wife first noticed the error a week or so later.

I have 9 tattoos total, and all have a story or meaning behind them for different achievements or ventures in my life (equator crossing, circumnavigation, drug bust, overseas time, etc.) Not necessarily service related, but definitely wouldn't have happened without my time in. There are some people on here that say tattoos are unprofessional. Of course they are unprofessional, that's obvious, but it doesn't someone any less of a person. However, they are not a fad. Tattoos have been around for ages. All the way back to when tribes were running around in loin cloths catching wild boar trying not to get killed for the village feast. Tattoos are indications of rights of passage (achievements) in one's life. Since they are considered savage or barbaric nowadays, they get looked down on even more by a lot of people mainly because there is a choice on what someone gets inked on. I've seen some questionable tattoos, but questionable to me. That person is fine with their ink, who am I to judge them? As far as service tats, there are some really nice ones out there, and the way tattoo artists are getting now, there will be some even better ones in the future.

I never wanted one so I would be harder to notice in a crowd. Some of my fellow airmen got tattoos and recieved sevier infections, then some did'nt want them anymore and had to pay at great cost to remove them. It's a personal choice and you should read the regulations reguarding tattoos before getting one. And remember what looks great when you are young may not be so great later on in life. Ask some women.

I didn't see any of those who wrote the constitution state you couldn't serve because of a tattoo. Not only that think about how little the amount of people there are in our country who choose to defend the USA by serving our military. Not to mention many of these laws come from individuals who might have never served pressing those higher up to agree with the tattoo policies. Just glad when I was in they never had such rules.

Mine may be old and my girl tells me I need the ink touched up. But I tell her that when that ink was bright, I was just kid along way from home and my old chief took me in for a unit tattoo to help protect me cuz he knew it was Kansas anymore Toto! He was a great man, chief and hellavue Frog! As he was one of the frogs there that took me under his wing until I could float on my own in those waters! There is one thing for certain.... Whether frog or rat..... NSW takes care of it's own!

The only thing I'll say is that in 1978 after graduating Infantry AIT at Ft Benning a bunch of us went out drinking. After a few too many we decided to got to a parlor for tattoos, we were refused service because of out intoxicated condition-not sure if this is still the case but I'm very happy I don't and have never gotten a tattoo! Most also don't realize but receiving a tattoo can also increase your risk of certain types of hepatitis!

I served in 3/502 INF back in the 80s and have very fond memories of my service. I've always wanted to commemorate that time in my life with a tattoo. My unit's crest is awesome and I think it would make for some great ink.

I have an idea of a bald eagle (101st Airborne) clutching the 502nd unit crest. Question for you all: Out of fear of even remotely being accused of stolen valor since I never saw combat, would it be taboo to get it on my right arm? I know that area on the uniform is reserved for division patches where a soldier served in combat. Does anyone see a problem with that?

I have one service tat on my right shoulder, that's the only one I have but I am soon going to get another one of the Cuban flag that represents my dad who has passed away, I will put one banner on each side with my kids name in the banners.

I have 4 (one for each year of service). It is up to each individual on where to get it. You just have to realize that if you get it in the wrong place it may cost you a job later on. while waiting to go to bootcamp, I was talking with a veteran that was a parole officer and he mentioned that he was not expecting to get promoted because his supervisor informed him that he looked more like the parolees than an officer with the tattoos on his forearms. For this reason I was very particular where I had the tattoos placed.

I don't have any objections to people that choose to get service tattoos, that is up to them, I Myself however have no intention of getting one ever but then thats My choice for Myself. Usually the message or design of the tattoos is fine and as long as its respectable I don't have a problem with those that do choose to have them. That should be up to them to decide for themselves.

Someink I can accept, a Marine with a well done EGA or Jump wings for a Paratrooper on their Biceps. As long as it's well done and placed properly I don't have an issue.
Here is my problems Tats. I had 3 soldiers in Germany that went into town and got the same tattoo. Thier ink wasn't well done but worse all 3 ended up getting Hepititus. Granted that was in the early 1980s.

Never had tattoos when I severed in the Army, 1990-1998. Back then, they were actually discouraged as you should not have something identifiable on your body..

Got my anchors on my hands I'm a boatswains mate and when you meet most of us we take pride in our work and most will have these on their hands also. I didn't do this until I made second class. When I actually decide to make this a career instead of a one and done.

I have none. But to me, tats are like servive ribbons. Some are BS, you get one just for showing up and doing your job. What have you really done to earn it. Now, ribbons earned while serving in combat zones are totally different. I respect them and they have more influence and meaning. Just sayn, a tat just because you finished basic is laughable.

My brother has four or five tattoos that he got while in the Navy from 1957 ~ 1961. They've faded and some are hard to tell what they are. During my years in the U.S.A.F., 1965 ~ 1992, they had regulations against tattoos although I don't recall a single instance where anyone was disciplined for having one. Those who did concealed them pretty well.

Having seen the badly faded tattoos on my Uncles and other Vets who served in WW2, I was never tempted to get them. OTOH, I'm not at all critical of those who do. I'm neither for nor against tattoos. It's a personal choice and I've seen some amazing service related tattoos.

I have dolphins (submarine qualified) because I am forever a submariner. I knew a lot of guys that got some stupid tattoos. I'm sure they regret them now but if that's what someone wants to do then it's their body.

I have a simple USMC bulldog tattoo on my forearm. I’ve had it for almost 30 years now. Sure, it’s faded and smudged but I wouldn’t change it for the world. I’ve found over the years that service tattoos are a great icebreaker and conversation piece. Especially when they are seen by people who have never served. Sure, I’ve ran into some people who hate the military and showed me their disgust but for the most part, all of the comments I’ve gotten over the years have been positive. The younger crowd really likes them.
