Giving up my laptop would be a different matter.

I was forced to do this a few weeks ago while I was in South Beach. My phone decided it wanted to take a swim with me and left me without a working smartphone for the remaining part of my trip. While I really wasn't using it during the trip anyways because really who wants to look at Facebook and stuff when you are in South Beach but it did sort of feel weird and it really placed me behind the power curve when I came home.

I also try to unplug when I have my kids. Sure I'll post pics on Instagram and Facebook. But I rather just enjoy the time with them not just around them. I see both the good and the bad behind doing this and I think we are much better off by doing this from time to time, but at the same time, in a world that changes by the second, being connected is no longer a nice thing to have but is a requirement in some cases.

I try to minimize phone use during weekends. My job is social media/web though, so my ability to disconnect is necessarily limited.

I leave my phone on the charger when I leave the house on the weekends. Unless I'm camping, then I turn it off and pack it in the far corners of my pack to be used for emergencies only.

I have very few social apps on my smart phone. I have all my (personal) business apps on it. I work in the technology field as a software architect/developer, have a need to stay on top of communications for work, so have my outlook and slack installed for that as well. I definitely do not have an anticipation for incoming "stuff". I still prefer the computer for FB & RP. I use FB mainly for the Irish Wolfhound groups now. RP is always up at work and I will check it when I kick off software builds.

So, for my phone usage, I use it more for a hot spot tether (about 10 hours a month) than I do for texting, calling, or constantly scrolling. Oh, I do have Kindle on it as well with a library of several hundred books. I do read - a lot!

There's a FBI statement that reported not to charge your mobile devices at motel charging stations nor any station, FYI. They suggested to bring your own charger. There was malicious malware found in mobile phones after plugging into charging stations. They also reported your taking your own risks with your wifi and wifi calling and blue tooth on at such places where VPN ports lack in each situation exposing all your data.
