When I hit my mandatory retirement date in 2008, I contacted US Army Reserve personnel to coordinate out-processing as I had out-processed at every transition point since 1974. I was told that I was not authorized to out-process which shocked me. I was able to take my orders which transferred me to the retired reserve to Fort Myers so that my wife and I could turn in our cards - my CAC card and my wife's dependent ID card and exchange them for pink Retired Reserve cards. At some point I elected to be a gray area retiree which enables my salary to increase with the active duty salary so that when I begin to draw my retirement it will be based on the same pay scale as my active duty counterparts. My retirement pay will be 52% of an LTC over 38 since I have 7515 retirement points [based on just under 19 years of active federal service plus reserve service points].
Quote from April 30, 2015 Congressional Research Service report Military Retirement: Background and Recent Developments
"The actual calculation parallels the active duty system but requires adjustment to reflect the part-time nature of reserve duty. For example, consider a reserve component lieutenant colonel with 5,000 points who joined the military in January 1980, and transferred to the Retired Reserve in
2000 after completing 20 qualifying years of service. In 2015, he turned 60 years of age and became eligible for retired pay. The process for calculating his retired pay is to divide the total points by 360 to convert the points to years of equivalent service (5000 / 360 = 13.89). Next multiply the equivalent years of service by the 2.5% multiplier (13.89 times 0.025 = .3472). Using the Final Basic Pay option, the 2015 pay base for a lieutenant colonel with 35 years of service (20 years of qualifying service plus 15 years in the Retired Reserve) is $8,762.40 per month. Multiplying the pay base by the retired pay multiplier ($8,762.40 times 0.3472) produces a monthly retirement annuity of $ 3,042 per month."
FYI COL Mikel J. Admin Retire since I was over 18 years and not at 20, Fill out a packet for PEB (AGAIN) and write a letter basically begging to stay in, or do nothing and get administratively discharged with nothing. I opted for the retirement, being completely fed up with the system. I figured I would have to go to some sort of briefings, etc for retirement. The next day I received another counseling statement verifying my decision and a 4187 requiring my signature, along with a message to return my TA-50 immediately as my retirement date was Oct 30th, These emails began on Oct 20th. Yep 10 days from decision to done, not even a phone call from the commander or 1SG that I dealt with on a regular basis. No thanks, no good luck, no Final thank you at formation. This all happened during the gov shutdown 2 years ago. I just disappeared from the unit like dust in the wind. Oh the guard ETS'd me in DEERS also so I had to take my orders showing retirement to the local Navy base and they had to make some calls to get everything fixed in the system. I've received my official retirement orders on August 11, 2017 for reaching age 60 on October 23, 2017. I received a lot of things (pictures provided below). I was TPU from 82-04 and AGR from 04-15. Because I retired while I was on AGR status (technically refradded because I did not have 20 Full-time years), I am currently in the Retired Reserve. I did have an official retirement ceremony and received a certificate of retirement, Letter from the President, letters from senior leaders, a Letter from a past President, a coin from the SecArmy, and so on. Did I take it upon myself to make sure all of the requests were put in for these forms. Yes, I did. And I was fortunate to have the assistance of a very knowledgeable AG NCO. If you are retiring, you really need to take it upon yourself to request what you want and/or have earned.
