How many RP'ers have attended a private function where you were required to 'check' your cell phone?

Tonite, I was told of having to check your cell and being searched for other devices before entering a party? Do Americans have more freedoms than they can be entrusted with?

I have never been to one and would not go to one. Why would there be a problem with cell phones?

CSM Charles Hayden A Cell Phone is a Recording Device these days, It is capable of taking still Pictures and Video. If Company Confidential Material is being discussed it makes sense if anything Market Affecting it makes sense (I Do Some Security for Investment Banks). If that "Private" Function has the Capability of Embarrassing a Private Company, Organization or Club, as a Spook I Understand.

You don't have to have a private function or classified environment to see this. A lot of the "closed session" stuff for local governments, boards, etc. have these rules too wherein administrative disciplinary topics and other sensitive stuff if being addressed. Common at the courthouse too. So given that baseline, nothing can go wrong, right? The reason we'll see more of this is the increasing lack of an ethical moral compass overall. Everything is on a bell curve. There will always be this Alpha Hotel who will record, create inappropriate Tweets, whatever. Add to that cases of OMS (Open Mic Syndrome) and without some level of control, you're vastly better off not having any function. That, and if the "no phone" rule is violated, some recourse options are more readily available.

Was there an actual security reason for this request, or was it done by the host in an attempt to break the attendees from the cell phone habit for a few hours in the hope that maybe people will actually mingle and converse?
I hope it was the latter reason, but I suspect that the host and others like them are doing the "nuclear option" with personal devices because so many unwanted things are appearing on social media outlets.

Property rights are important and the property owner has rights to regulate how their property is used. Of course you have the right to attend or not as a result. I do not think that Americans have too many rights. I think the opposite actually. Individual rights are slowly being eroded and that needs to stop. However, people need to remember that for every right there is an obligation and duty not to infringe upon others.

CSM Charles Hayden oh it's that type of party. Nope I do not do any parties that restrict my ability to follow RP via the app.
