17+ years of active flying, so deployment does not mean the same thing it does to ground guys. For u,s a flying deployment is rarely longer than 120days, due to the pace of flight operations. We have to manage flying hours allowed per 90day period with the combat effectiveness and training pipelines for our units. From 1998 to 2012 I deployed an average of 2 times per year to a combat theater. When I was not deployed, I was still on the road for training and exercises for 3 out of the 6 months I was at home.

For example, I spent 1998-2003 at RAF Mildenhall, UK. During that time, I was physically on the island with my family for 754 days out of 1650. That is less than half of the time. The rest of the time I was on the road. Using "deployments" as an indicator of amount of time spent away from family is not a very good indicator of how much time you actually spend "away".

I've got 3 (2xOIF and one to. OEF). If y'all have read though, the combat BDE in Korea is deactivating and it will be entire combat BDE's from state side on a 9 month deployment replacing them. First one to go is coming out of FT Hood. Although not necessarily combat, it will be time away from are families which is just as hard sometimes

But more importantly than the number of deployments is perhaps how long they were. I know Ranger deployments are intense for 3-4 months, but how does that stack up to the 15 month deployment, or the two 12 month deployments with less than 18 months dwell in between? How many total months have you been deployed?

Number of deployments is a good metric but total months deployed is another that needs to be looked at. For example eight three month deployments is the same as two twelve month deployments in terms of total time deployed.

What are we counting as deployments here? Because if you ask the Marines on Hawaii they think Japan, Korea, Guam, etc are deployments. You might need to specifiy combat deployments (ie. Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam, etc)

I think a deployment is different for each branch. For myself, I have done two Western Pacific Deployments, as well as two Eastern Pacific Deployments. My WestPacs were 6 months for one and 6 months for the other, while the EastPacs where about 2 months. Each has its own stressors that make them hard. My last west pac, out of the first 135 days, I spent a total of 17 of those on land and able to be in contact with my family period. We were out to sea and unable to communicate with the families for so long that it did become a big time stress for a lot of the sailors on board, especially when they had to tell their loved that they couldn't say where we were going to be once we left port.

Frankly, I don't think I could do a combat deployment like the other branches do. I have a huge amount of respect for the troops on the ground that are doing the dirty work that I don't think I could handle. That is why I hide in a big black tube.

This is really an interesting Question. ODS for me but then I think of Troops in Germany during the cold war. Sitting on the East/West German border was a month long rotation done 4 times a year or even those stationed in Berlin inside the iron curtain and how just traveling there was a diplomatic adventure. Or what about troops on the DMZ. Maybe not considered deployments but truly on the line locked and loaded with ROE in full effect. USMC brothers and others have similar situations. Deployment is a term we probably need to look at a bit closer.

I've only deployed once. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. I kept an open mind about it. The hardest part was being away from my daughter, which in reality is no different than others who deploy. When I deployed I made sure I didn't complain because there were people I met on a daily basis who had deployed several times. Very humbling experience and made me appreciate my time with family more.

I often feel like I didnt contribute enough because of not deploying... Went TDY plenty of times. Got to spend 30 days with the Navy on the Essex and the Kitty Hawk, but never deployed to AFG or Iraq.

Three deployments totalling 40 months. It's already been said, I'm sure, but you can't scale deployments by number of times sent. If I had been lucky enough to get the three month deployments, but deployed the same amount of actual time, I would be on my fourteenth deployment right now.

I was in West Germany Bamberg Warner barracks 1st battalion 52nd infantry during the Cold War I want to thank all of you guys serve during your deployments in battle it's one thing shooting rounds down range but it's totally different when when there's somebody shooting back at you thank you guys for doing a great job

4 deployments with a total of 32 months overseas and one CONUS mobilization (not sure I should count that while it was a PCS, it was only 53 miles from where I was living.). All but the first deployments were as an Individual Augmentee going out and back through CRC at Fort Benning.

One day we were setting around the barracks bragging on how many jumps we had, and I was proud of 276. But my fellow airborne buddy said he had only one. One that counts. The one that he jumped into combat. Point taken? So to me, traing deployments do NOT count and I'm sure that the original question meant that.
