Your Supply Sergeant will write up a statement of charges for the item you have lost. You then bring the completed statement of charges to the CIF lead and they will take it off your record.

Statements of charges usually involve depreciation, so this should be a cheaper option than buying the missing item just to turn in, no matter how much it is.

Realistically: if you lose an item, or if it is rendered unserviceable, your supply sergeant can run a FLIPL, and the item can be removed from your record with no cost to you if it is determined that you are not at fault. Typically you do this after the training exercise where it was lost/broken, so when you are doing this when you are trying to clear, it’s pretty much guaranteed you’re going to pay for it. Though for older stuff it may be depreciated more. However, depending on the circumstances of the loss a Report of Survey could be done and you not need to pay. All depends on the how it was lost.
