Probably won't help your chances of being selected for SFC. Follow your career path schools and you will be more successful. I certainly applaud your enthusiasm and drive. If you can get both, then get both. If not, I'd recommend Recruiter and Drill Sergeant. Look at additional duties as well. Follow the Army Career Path for 12B. Have your degree. It will be your performance that is most recognized. You are young keep pushing, but never take your eye off of your Soldiers. Training and leading them will make all else fall into place. It's good to plan ahead and be proactive instead of reactive.

First, your unit can't send you to Airborne school. In order for you to go to Airborne school you have to go TDY enroute to an Airborne assignment. As far as the board is concerned, being in an Airborne assignment is usually rated higher than a non airborne one, and airborne Soldiers serving in Airborne assignments do have a higher selection rate for most MOS's.

The single most influential thing to the board is your position and your NCOERs from that position. A SSG serving in a SFC position like PSG, successfully, will rate higher than a high speed SSG serving in a SSG position with all the badges. So perform well, take the hard jobs, and get selected to take the senior positions in your organization that lead to promotion.

Everyone will tell you what you need to do well in the boards eyes, but that is all speculation. You can go right to the AAR notes where the board members tell you what criteria they used to grade you, what was considered competitive, what was not considered competitive, and what the top rated NCOs possessed.

Next go to the HRC Enlisted Promotion Page and watch the class about how the board scores each person. That way you'll understand about half of what the AAR is talking ABOUT. More importantly you'll see where schools like schools like AAS sit on value to the board. FYI, it's an Additional Skill Identifier not a Special Qualification Identifier, so unless you're actively using the skill it doesn't mean much to the board. Basically, if two Soldiers are exactly the same and one has AAS and the other doesn't, the first one will break the tie.

Finally, if you have the time, spend it on your education. At some point education becomes a deciding factor for every MOS on the boards. In my MOS it's almost impossible to make SFC without at least an associate and MSG without a Bachelors. For others it might be you can't make MSG without an associate. Point is you don't want to be staring down the board trying to get promoted but you still have another year or more of school before you're competitive. Start now, take one class at a time, and in a few years you'll have an associate with an almost perfect GPA. That said, go to these schools because you WANT to! Both become much more difficult if you're only "badge collecting". Let my state the obvious(and dirty truth), officers, fellow(senior, peer and subordinate)NCO s and enlisted are impressed by the volume of your "hardware". That said, those articles "draw fire" from "snipers", especially on boards. Be sure you are well versed in all the "shiny things" you gather. Nothing harder on a high speed junior NCO than sitting opposite a MSG(or higher)with only his Service and Good Conduct ribbons on his promotion board. It's perfect, and that's the step just beyond your next step.

Figure out exactly what you need to check the box to submit a SFC packet that would be taken seriously. I think your question (per the NCO's comments) see while you are trying to be proactive are misdirected. So you need to really research out the process and requirements. These are spelled out in the regulations, MILPER's and your MOS competitiveness.

If you ONLY look at the next promotion without a line of sight over the horizon you might end up pigeonholing yourself and not be able to maneuver down the road. You might see you can chase rank, or you can chase a job, but the hardest thing is to chase both.

In your discovery of the SFC process you will obviously discover the SSG process. When you make SSG then move your peg, and figure out the MSG process. Get the idea?

The higher you aim, the closer to the top you will be when you miss.

I was verbally counseled years ago as a SGT by my section NCOIC. Apparently I stepped outside my lane, and commented to the effect I was trying to plan a few chess moves ahead of the curve. He scolded me, and said the Army is a game of Checkers, not Chess. Do only what you are told to achieve the immediate task.

He's a SFC now.

Checkmate. Attending a tough school JUST because it might look good on your record five or more years from now isn't a good reason to attend the school, but if you are really interested in the skills and you are 100% sure you can complete the school, then perhaps you might as well.

There are no golden tickets to promotion. The promotion "board" is really going to be the one board member who happens to review your file. I've spoken with several former board members and I've never heard of anything that any of them looked for as a sure "Promote" criteria, but some have admitted to having one or more criteria to eliminate people from being promoted. Realize that each board member has a pile of records to go through and whittle down to a manageable number

Each branch develops its own guidance about what a career path ought to look like -- boards are supposed to review that guidance and consider it in making their decisions. Sometimes the outcomes of such promotion boards do not seem to match what the branch said were good developmental assignments, but in general the preferred path is moving up through the normal chain of progressively more responsible LINE assignments combined with ONE nominative assignment outside the direct path. Multiple assignments outside the main line, especially back-to-back assignments outside the main line tend to have a negative impact.

The one thing you need to be looking for in preparation for an SFC board is looking for a successful assignment as a platoon sergeant while you are a SSG. When you get that opportunity, be sure that the unit has you slotted in the platoon sergeant slot and that your evaluation report shows you as the platoon sergeant. Too often units will have an E6 being the platoon sergeant but the name carried in that slot is some E7 who is detailed elsewhere. Airborne only if you push to get to Bragg because a lot of those that sit on the board view FORSCOM time favorably. Other than that, push to constantly max your PT scores and get a degree. They don't really care about Recruiter anymore, but Drill will still be favorably viewed.

Timeline-
While waiting to go Airborne, start your degree plan now if you don't already have it.
Get to 82nd after going Airborne
After getting E6 then volunteer for drill duty.
If you can't get drill, or have time to anyway, volunteer for additional duties that will get public facetime(like color guard), as these are heavily favored by local commands.
