How often does counter intel deploy?

So I’m in sigint and my husband is an mp and he wants to go counter intel and I obviously don’t know too much about counter intel but I was told by my sgt that If he goes counter intel that I will never see him. I just want to know how often and how long counter intel agents get deployed.

Like everything in Intel it depends on a multitude of variables. Unit being one of them, willingness to go, need for CI. If it’s not directly from an Agent take it all with a grain of salt. Even then each individual experience can differ. All my experiences were in SOF so I can’t speak to regular army CI deployments.

Actual CI deployments are few and far between. Investigations happen out of the field offices mostly. The other CI missions happen out of very specific units (surveillance, Ops, special investigations). I don’t know who told you CI is always gone but that is simply not the case.

Counter Intel, is an MOS. MOS's don't deploy, units do. MI does do a lot of augmentation, more than other MOS's, but in the end it all depends on what unit a person is in. If this information is coming from a SGT or SSG I would argue that they don't have the experience to make that assertion. Your husband could easily be conducting investigations in a field office or TARP briefings in a BCT.

OK... so caveat that I am *not* a CI guy, never was, never will be. But, I *was* a HUMINTer, which is the closest thing to being CI without actually being CI (no, I am not trying to say I was "almost CI" like some folks try to claim they were "almost infantry"). We worked with them quite a bit, and usually shared space, leadership, and some responsibilities. Often in the Same PLT. Etc.

CI folks in a BCT are part of that BCT. Most of the time, the Army deploys by BCTs, so when the Brigade goes, the CI goes with them. Now, that being said, BCT support is only a small portion of what CI does. CI folks working out of a CI Office / Detachment / Unit are much LESS liekly to deploy for a rotation. But they are much MORE likely to go out TDY for an investigation or operation. Those can be anywhere from a day to a month - or longer. And even those depend on the unit.

Long story short, it depends VERY MUCH on where the individual CI guy or gal is assigned. And even then, it will still depend on that individual's experience, skill level, unique skills, training, and personality. Simply put, sometimes a great person is just the wrong person for a specific job.

An additional question is can ci be stationed in Colorado or North Carolina?

That all depends on what type of unit he goes into. Just like any MOS.

As an entry level 35L, they're most likely to end up in a BCT S2X or an E-MIB. Given the decrease in deployments, they're unlikely to deploy more than you unless you're in an INSCOM assignment where you work with the mothership.

Also as a 35L it'll open opportunities that an MP won't have, but will probably be a better route than say CID and they could apply their skillset.

Bottom line: If they want to go CI, they're not necessarily going to deploy more than as an MP or more than you. It'll be based on assignments and will increase opportunities for the both of you.

Strange comment to make from your SGT. 10 of my CI friends all at different DS’s have all been home with their families after the duty day. Like SFC mentioned, it’s the unit not the MOS that deploys.
