I know the area fairly well and if you need a pause in the country, this should fill the bill. Metro and mountains are within a reasonable drive. You're SOL on the beach unless you hop to gulf or e. coast once a year. Gulf Shores AL or FL panhandle are a one day hop. The usual camp followers outside the gate. Hope you have a great tour. I would avoid Hopkinsville, KY unless your primary concern is stretching your dollar (schools are subpar, unless you want to spend on private, town has very little night life, and there are very few "good" neighborhoods) - I am speaking as a guy who DOES live there.
In Clarksville, there are a TON of apartment/townouse complexes that cater to military. Housing office has a list of one's who work with them to help out Soldiers with reducing move-in cost. NOT ALL ARE CREATED EQUAL. A little bit of online research (I.e. check reviews) goes a LONG way. Clarksville and Campbell were great for my family. I lived off Tiny Town in a housing development. Best neighbors I have had in 26 years lived next door, with more surrounding us. Didn't realize when I rented that I would live in a SOAR enclave and I'd fave little bird coverage watching the culdesac. The schools were good, teachers cared. I have never seen a town more tuned into the the installation and in particular the Division. If I were still AD, I would go back. Probably my favorite combo duty station and area to live. Was a relatively short drive to our home in SE Missouri, close to Nashville, lots to do in surrounding area, good units on post, etc. At that time military discount not have to pay sales tax on new vehicles in Tennessee. Nashville is less than an hour away and there are lots of places to visit and things to do there. You've also got the Kentucky Bourbon Trail to the north and some other big cities are just a few hours drive from here.
Many military families that live in Clarksville live in the neighborhoods that offshoot from Tiny Town Rd. A few live in Hopkinsville, KY which is also nice. I also know of some NCOs that bought a couple of acres of land outside of the city limits. Clarksville has a fair amount of traffic... not like gridlock traffic but enough to where you'll have to leave 10 minutes earlier IOT get to post 10 minutes early. As far as the schools go they're all pretty good. Sango is on the south side of Clarksville and is a really nice area... the downsides are the longer commute to work and the higher price of housing. If your child(ren) has special needs, call the EFMP office at Ft. Campbell or connect with them via Facebook and they can give you some great advice. I will say the DOEA schools on Ft. Campbell are rated better than Clarksville-Montgomery County Schools but you have to live on post to attend. You might not get as much square footage on-post as opposed to renting or purchasing off-post.
All in all, this is a great area to live in the people here are great and as LTC Mackay said the city is really dialed into the post; it's a true partnership. On post is organized and convienent to find just about anything. My advice for housing is to stay away from Providence and Riverside. Lots of crime that way. Cheap housing but it’s very bad around there at night and on the weekends. Tiny Town Road and the off shoots of it housing developments are very nice and fairly reasonable. Back in 82-84, I liked it, even though they didn't have all the luxuries of today. The two best places to go was Nashville and land between the lakes, as far as schooling goes for your children ask when you arrive. As far as housing goes, I found that the further you was away from any installation the better the rental or property sales was better, that would in the schools your children would attend, do want cheap or convenience SFC Kenneth Hunnell Sat, 02 Jan 2021 11:36:14 -0500 2021-01-02T11:36:14-05:00 2020-05-17T22:34:34-04:00
