But I know in my state, on time NCOERs are close to a top priority. Not all units or states will place the same importance on them unfortunately but they are the building block of your career as a leader. A negative NCOER will definitely hold you back no matter what your branch or status. If your chain of command isn’t taking them seriously they should. They hold the same weight. They use the same standards for evaluation. They have to, by law. I may only be a SPC and I may be out but I will gladly travel to your unit and SMOKE, and SCUFF UP some ass!!! With no respect in the ranks you have no unit. The NCOs need to fix that quick like yesterday buddy Response by SPC Josh McCoy made Apr 1 at 2018 12:11 PM 2018-04-01T12:11:20-04:00 2018-04-01T12:11:20-04:00 2LT Private RallyPoint Member 3502654

Having sat on promotion boards from E-6 to E-8, I can authoritvly say it is the central document to assessing promotion lists/ranking.
Having sat on AGR boards, I can authrativly say that it is the central document for assessing performance and potential.
Having just completed a branch transfer and commissioning board, I can anecdotally say that it is the most important document in a personnel file.

The short answer is very seriously, it is critical to any Soldier’s career.
Ask questions often if you need help preparing a good support form, for yourself or your Soldiers, or evaluations for individuals you rate. In the guard there is only so many spots to transfer within your state, unlike active duty where you can PCS for a position anywhere. Having a good ncoer along with applying for the proper schooling to be advanced to the next rank is critical. You don't have to be hot shit on paper, but your rater and senior rater should have confidence in your potential lead and take responsibility for your troops. Both branches are part-time components, they don't take things seriously like the active component."

That just speaks to your ignorance. You seem to have a very limited understanding of the role that the Reserves and National Guard serve. For instance, troops from the National Guard have been a part of EVERY conflict the US has been involved in..going back to the earliest Guards unit form in 1836. Perhaps you are aware of the fairly recent reorganization of the Reserve Component from a Strategic Reserve Force to an Operational Reserve Force? Not only do the RC have to maintain a readiness posture, they do this while maintaining full time jobs. The Operational Reserve Force combined with National Guard Forces have played, and will continue to play a major role in our national defense. Believe me, when I say we take things just as seriously, if not more so, then the active component.
