I am still new to the army, as a PFC and limited experience in the army, how should I go about building my flight packet? Should I wait for a deployment or until I make SGT or just start building it now? I am currently in an aviation unit fueling birds so I have a little bit of experience “around” helicopters and the flight line. I know this question is out there all the time but I am just not sure where to start. If you have any information or advice for me I would really appreciate your time.

Another point of advice, don’t ever let anyone tell you that you’re not qualified because of something. Let the board tell you that. Literally follow the example packet to a “T” and you should be ok. If the board tell you no the first time, try again. If it’s really what you want to do, you should try everything in your power to achieve that dream.

Thank you, I appreciate it. I have just started studying for the SIFT and am going to have to wait until all of this COVID 19 stuff has settled to talk to some Senior Flight Chiefs. I will hopefully be ready for the board next year.

PFC (Join to see) now is the perfect time to get some studying in. There’s an excellent YouTube channel for basic aerodynamics of helicopters, it’s called “Helicopter Lessons in 10 minutes or less”. I lived by that channel during flight school. Also try to grab a copy of basic helicopter aerodynamics book. There’s an FAA version for free online.

Head on over to the USAREC website and download the sample packet. There is no minimum rank requirement to drop a packet as long as you meet the GT and SIFT requirements.

You are still relatively new to the Army so your lack of experience may end up hurting you as leadership experience and potential is a highly sought after quality trait

Thank you for that, I’ll check it out. I know that I don’t have much leadership experience as far as the army goes, but I am 28 years old and have had leader positions as a civilian. I also did very well in IET and had 4 COAs when I graduated from AIT. I’m not sure if that will matter or not.

Nobody knows what the board views as “favorable”. Hell, I have 97 college semester hours in a commercial aviation program and a PPL and was a fully qualified non-select at the last board.PFC (Join to see)

If I was in your position I’d be looking to drop my packet as soon as I was eligible and as many times as required.
