Some are simple 'go/no-go,' while some are text and graded on knowledge retained. Plan on it being something just like in school, where you do not have anything but your memory to guide you. Plan for it being hard, so that when/IF the standard changes you can roll back. SSG Brian G. Everything else is mental. Everyone wants to give up at some point, especially at the beginning of basic. You get there and you're like, "oh, heck, what did I get myself into?" Bit you can do it. You just have to decide to do it. You shouldn't need to prepare for it, except for physical fitness. Remember that it will all be over before you know it, but remember what you learn. The Drill Sergeants really do want you to succeed, but it's their job to break you down so they can mold you into a Soldier. Yes, it was hard, but well worth it because it made Basic a lot easier than the other Soldiers who would set their mind to I can't do it because...
In AIT the hardest part was staying awake. I don't remember the tests being hard to pass. I was eating like shit looking back, eating a lot of Carbs to keep energy up and not realizing the Carbs were actually making me sleepy in classes. Eat lots of fruit, veggies, and protein it will keep you sharp in and out of class. There will be lots of exercise and games played due to other recruits not meeting the standards set by your drill sergeants.

As it has been said, its purely mental. If you can handle stressful situations it should be nothing. Keep it in the back of your mind that it is not personal, you have to get out of the "me" mindset and into the "we". You will be fine. Just remember millions have come before you, it is not an impossible task. Be in reasonable good shape. Other than that, as long as you don't get into trouble or seriously injure yourself, you will graduate. Only ways to fail is if you do not pass your pt test out of the 8+ they give you, you get into trouble, or you don't qualify with your weapons.
