How to go from reserves to IRR? And how long do you have to serve in reserves before transfer to IRR?

I am 19 have been in the army reserves for 2 years and am currently 12 weeks pregnant I want to be discharged but my commander wants to put me in IRR instead and we both don’t know how long I have had to serve before I am able to be put in IRR. I would much rather be other then honorably discharged but commander says IRR so I guess IRR it is. How long would I have to be in the reserves before going IRR?

I think that females are not automatically discharged for being with child any longer.

When I was in the Navy they changed the rules for females being pregnant and being discharged. As MAJ Ronnie Reams stated, I don’t think females are being discharged anymore. I know it changed for the Mavy back in 2010. They’ll allow you to be home for a few months then return to your unit.

PV2 Trinity Brito your original contract was for 8 years total service time. Be sure you get all your facts, counseling etc. If your getting transferred to the IRR you’ll receive orders. I say this next part from prior experience from once having been a company commander...be sure you understand fully all your options. If you’re not clear reaching out to your unit Chaplain with concerns is a viable option as well. There’s a strong possibility that going IRR that you can incur a debt for SGLI payments. Be sure to get all the facts and respectfully ask the right questions. Your chain of concern as well as your chain of command should be assisting you get the right answers. Best of luck.

PV2 Private RallyPoint Member There is no minimum amount of time you have to serve in the AR in order to be transferred to the IRR. However, it is the option of the Commander on where to send you. Furthermore, you will be required to fill out and submit a Family Care Plan, if you are a single female Soldier, 60 days prior to the birth of the child. A family care plan is not required for Soldiers who are married to another civilian (but highly recommended). If you decide to not fill out and submit that document, the unit will have to counsel you and take actions as necessary.

Talk to your career counselor. You may loose many benefits, like the GI Bill if you transfer to the IRR.

Not trying to get discharged cause I’m pregnant or for my pregnancy I just want out of the military my morals and values have changed and now differed from those of the military as well as many other reasons but I just want to know either how to get out of the military or how to get switched to the IRR

Your contract is for 8 years. 6 years Active Reserve and 2 years Inactive Reserve. You can go into the IRR now, but in two years you will need to come back to finish out the remaining time for Active Reserve. I speak from experience as o e of my former Soldiers, who is LDS, went to IRR to do his Mission and had to come back to AR when his Mission was done.

It can take 3 weeks to 6 months depending on your CoC. If you don’t submit all the required paper work it will certainly delay the process. MG Daniels just updated the policy to go into the IRR. You need to see your ARCC (career counselor) for an IRR counseling. Depending on your AR contract you may only be able to transfer to IRR for 2 years or less depending on the benefits you are willing to permanently lose. Best wishes and congratulations on baby.
