I spent a month at Pobwani and 11 months on Kimpo peninsula. I was in Hawk missile batteries with the 38th brigade as a CW radar repairman. Was assistant section chief as a PFC but still pulled guard duty 6 nights a week and worked 6 days a week. DMZ was not secured at this time and when they sent the Korean Marines to VietNam in June 1965 we had our hands full for five weeks until the 2nd Infantry moved in. My first full day in Korea I was taken to a TAC site for guard duty and the guy who relieved me was attacked with a 2x4 and his leg was so injured that he lost it. The other guard totally freaked so they sent me back out and I did not get relieved until 10 AM next day. Didn’t quite fancy the shitters they had, you had to squat to make a deposit. And trust me, after a few drinks you don't want any of that. I lost too many good pairs of shoes in those damn shitters, Papasan use to hang out by the shitters and whenever a GI lost his shoe, he'd throw the other one up against the shitter and walk away. Now Papasan being the shrewd entrepreneur that he was, would collect that shoe and stick it in his bag, he’d then walk over to the shitter, kneel down and reaching deep down in the steaming pungent lumpy goobly stew, retrieve the other shoe slinging shit and paper everwhere. He then would wash it off and shine the pair up and replace them in his bag. He stayed at that shitter for hours. I often wondered how many pair he got per day and what did with them. Either he gave them to family members, or simply sold the shoes at their flea market.
