Inform the troops of the opportunities, point them towards the ed center, and off they should go. Part of the problem, in my opinion, has nothing to do with not knowing the opportunities exist ... and everything to do with apathy. I saw it when I was in. Some valued higher education and sought out the opportunities; others did not. I suspect it's still the same story.

I also recognize that some assignments are more education friendly than others. When I was in the 82nd, it was tough to get out of field exercises to go to school. In fact, it was frowned upon - believe it or not - by many. Later, though, when I was at strategic counterintelligence assignments, college was highly encouraged by everyone, even peers. There was a definite cultural difference between the two branches as regards higher ed. I saw it first hand.

Still, putting the word out - again and again - is a great idea. Then it's up to the individual to decide for him- or herself. CW5 Private RallyPoint Member Mon, 23 Mar 2015 20:19:08 -0400 2015-03-23T20:19:08-04:00 Response by CSM Michael J. Once the Service Member invests in themselves, they typically do not experience much misconduct. Additionally, the experience (and knowledge) learned will help them become more of a critical thinker which improves the performance of the unit. CSM Michael J. While I was on active duty I took full advantage of the Education Centers and all of the education I could get my hands on. During the last 3 years of my Service I was able to complete 3 degrees within 22 Months. My son is currently on active duty and was Stationed in Korea and Japan for 3 years. When he was home I asked him how much college he had racked up and he said NONE... I thought it was because he was lazy until he said, it wasn't a big thing there and that nobody were really promoting it. Even the Education centers didn't promote going to school. Not saying that they did or didn't because each soldier has a different take on things as they occur in life. BUT, We need to reiterate to the current Soldiers the importance of Education and their lives once they leave service. had it not been for my Education I would not be as prepared or capable to enter the Civilian Job market. I am still in my first job after leaving service and it has become my second career. All of this due to my education while in service. SFC Charles S.
