How were you able to apply your military leadership skills in your civilian career?

Regardless of your rank, you learned about leadership skills and traits. You may have had the privilege of using those skills in a leadership position in the military, or you used them indirectly to have a positive effect on your peers. After you left the military, did you find a way to use those same leadership skills for the betterment of your company, your team, or perhaps someone you wished to aid to success. Please share with us such a situation and how you were able to make a difference in a positive way because of your leadership.

SFC Thomas Nichols great share, I used the 7 core Army Values and I picked up the word Dignity/Respect while I was in. It sure has done me some good in the Civilian World.

What I brought with me from the Marine Corps experience that served me well in my civilian occupation was: being goal oriented, leading by example, leading from the front, showing respect up and down the chain of command, keeping everyone informed through constant communication, and that "can do" approach to all assignments. That skill set gave me an advantage over others that I competed with for promotions, and I advanced rather quickly. No better place than the military to learn those things.

Now that I am in the civilian world I have discovered break time is sacred. We had a guy pass out the other night and one of the older guys came to me and asked where my relief was so I could go to break. I knew my relief was a hard worker so if he wasn't there he had a reason. I told them he was probably busy. When we discovered what happened to him there was an uproar because who was going to cover my break time. It made me laugh. I told them, "Guys it's just break. I can miss one. If I decide I need one I will wait until the rest of the crew on break is back and go take a short one." Adapt and overcome.

My military career helped me in many ways. I gained confidence in leading others, as well as keeping a level head in stressful situations. The confidence I gained helped show my ability to lead my peers in the civilian side. The Army also taught me how to work and equipped me with the ability solve problems without having to reach for a helping hand.

Leadership is leadership, and I am grateful for what I learned and gained during my time in the military. Towards my superiors I strive to be a subordinate I would want under me, and with my own subordinates I apply the skills I learned - tactical/technical proficiency; professionalism in general; looking out for their welfare, etc.
