I feel like people size each other up depending on level of education in the civilian world. I definitely have a lot of respect for people who complete their Masters degrees after seeing many of my closest friends pursue theirs, and even more respect for those who went through the PhD program after hearing about my mother's journey achieving hers. I wouldn't know obviously, but guessing that might be similar to how people see rank and size each other up in the military?
