How would I wear these ribbons?

I have four ARCOM's and an ARCOM with V device for a total of 5. Everyone I've gone to seems to give me a different answer. Rack builder had it as two ribbons, one with V device and 3 bronze oak leafs and an empty ribbon. Any help would be appreciated.

You would wear just one ARCOM with the V device on the left of the ribbon, as you're facing it, then the 3 Bronze Oak Leafs to the right of the V device. Per AR 670-1, Chap 29-12.

Per AR 670-1:  When a "V" device is worn with oak leaf clusters, the "V" device is worn on the wearer's right.  <div>I say all on one ribbon, the "V" device, and then 4 oak leaf clusters.  I say this because the "V" device does not denote a subsequent award, just that one of your awards of the ARCOM were for valor.  </div><div>I base this off reading the definition of an oak leaf cluster and the definition of the "V" device.  </div>

The good 1SG here is pretty accurate. One of the worries people have is when an individual has multiple of each and they want to denote the quantity of each. Also people just like having larger racks. From my experience, all on one ribbon.

<P>The ARCOM with V device is the first ribbon with device, now heres where is gets tricky.  The first of 4 ARCOMs is the first oak leaf cluster and so on until you have 4 devices on one ribbon (V device & 3 OLCs).  You have one ARCOM left to be denoted and that will shift to another ribbon until which point you receive another ARCOM and you will then have one ribbon with V device and 1 silver OLC.  So as it sits in your pic is correct (at least in the AF).</P>

I got 99 problems but a ARCOM with a V device is not one. I have never seen this happen but the 4 device limit is correct. The second ribbon would stand as a another award to the first. It looks odd and you are going to get a millions questions when you wear it but it is correct.

I think the screen is correct until you earn your next ARCOM. Then you would take away the extra ribbon and the 3 bronze OLC's. You would then have 1 ribbon with V and a silver OLC.

This is how I have been wearing my rack. This is my interpretation of 670-1. I wear the V and the oak leaf together on the same ribbon. I have passed the scrutiny of many an NCO and SGM.

Whatever the award only one ribbon is authorized to be worn and any devices will be attached ONLY to the ONE ribbon. NEVER is a duplicate to a basic ribbon to be worn. There are no exceptions ! There would only be a maximum of FOUR (4) devices on any ribbon be they service stars, Oak Leave clusters or V for Valor device. In the case for example of a 5th Oak leaf cluster, four gold devices would be replaced by a single silver Oak leaf and once again no more than Four may be worn.

Try wearing a foreign ribbon, during my rotation to the phillipiness we got awarded 4 AFP ribbons with the highest one neon the AFP Bronze Cross Medal. As per the Reg, you can wear one foreign ribbon, but rack builder doesn't carry it and when I used to wear it, even though I have orders for it, it used to cause a lot of debate amongst the group. I just decided not to wear it anymore. At this point I don't want anything else on my uniform.

IAW Army Regulation 670–1, the photo is correct. Please read the following paragraph from the regulation itself. If you are awarded one more, then you could wear the ribbon with the "V" and "1" silver oak leaf cluster (if I'm reading the reg correctly).

Wear and Appearance of Army Uniforms and Insignia20–11. Appurtenances

a. Oakleafclusters. Bronzeoakleafclustersareworntodenoteawardofsecondandsucceedingawardsofdecorations (other than the Air Medal), the Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, and unit awards. A silver oak leaf cluster is worn in lieu of five bronze oak leaf clusters. A maximum of four oak leaf clusters may be worn on a single ribbon; a maximum of three oak leaf clusters may be worn with the “V” device on a single ribbon, for a total of four devices on the ribbon. I would say you should use a Rub-a-Dub and write on it, really smally, I got five of these bad boys and one of them has a "V". If the Rub-a-Dub writes too big, go to a fine point Sharpie. And if the first shirt don't like it, say. "Hey Top, when you get 5 of them, one of them with a "V", come back and see me. Till then, go pick on Karl". (or is it Carl?)

My first job in the Navy years ago was Medals and Awards Yeoman. The ribbon itself counts as an award. You do not wear two ribbons for the same medal. The ribbon on top should be placed where the ARCOM ribbon without oak leafs or combat V.

I would think the way you have displayed your very impressive rack is correct. I know from past experience that the military does not allow (I think this is how I remember it.) or encourage wearing duplicates of the same basic award, hence devices are used to signify multiple awards or higher value awards. Therefore, with 3 OLC and one V device, an observer of this ribbon rack would recognize that 4 awards were earned one of which was valorous.

Your ribbon array is correct with one exception. Lose the arcom ribbon that does not contain the oak leaf clusters. Many soldiers forget that the ribbon itself counts as one award. So, ribbon is one award, three clusters added equals four awards, then the V device is your fifth award. Just make sure iperms show proof of you receiving five separate awards. DD214 is not sufficient evidence.

It looks a little odd to me. What we went with in Aviation was to place numerals on the ribbon when we ran out of room with the leaves. Don’t know what the numeral rules are with other ribbons, but my air medal looks just fine with the numeral 30. It doesn’t take math to read my number. This way the V also fits.

Read 670-1, it had been updated to reflect the MAXIMUM accurtments at 4.... So the V and three bronze stars is max. If you have 6, i.e. an arcom w/V and 5 regular arcoms, ypu should wear two ribbons....

simplify it, when you amass that many really does it matter to keep track? You already know what you did. One ribbon is enough, you got a V on it and really if you don't have any more room for a cluster then you already showed your mettle. In the Marines we have a rule that we can wear one ribbon and call it a day, or the whole rack. I know people who did both. I would wear the whole rack though because I only had 9. some folks had like 9 rows. big mess so if they put one of the gimmie awards on and called it a day they were still good to go. Really hard to explain it though when you only have one ribbon and show 16 years of service stripes though, but like I said some folks do it.

Only 1 ribbon. V device worn to the left of oak leaf clusters. The number of certificates you have is the number of oak leaves minus one. If you have 5 awards then it is 4 oak leaves. 6 = 5. 7 turns into the silver oak leaves.

I have almost the same thing... the picture is correct. First award is the “blank” award, then one, two and three oak leaf cluster to denote 4 awards. This follows a “V” device, denoting the fifth award. The picture is correct. I had the same issue with mine (2 ARCOM’s and 1 ARCOM V). I used that logic to arrange my medals For my DA photo and it for me promoted to E8 in the secondary zone, so I’d say your good. And, either way, it’s still the correct way to wear them.

I'm not an expert, but my understanding of valorous awards is that they're distinct from the similarly named awards for achievement or service. Therefore the ARCOM with Valor gets its own ribbon. If you have multiple ARCOM with Valor awards, then your ribbon with the V device would also have oak leaf clusters.

You can only have 4 devices and/or oak leaves on a ribbon. It you need more room then you add an extra ribbon. Rack builder has it laid out correctly, When you get your 6th, you removed the bronze oak leaves and lose the 2nd ribbon and change to a silver oak leaf.

Good morning: Col. (Ret.) Chapman here. You only need 1 AECOM Ribbon with 3OLC = 4 and a V on the same Ribbon. If you get another ARCOM you would use 4 OLC + the V. If you get more, the you go to a SILVER PLC + the V.

I don’t know when you wear a second ribbon for the same award, but I noticed the SMA wears 2 AAMs. This may be he ran out of space for silver oak leafs, being that he has 10 AAMs awarded to him. This raises the question; why are there not a Gold Oak Leaf? We have bronze and silver.

Only one ribbon is worn for the award no matter how many times it is awarded. Subsequent awards are either OLC(bronze or after 4 silver) or with the V device for valor. Seems to me that the one given for valor should have been upgraded to a BSM with V device. CCMSGT (retired)

If it is 4 awards total it would be 4 bronze plus V device. If 5th award total, I silver plus V device.

Arcom with the V device is a separate award that should be 1. The others should be worn separately like normal. The was that one is set up means you have 4 Arcoms with a V device.

Anybody who served in combat probably had no time to address the protocol on how to wear what. As a former member of the 101st Airborne stateside, I also served with the 173rd Airborne first tour in Nam and the 82nd Airborne second tour. When I put on the patches of all the units I served with on my motorcycle vest I actually had an idiot question the possibility of my having served with all three units because he claimed my combat patches were on the wrong side. I told him I was never rear echelon so I never had a chance to look pretty and that he was welcome to tell me where the patches should be worn but warned him against insinuating that I might be lying. He had no further comment.

I served 22 years in the USAF and my longevity ribbon had 4 bronze oak leaf clusters. The ribbon for four years and each cluster for four years.

Back to the basics. In order of precedence. If you have four and one with a combat V, then those obviously higher in precedence and would be on top, or first. I don't know if this is right. I'm just applying logic.

Should NOT be two separate ribbons. Order of award is any subsequent to initial is formed on the initial.
Your Ribbon should reflect intial award qualification...Valor and the subsequent 3 ok leaf clusters demonstrating another 3 qualifications of award.

It’s all on 1 ribbon. If you have 5 then the V is centered on the ribbon and 2 of the OLCs are on each side. The big thing is that the ribbon w/OLCs are balanced.

Had this problem when I had 10 ARCOMs, you are limited by the # of appurtenances and that maximum is 4 warranting the extra ribbon that was on my DA Photo.

I would think there is but one ribbon for arcom with the letter v say a lot no need for a second ribbon. Look good in your uniform not Cluttered

AR 672-5 62-5-1 will tell you you obviously need to do some AR reading and memorization son or your going to go down DA Pam 310 will tell you what A.R. you need for anything. Learn them before it's too late that will cover your six everytime.

I would think that rack builders solution is correct wear your ARCOM with V as the senior award with a 2nd ribbon with the bronze oak leafs.

One ribbon only. definitely. I'd say the way it's display on the one ribbon is correct. Year back I wore the cluster first and the the V. My felling is I didn't want to claim I had two with 'V'. BSV I wore V first and then the cluster as both were for valor.
But I think officially the V is first then the cluster(s) whether they represent additional valorous awards or not?

You would wear just one but with the highest rank for that award to the right along with however many oak leaf clusters. But if memories serves me correctly, I believe when you have 5 then you would wear one silver oak leaf. I might be wrong on that one. But for sure its the V Device then the 3oak leafs. But refer to AR 670-1 just for clarity hence there is always changes to ARs. Good luck.
