At the location for the SFAS Camp Mackall, they have a sign posted ‘This is a Hooah free zone”. No one in Special Forces would ever use the term.

This is the historical version I heard as a young paratrooper. Troops waiting on D-day to occur came up with it because they were told far too frequently they were going into France. HUAW! became their way of saying BS to keep from getting in trouble, and the leadership thought they had come up with the word as a motivational expression.

It's been my understanding that "Hooah" was derived from "Who, Us?" back in WWI or II

I actually hate that word and any spelling or pronunciation variant with a passion. I might as well grunt and beat on my chest instead. So I tried very hard when I was in to avoid it's use. I only used it when told to or I was saying something along the lines "You are a moron but in my desire to avoid punishment will do what you say".

I hated it as well. It was used in some medical field units I was assigned to and the first time I heard it, I just shook my head. It makes intelligent people sound incredibly stupid!
