I am a tanker who’s unit doesn't currently have tanks.So my unit is encouraging me to attend a school. What schools should I consider?

You can't go to Airborne School, you're not in an Airborne unit and your MOS generally isn't Airborne anymore.

Dont go to Ranger School, you'll get dropped because you have no clue what you're doing and your unit probably doesn't have a decent Pre-Ranger program for people like you.

Don't go to Sapper school, again, you have no idea what you're doing and your unit lacks an adequate trainup.

Air Assault school is a good base level, introductory school that has several locations, isn't hard to get, and they will teach you everything you need to know upon arrival.

Bus driver, fork lift operator, UPL, Field sanitation are all valuable skills that will be worth promotion points when you're trying to become a SGT/SSG and will make you an asset to the unit.

Most importantly, if you have time, start your college education

I've been stationed at Bliss in 1st AD, land of tankers. I've seen one 19K with jump wings. We're good friends but I think he managed his slot in his contract. Unless you plan on a reclass, you won't be much use to the airborne community as a 19K, from an objective standpoint. SFC Private RallyPoint Member made excellent points so I won't reinvent the wheel. I will say though, in addition to the schools he mentioned, if you can swing a HAZMAT course take it.

The issue here is that you should pick a school that would help advance your career. If you cannot find a school that helps advance your career find a school that will offer you points. As stated Air Assault is a pretty good course for young soldiers. Ranger is a great school but I think that you would be lost unless you could get into a good Pre-Ranger. Even then if you want totally dedicated you may not perform so well. I would try to find some additional identifiers or skills for your MOS and try to go to those schools.

Air assault is good. How close are you to E-4? Apply for the Warrior Leadership Course if possible. You could always work on Structured Self Development 1 (SSD-1) which is required for WLC. Since this is such an unusual opportunity, maybe you should talk to a career counselor. This would be advantageous for two reasons: If you are looking at leaving the service, the career counselor may be able to point you to a school that would translate into the civilian job market. If you are making the army a career, that career counselor may be able to single out a school that boosts your chances for promotion or could lead to a reclassed MOS slot.

Well, I've read a couple comments here and they are solid. As a tanker, your battalion won't waste money to send you to airborne or Ranger school. In the early days, major Army installations had their own Air Assault schools, it was easier to then. But in all honesty, still not sure they'll spend the money to send you.
For advancement in Armor, you need to be sucking up as much civilian education as you can right now. You need to stay ahead of the game to be competitive against those support and admin MOS's who don't go to the field. Study for the Excellence in Armor program and take the test. Work on doing soldier of the month boards, then quarter working up to Post boards. And of course your job as a tanker. You want to fast track as much as you can. When you make SGT/E-5, push for Audie Murphy. That there if your accepted will put a huge check mark to your name.
I've been retired now for almost 10 yrs so a lot has changed. I'm not even sure how correspondence courses work now in making promotion points. Promotion points system changed about 5 times while I was in. Good luck young Padawan.

OH!!! Go searching for a metal oil can spout. It's save you lots of pain when adding oils to your beast. Also buy your own vampire. They aren't expensive.

I would try to knock out Air Assault first as it would be a plus for Airborne. I was in the same position as you but my Chain of command told me as a tanker it would be a waste of time to leave that for the 11 Bang Bang’s lol

Excellent points from SFC Jason Boyd and SSG Marquise Williams. Solid advice. “Promotion points” and “Asset to the unit” is some of the best advice here.

I went to the Unit Armorer course when I was in Germany. It was only two weeks from 7th Army Training Command when I attended. Used those skills in every unit after that. But don't make the mistake that my classmates and I did. We thought we were just fixing weapons. Half the job is administrative/ paperwork. A lot of jobs in the military are heavy on administrative duties.

If you can’t get anything else, college credit will count for something during and after the military.

Consider the communications field. There are many choices involved. You will need a security clearance and the level depends upon type of specialty. If your background is shady from your youth and onward you may need to look into other MOSs. Computer operations is another field that was just getting off the ground when I was on active duty.

Think of a job requiring clerical, supply and logistics. They may not sound heroic and exciting but such examples can give you experience once you're out of the military. Look at the long term: civilian life doesn't necessary want former Infantry and Airborne troops' experiences because those jobs are offensive in nature.

Consult a Career Counselor for assistance.

Don't forget about your benefits to college classes. By all means, if continued military service is your goal, attend technical spec classes...but don't forget about classes that will benefit you in both. Attaining a degree can benefit your military career and make you an asset as well. Specialty vocational classes are often offered at colleges as well. Most importantly...take something YOU would like...not just what your supervisor wants you to like.

Okay Young Tanker, here is a story for ya… Summer of 93 my CO end up pinning another ARCOM on me for excelling at something and says something to the effect, “Sergeant Mac we have given you a couple ARCOM’s, a couple of AAM’s, the CG award and we got nothin else… do you want to go to college?” I told him I would, but I’m not eligible to reenlist for a few more years (at the time to go to college was an reenlistment incentive)… and he cut me off, sayin “I didn’t say anything about reenlisting, I said do you want to go to college!” When I said yes sir, he then told me I needed to get enrolled ASAP.
Well my TC, PLT SGT and all the way up my chain, figured I would head over to the education center and sign up for an 8-week semester with Central Texas College, right on Ft. Riley. When I showed up a week later showing that I was enrolled for 16 credit hours at Kansas State University in Manhattan, KS, I’m pretty sure the common phrase was “oh you sneaky little bastard”. Granted, I did have to kiss the backside of the Dean of Admissions just to get in, but 13-weeks later I finished up with a 3.8 GPA and made the Deans list.
The following year I got stationed in Korea for a year and knocked out another 86 hours via Saturday classes at Camp Casey and correspondence courses. All of this didn’t make me a better tanker, but it did set me up for future endeavors and made me really good when it came to playing trivia crack.

I’d start with Delta school. Then you can pop by the Q course and cruise by Ranger School on your way to SOTIC. Air Assault is the 10 hardest days in the Army, so after you bang out DA Sniper you might be ready for those ropes.

The schools you mentioned are great… Truth is, post military, they are almost useless when it comes to tangle skills that transfer to civilian life, e.g., PLF, 5/15/25’s, etc. If what you are saying is true, I highly recommend you attend one of the many technical schools DoD has to offer… For example, if you are computer literate, see if you qualify for IT school… Again, just an example. What are you good at? What is it that you are naturally inclined to do as a hobby while earning a living to better support self, family, and country ? What I am trying to say is, if you are afforded the opportunity to attend a course, jump on it. Chose a course(s) that will help further your career is the Army as a servant leader while on a macro perspective, is transferable to the civilian world, e.g., PMP,Logistics certifications, etc… If you haven’t done so yet, start attending college. It is almost free to you as a AD service member… You are still guaranteed a paycheck… I attended many of the schools you mentioned… I am proud of the fact and have no regrets attending them… I still use many of the intangible skills I learned from them in life and as a retired veteran. I also served in a community that required the technical/survival skills garnered from said courses… Thank you for having the courage to ask and post your intelligent question. College credit counts for promo points E-4 to E-5 and later. Go to a nearby college or Vo-Tec school. Learn something useful, like computers, electronics, welding, engineering, nursing/emergency medicine etc, and college chicks 101 ain't bad either. And it gets you off post.

Often they will pay for it, and/or you can use parts of your GI BIll. Usually the Army will pay for it while you're in. Not sure how thing have changed since I was in ,but look into it.

I don’t see much in your profile to help us, so my advice is general in nature. First take a little time to consider what you want to be doing in 5 to 10 years. Pick schools that will support those goals. Don’t discount skilled trades as a future employment in or out of the Service. If you’re a hands on kind of person, ask for diesel mechanic school, jet engine mechanic school, aircraft maintenance school. If you like building stuff ask for engineer school (combat or Corps of Engineers).

Another thought. What schools are located at or near your current post. If one seems like something you’d like, ask for it. The decreased cost (no TDY) will make it easier for your command to say yes.

Ask if you can go to Ammo Handler or the Armorer course. These skills make you critical to your unit when it comes to helping with all ranges (small arms or gunnery) and maintenance/accountability of weapons and sensitive items. You can also build on the Armorer skills into full fledged gunsmithing skills, which make you a force multiplier later in your career, if you ever decide to go to SFAS and become an 18B, and in the civilian world for a variety of companies whether private security contractors, firearms manufacturers, or yourself. Begin with the end in mind. Would you rather handle piss bottles as the unit drug test guy or be an expert with weapons and ammunition, which is in line with your MOS and why you came into the Army?

Everyone's suggestions are good. The real question is where do you want to go from here? If you're thinking of making the Army a career and staying in for 20 years, look towards schools/MOS's that give you an opportunity for advancement, as long as you can qualify for them. If not, look towards education/MOS's/schools that can translate to the civilian world. Even if you plan on going the career path, I would still get that education/experience that can be used in the civilian world, at some point. Whatever experience you can get while in will translate to credited experience when you get out in the civilian job market. That will give you an advantage over other job applicants and may even translate to higher starting pay. For example, if you transition over to a clerical MOS and do that for 2 or 3 years, or however long, and get out, then you will have 2 or 3 years of clerical job experience when you apply for civilian jobs. When I was in, I knew several combat arms SFC's and MSG's who had 17 to 20 years in the Army and had no idea what they would do when they got out because their jobs did not translate well into the civilian job market. They were regretting not thinking about it until it was too late. This is a long reply, but the bottom line is think about what you want to do when you get out of the Army (whether that's in the near future or distant future) and aim to get experience/education to further that goal. As a retired Navy Senior Chief, I'd suggest that PFC Shaw look into an. electronics program. There are always radios, radar sets, etc. that are failing their start-up tests and need to be repaired. He would also be in the right path for a good electronics / com[puter job when he retires or gets out of the Army.

I am not sure what rank you are but if you are not an NCO yet You may consider going to turret mechanic or hull mechanic school if they will let you reclass. (AIT). You could always request to go back to 19K later?

Project Management is universally transferable across military industry and commerce.

Regardless what training you get, be sure to pick up documentation of training and maybe some sort of transferable certification. Keeping your future in mind is important your end of service comes quick and the civilian world is waiting for your strength and character. Some transferable training would be nice too.

I won't tell you go to any school, but rather choose a school that will enhance your MOS knowledge and build discipline. Airborne and Air Assault will give you bragging rights, but most tankers won't even care so it would just be a personal achievement. If I were to recommend anything it would be to take college classes. Take something that you can carry with you where ever you go, military or civilian!

You give very little information for a helpful answer. You no longer have tanks so what do you have? I f you do not have tanks then your no longer Armor. What is the units new designation. Are you Army reserve, NG or what? Sounds like you need to change MOS to suit the units New designation if that is the case then you pick a school that fits the needs of the unit. I don't know why every one wants to hide the real information then expect folks to understand. If it was me and the unit is paying for it the first course that i would take is a class in written communication.

I would choose a school that the MOS can be used in the civilian world, or you can find Field Artillery Units that has Self Propelled Howitzers and ask for a transfer or Infantry Units that has actual tanks in their TOE / MTOE inventory and ask for a transfer. You determine your MOS & Career path. Not the other way around. I forget the DA Form #. Its been 30 years since I retired.

Instead of telling you what you can not do.Talk to your unit schools N.C.O. There are all kinds of schools that people do not want to go to. Like field sation ,But every unit has to have the poeple. Take the school. it will show that you want to learn and help your unit's need's. This helps you look better, Witch means you will get promoted sooner. If you can get an Air Assault slot, I would go for that, if not, try something that will help you and the unit like NBC School, Armorer's Course, Air Load Planner's Course, Combat Lifesaver, etc. Some of these may have a rank prerequisite, I'm not sure. Also, ask about college. When I was sitting on promotion boards, civilian and then military education were two of the most underused areas for promotion points. Sit down with your Platoon Sergeant and First Sergeant and see what additional duties are open for alternates and see what school/training you can attend to qualify for one or more alternat positions.

Personally, I would try for air assault, airborne, rslc (as a scout....these were fairly easy to get (of course I got aa in my first year as an aviator at Campbell, reclassed to 19D and jump school and then assigned to 82d...so other schools were pretty easy to get. I don't know if rslc would be available for 19k, but any kind of reconnaissance or armor related schools would be good to know in your mos

Drop a flight packet and make the absolute best decision you’ll ever make. Go WOFT and become a helicopter pilot. The Army is extremely short on them, and while it’s competitive, definitely make yourself competitive for it. I say this without knowing if you meet the minimum requirements, but if you do, what’s the worst they can happen - they say no. As a former 19K I agree with whats been posted so far and will add that unless you're making the Army a career get in as much College as you can. Due to gunnery, ftx's, duty battalion, etc.. It took me years to get my Masters and Bachelors. Find something those degrees are actually good for on the outside because there's not much call for former tankers.

If you plan on making the Army a career then you should diversify with a MOS in Combat Support or Combat Service Support. You will have more opportunities for assignments and promotions with more than one MOS.

Not much for Tankers besides MG and you're only a PFC (which rules out a LOT) Now if you're looking to change MOS, there's a few that take packets and your unit has nothing to say about it. So option 1:reclass to packet MOS
Option 2: sit, wait, be a tanker who hates his life (lots of that going around)
Option 3: sit, wait, be a tanker who hates his job but knocks out a bunch of college (in a decent major, don't do early Siamese literature or Communications, or criminal justice like lazy ROTC cadets).
Option 4: basic troop schools at your post such as: armorer, bus driver, rcied/cuas, digital MG, security+, etc..
Option 5: be a nug gym rat who's too heavy to casevac

That should about cover it.

What good do those schools do a Tanker?!?!?
This is why the army has problems. We claim certain schools are immediate promotion for anyone.
What does a tanker with jump wings say to me? Someone either didn't get Selected, or messed up in a job where ABn matters and got stuck as a K.
It sucks, but it's the life of a tanker, sit in your unit until you can be a MG, or reclass.
Some MOS just don't need/get "high speed" schools.

We need to be smarter as an Army, and promote people being good at their MOS, not wasting time/money/and slots sending every junior enlisted to AASLT, ABN, and Ranger unless they may actually use those courses in warfare.

18 years, plenty of chances to go Ranger, but didn't because a 19D, 38B, or 170B doesn't need that to do their job, there's more useful schools.

My thought is to get your platoon SGT and go talk to the ISG and maybe the CSM as ask what they need someone to go to school for and let them guide you. SFC Boyd has a good point with the Air Assault School as well. My suggestion gets your decision to have the support of the NCO chain and that can help. Otherwise, it's possible to just piss everyone off especially if the unit is transitioning to something else like Arctic Airborne Operations or some new improved Armor System. They obviously think you have potential, or you'd find yourself welded to a lawn mower someplace. Being basically a duty troop sucks. Play your cards right, and learn how to approach your NCOs for advice and guidance. You'd be surprised at how many of us don't really get that...I didn't, and thus made my life more complicated than it needed to be.

If your young and in good health request to go to Airborne School or Ranger, your Army and you deserve to attend any unit that you might think you are fit for , but be aware that it's going to be a more that you are asking for, I am also a Tanker trained on the M60 A-1, I wanted to go Airborne, but needed to relisted the ex didn't like the military life, but I did, this is one message to you if you are going to make a career in the Army stay single it will work better for you will always love them and leave them until the time comes to wed, but in the mean time HOOAH!

Hey brother I am retired a 1SG a year ago and you can get those schools as a tanker because I had airborne and air assault. Don’t let anyone tell you can’t because that’s what they all said to me. Just go to the schools guy and each battalion has some many slots and a lot of times no one goes and they send you.

I was an 11B and honestly the best things I ever went to were Unit Movement Officer, Air Movement Control Officer with hazmat (AMCO/Chapter 33 moves), and we were using TC-AIMS II. Best additional duties that units love to see you have, and they are worth money on the outside for contracting. I got offered 4x the contracting pay for having those certs. Lots of extra work, but so worth the street cred you'll get. Having all 3 was like a godsend for the next unit I went to on priority 1 orders. Officers generally have no idea what they are doing but are tasked with these as LT's, so it helps to have an NCO that can show them/do it and they just sign off since it is just unrealistic for them to learn it all in one year. Hope this helps anyone that reads it.

I will give you solid advice that will benefit you in the long run. 1. If you plan to do 20 years, reclassify to a job that will transition or translate to the civilian world. You won't see any tanks rolling and shooting targets on I-95. The closest thing to a tank would be APC driver for some big city police department swat team. Until you are able to reclass, take schools or classes that will benefit you in the civilian world. Also get promoted to 5 ASAP. Here are some courses or schools: Haz-11/12/15, Air loaders planning course, SHARP/SARC, UPL, Bus Driver, Fork lift operator, IT security +, OSHA General industry courses, etc. It doesn't hurt to be diversified in different areas.

Ask your schools NCO about Master Gunner or Battle Staff, especially if you're thinking of staying long term. Not sure if you're in the proper rank range to do so though. Otherwise, look at getting your NCOES done; finish prior to promotions, if possible. Depending on your unit's OPTEMPO night college classes are also a viable option. If you're comfortable with distance learning OPTEMPO shouldn't be a concern.

Go to whatever school you want to go to, after you do some research (like you're attempting to do on this site)... and never listen to naysayers!!! Just because your unit / MOS isn't technically Airborne anymore - well, that doesn't mean you wouldn't make a great Airborne Soldier. Many troops have tried something different from their primary MOS and almost all have gone on to be outstanding at being Special Forces, or Rangers, or Aviators, or Counterintelligence Special Agents, or CID Special Agents, or Lawyers, or Doctors, or Nurses, etc, etc. Whatever your ambition is - do not be deterred by anyone and chase hard after your dreams while you're young!

I am a retired (from Federal Government) IT Specialist/Project Manager. If available, I strongly recommend Cyber Security and or anything in the Database arena. Albeit there are multiple layers in the IT arena, securing the systems and maintaining information/data is always going to be in high demand in the Military and the Civilian sector, no matter what changes occur, Security and Data are always going to be in the mix at multiple levels.

Closest I ever came to ground pounder was being assigned to an LHD. That said, here's a couple of questions for you:

Do you intend to make a career out of the military?
If not, have you given any consideration to what you want to do when you are no longer "in"?

A lot of folks in the Service have positions that are difficult to translate into civilian skill sets. While leadership and management skills are useful everywhere, it is often worthwhile to think about what happens "after".

You haven't given enough information in your OP to provide targeted advice, but I would be thinking about where you go once you get out.

According to your Armor (Career Management Field 19) Career Progression Plan, "Soldiers with GT scores below 100 should seek to improve their scores through the Functional Academic Skills Test, commonly referred to as FAST." If your GT is below 100, I recommend you go to your Education Center to sign up for the FAST course. If it is above 100, please note the following from your CPP, "Completion of 15 college semester hours is recommended for promotion consideration to SGT." This might sound as high speed as Airborne, Ranger, or SAPPER, but imagine having one of these schools and being passed up for SGT because you did not have the necessary college or the necessary GT score to be able to enroll in Master Gunnery School, but the person that beat you did have these.

I just read a comment that said you couldn't go to any of the Ford schools you were considering. After 4 years of screwing with the army I can tell you without reservation you can go just about anywhere you want if you are pesty enough. For me, my top two choices would be cooking school or OCS. Fact is, the army tried to get me to go to OCS which I guess was there form of reverse psychology because they knew I would tell them where to stick it. Anyway best of luck brother.

That's a tough one for this old trooper. When I was still in the Army tank crewmen were all 11E! Believe you should consider a school that would enhance and, support your current career field. Those mentioned don't do either. Why not Tracked Vehicle or, Turret Mechanic?

I tried to get into Defensive Language Institute.
Passed their entrance battery exam with flying colors.
Had received a letter of acceptance from the commandant, and letters of release from my entire chain of command...until it hit the 7th division commander's desk, where my request to attend was denied.

Tanker, the military gives people great opportunities. The question is, what do you want to do with your future? Based on the answer to that question will help you make a better decision for yourself. I say reach to the stars. Do not limit yourself based on another person’s opinion. If you want to do something like attend ranger, airborne, or any other challenging course, you will succeed if you want to. Having a strong mental mindset will get you through anything. Follow your dreams and don’t let others tell you that you will fail or it doesn’t do anything for your MOS. I do agree with the rest of the members that college is an absolute great place to start if you’re not already sure of what you want to do with your future. College helps to prepare you for your second career when you leave the military. Yes we all work after the military. The choice is yours and you have so much to look forward to success in your life. The best advice that I can give is for you to take a look at what schools the Army has available and what would interest you and you can qualify.
In 1965 my enlistment was ending. I was a tanker and I had I was 20 years old. Before my discharge I checked in what was available. I ended up reenlisting for The Optical Lab school. It was the best thing that I ever did.
I stayed in the Army until 1974. Since then, I have never been unemployed. I have worked as a dispenser worked in labs and managed Optical Labs.
I setup an optical lab for High End Optical Company for 19 years. I then worked for a lens manufacture until my retirement in 2013. This job was fantastic, I set up the Technical Service Department and did installs and training for Digital Man Lens Production in Labs.
I did this for the US, Canada, Mexico, Colombia. Chile, Brazil and Argentina.
I was fortunate I chose the right thing and there is no regrets and tremendous appreciation for my time in the Army.

I went from 42A to 12B and it was the best choice I could ever make. We do field training every 3 months and of course our AT is always engineer based ( gunnery demo and quals etc ) I was about to cut it after 17 years and reclassing to combat engineer has kept me going and I’m no 27 days from 20 good years. Choose wisely and find something you love to do

I would think your unit is transitioning to a new mission. Normally they would have you attend a school to meet/support the new mission, e.g., Armor BTN to Infantry 11B. But if they are giving you free rein to choose whatever school you want, then choose one that transfers to the civilian world and potentially makes you a decent income. Aviation fields come to mind. Cyber Security makes big $ on the outside. You might need a security clearance = more outside opportunities. Of course, make sure you are interested in it. Don't waste it. I am Airborne, but that is not an MOS. Ranger School also isn't an MOS and you need to be in the best physical shape of your life to pass it. You also need to be highly proficient in combat arms to even think about attending. Night land nav, adv lifesaving, competent on all small arms, fire and move techniques, and that is only 5%. Less than 60% ever pass.

WHen I was in my uiit (Sig),sent me to 7th Army NCO academy while my MOS was 05C10 then 05C40 after making E-5 . There were other guys in the Btln. that while commo MOS went to generator school etc. As far a I knew you could go anywhere provided your unit TDY'd you. Having said that why not try to opt for something that would deal directly with the tanks and or their supporting vehicles 2nd or even 3rd eschelon maintenance etc. or perhaps as in my case some leadership training?

I would recommend doing something that will give you a good career when you get out or retire. I'm biased but technology is always good to get into so signal/cyber would be my recommendation. 25B or 17C if you can get through it are good. You don't need much to make a good career with these paths.

Get u an old manual study 11b and sign up for airborne.if u survive that go ranger an pathfinder.
Get prepared physically to run all day.500 push ups a day 500 sit ups a day. Run walk mail box to mailbox in ur naba hood.push urself hard and u can do this also get a rope and hang it up high in an oak tree .climb it as much as possible until u can squirrel that rope in rope high in seconds

Start with your military school to progress to the next rank. College is a good idea too. Also look at opportunities to increase your skills set. Ranger School is a great leadership school if you are planning on staying in the Army. If your base does not have a good training pipeline for the school, look to an Officer or NCO who is willing to mentor you. It makes for a great bullet point on their OER/NCOER, so it shouldn’t be too hard to do. I’ve read that the 82nd is looking to get back Armor into its ranks. It may be worth while to go to Airborne school if available. Air Assault is easier to get though. Good luck in whatever you choose to do.

There are always classes to go to. Some are local "unofficial" (like Ft Bragg's old "Recondo" class) and others are more well defined across bases and commands.
You list as a Specialist E-4. #1 choice - go to a Basic Leadership Course. It should open you to at least a lateral to Cpl. On the high end of the spectrum, talk to the Special Operations recruiter on your base. See what they have and what you might qualify for. On the lower end, look at what internal training your base is offering. Every unit has to be proficient in CBRN (in my day NBC). I once got to take a class in NBC that went way beyond basic training. I learned how to use chem/bio sensors. I learned how to plot radioactivity patterns. I got a dual assignment as asst NBC NCO for our unit in 2ID. Ask about range safety officer roles. Think outside the box. 1983 - SSG Bryant, my Basic Training Sergeant (one of them) stated it this way... "Welcome to the Army. You will never stop training. Every day has a lesson for anyone who wants to learn from it." Take the initiative and you will find promotion points for the taking.

If the first place, it would be nice if your unit actually gave you some ideas of what schools to attend. :) That being said, my advice is to start taking some classes in a field that would be helpful to you in the civilian world. If you're tech savvy, take some computer courses...or maybe some courses in a medical field. Take something that leads to a career that's going to be around for the long term.

I had to laugh at your statement "I am a tanker who’s unit doesn't currently have tanks. I worked in the Intelligence community for 11+ years of my 20+ year career as a tactical data system admin. One of our favorite lines was "I'm in an Intelligence unit that doesn't currently have any intelligence." Of course some would argue that the term "Marine Intelligence" is an oxymoron. As far as school, anything you're qualified for that you think will help your military tour, or your civilian life after. I have two buddies here at the VFW... one was an air conditioner mechanic in the Army. The other was water filtration and plumbing systems in the Navy. Both of them are making $$ 6 figures $$ a year, and don't have enough time to get to all their customers. Good luck with your service time.

I'm a retired Tanker...36 years in the Armor/Cavalry business. I highly recommend requesting BLC, unless you already have it. Graduating BLC opens the door for the rest of the NCOES to you. I also shows initiative. Look into distance learning courses as well...perhaps a turret or track mechanic course. If Combat Lifesaver is still offered, get that under your belt. At your current rank (E4) there's not really a whole lot of course options for you. There is a Reserve Component Tank Commander course in Idaho that you could look into, but I think there's a rank requirement of E5 to attend. Consider an Armorer course (Small Arms Repair). Hang around your Company Master Gunner and learn from him/her. If nothing else, go talk to someone at your local Education Office and consider taking some online college courses. My best advice to a young Soldier is to take care of your career, because no one else will do it for you. Also...you get nothing if you don't ask for it. Good luck.

I personally would never discourage a young soldier from going to Ranger School, no matter what their MOS is. Yes there will be a learning curve, but there is nothing a Ranger Handbook, tenacity, and finding the resources you need to teach you what you don't know before you attend can't handle. Thier is a myriad of "prep courses" available online you can follow to ensure you are in the physical shape you need to be in to be successful. Grit, determination, and a never quit under any circumstance mindset isn't taught. You either have it, or you don't.

Ranger School is a leadership school that uses patrolling and battle drills as its teaching methodology, and sleep deprivation, time constraints, and minimal food rations is used to amplify the stress. It's open to ALL MOS's and has been successfuly passed by many in your same position. Earning your Tab will get you promoted ahead of your peers throughout your career.
Telling someone they'd fail because of XYZ is not advice I'd give to any young soldier. Instead, I'd advise them of what it entails, guide them to the resources that will aid to their success, teach, coach and mentor them.
Good leadership encourages soldiers to push pass their perceived boundaries, and set them up for a successful career. Weak leadership tells others they can't do it or won't make it, based on thier own personal perceived limitations.
If I woukd have listened to leadership who said I wouldn't make it, I wouldn't have went to SF selection(SFAS). Instead, I proved them wrong and spent my last 15 years in 3rd SFG(A) as an 18E.
Dont ever let anybody ever tell you that you can't achieve your goals.

Warrior leader course would be a start if your E4 promotable. Look for a second dairy school for your mos. See what the unit has that they need to fill a spot and and see if you can go to that school. Example, your a tanker but they need a tank mechanic. See if you can get that or something along the lines where you can cross train yourself and others

I would ask yourself? What is your future plans? I'm guessing your currently at a young age guessing less than 25 years old? Do you plan to make the Army a career and retire at 20 years active? Or are you still on your initial enlistment? Even at that if you've already reenlisted for how long? And do you still plan on doing 20 years? The reason, I say this is if staying in the Army is not your future plans then take the time that you have and work on a college education or vocational education for when you leave the army. Like it or not as a 19K there's not much career opportunities in the civilian world for a former tanker. I say that because there is not a whole lot of civilian opportunities in any combat related career fields besides law enforcement and security work. Career fields such as medical, mechanical, logistics, automation and computer's have a wide range of civilian opportunities. I would suggest possibly to reclass into another MOS, but that MOS would still be based off your ASVAB score. The ASVAB score you took when you entered the Army? However, if that score you took is a little low you can re-take the ASVAB and just take the sections that will raise the line score that you need to qualify for your targeted new MOS or you can just take the whole test over again. Just remember if it's just sections or the whole test that you take, that will be your new score. No, going back to what you originally scored. So, if you improve great if you go lower too bad, too sad. If you plan to stay in and get your 20 by all means head for the top, do ranger school and any of those other top combat related schools to make yourself more valuable to the Army. And serve your country well. This country needs great people and to grow new leaders in uniform. Good luck.....

I went to night school to study Criminal Justice while I was on active duty, and once out I became a police officer. If not police work ,firefighting, EMT, teaching or something you what to do??? After 37 years in the Army, I suggest you apply to schools that interest you. They may interest you because they will have a good chance of enhancing your career (assuming you want a military career). Or they may interest you because, well, they’re something you want to do! I went to jump school as an ROTC cadet and then became an armor officer. I never went near an airborne unit. Those wings remain one of my most cherished emblems. Great memories and the opportunity to do something challenging! Be careful with “Don’t do such-and-such because it doesn’t obviously benefit what you’re doing at the moment” advice. You don’t know what lies ahead — except the rest of your life: live it! If you want to go to Ranger school and the Army lets you, well. . .

Go to a school that’s going to benefit you in the long run. Intel is good and work your way to a Top Secret Clearance. The schools that you mentioned are good but in the long run, take advantage what you can do in the future. Intel, engineering, logistics, computers, etc. Depends what you want. Good luck.

For promotion points and maybe a bit easy peasy, Hazmat, forklift. Something like that. If you want something on your uniform, Air Assault is possibly your best bet but PT your ass off. Get those Push-ups crisp and to the letter (practice touching the ground and straight up). It's a good opportunity

This is a career decision, if your looking at schools your looking to stay in, I don't know how long you have been in or how long you have until retirement, but those are factors. Sure the phrase "I was (insert cool job here)" sounds good but if it isn't followed with a truthful "and I was really happy about that decision", the job wasn't worth it. Look at the list of schools available to you and honestly ask, "Can I do that until I can retire and be happy?" if the answer is no or maybe keep looking. You get choose wisely, and trained up right you might be doing that job as a civilian and heading for second pension. I was handed a 3X5 card full on both sides of the schools I could pick and I picked the one that would get me into a place I wanted to be but as the Navy version of a grunt doing grunt work. I went to sub school and I became a Submariner and I do not regret that decision one bit. Once there I found a job I had aptitude and attitude for and went for it, I was promoted first round because I liked what I did and it was easy for me to learn. I don't care what branch you are or were in, the advice is the same, find the job you are going to enjoy and be good at and you will do well. E-8 pension and ID card are exactly the same no mater what job you did so do the job that will get you to E-8 with a smile on your face.

Unless Ranger School has changed since the late 70s when I attended, the course is more about guts and selfless service to others. Peak physical fitness is a prerequisite but the peer rating system will weed out any self-serving narcissists. The Ranger Cadre will try to make you quit the first week. Be prepared to run until you collapse. NEVER drop out of a run on your feet! Never desert your Ranger buddy, even if he drops out. Carry him if you must. Always give 100% support to the one who is designated patrol leader…even when you are completely exhausted. Ranger school will let you know what type of man you are. Ranger school will let everyone else know what type of man you are as well! Be prepared to die rather than quit. You will never forget what you learn in Ranger School.

In my day in alot of medical units they had what they called "FastMOS" programs, which, with the support of my chain of command I was able to gain TONS of additional training, MOS's and experience that helped me in many other areas of my career(s). Maybe there's still some programs like that you could participate in.

I don't know what they will let you do, but one thing your unit will have need of is people with medical training. I know that it isn't the direction most folks are discussing, but you can make a big difference for your unit and everybody loves "Doc"...
I am years away from the Army and was in a light armored infantry scout unit, so if this sounds like something you would consider, find someone who knows what they are talking about,. :)

Combat lifesaver course was fun and only a week long and worth promotion points.

Before I retired in 2021 they were allowing 19K and 19D to attend airborne school especially since they moved to Benning. Things change therefore I don't know the current climate so to speak. All I can say is I've known plenty of tankers and scout with jump wings. 5 jump chumps they used to say. Air assault perhaps also. Get promoted and I believe Master Gunner school (also Benning) was accepting E-5s. Not an easy course, especially depending on how much tank experience you have. You need to get promoted regardless. There's always Recruiting or Drill. If not any of that works then get a college degree then go Green to Gold or put in a Warrant Officer packet. Talk with your schools NCO.

Try going to an NBC school or course or combat engineer school.
Airborne is out we don't drop M551s anymore.
Ranger School is out it would only benefit you if you were infantry and most likely you would get washed out for being the odd man out.
Sapper School as well.
Sniper school will be very hard to just get in, your unit may not have a slot for such a position and priority will be going to Infantry, Ranger, EOD and SF
Cross Training with TOWs would be good or going to such a training course. Too bad we still don't have 106 recoilless anymore they were a lot of fun.
Forward Observer course.
Demolitions course.
I don't recall what courses that would help in bridge identification and fording areas. a scout course of some kind could help. Know what bridges Armor can cross over safely is always good to know. or what locations one can cross without having to wait for a scissor bridge to show up.

These are just ideas that benefit you and your unit.

Figure out what floats your boat and go or it. I have 4 mos schools, 2 college degrees, and volunteered for what ever military training came around as long as was at least 1 weeks long. Find out what works for you in service and after you get out. There is no civilian use for a tanker and contrary to what they all say alot of civilian companies do not want you because you will most likely be over qualified and to fired up for them. Education is the key for both military and civilian world. And not just college. Depending on what you want to do technical schools can work also.

I would base it on what comes after the Army!! I would go engineer and heavy equipment operator or mechanic. Maybe night college for an engineering degree. Want to be a jumper? There are civilian Jumper schools out there, Its a lot easier without having someone screaming at ya. You can really build your future in the military, but only your personal drive will get you there, or not. You gotta plan ahead and have a goal for your retirement years. I left in 92 at 53, and I still work. (because I want to.)

Thanks for the memory. In Vietnam I served with a ”brown shoe Army” Personnel Sgt. who reported to his Armored Unit in WWII as a tank driver. They also had no tanks. When they found out he knew what a typewriter was, he was made Company Clerk. Thirty days later, they got tanks, which he operated until he couldn’t walk, hear, or think. But by God he was a soldier and the Army took care of its own, so his records were reviewed and because he had been Company Clerk, he was OJT Personnel. I know he went from Vietnam to Ft. Lewis, WA. I suspect he retired afterwards. He was a quiet and decent man. What school? Things are so different now I couldn’t begin to guess. I can only wish you the best.

Start by going to BLC, (Basic Leaders Course) In my reserve unit, we had limited promotion slots, so it was a requirement to make NCO, it's a great course that will prepare you. There are several schools like it as you work your way up the ranks but that's the best start you can do. It's good for promotion points if nothing else, and even if it's not a requirement for you to go before the NCO board, it's good to go to each of the leadership courses as soon as you can.

Not sure what your rank is but if it's SGT, if you haven't done your respective leadership course, that should priority 1. If you have then I might look into Master Fitness Trainer Course (MFTC), ACFT Level Certification, and/or Battle Staff NCO Course if possible. Those courses will make you more marketable and vital to your units readiness. If you aren't an NCO then disregard for now and apply to the other schools you've listed, but keep those three in mind because they will matter once you get your stripes. I think you do want you. What have you been doing; have you look into Field Artillery. There is many MOS in Field Artillery there about five different jobs there. And there many more field to get into MP, and many more MOS.

I too started my military career as a tanker on the old M60A3 and finally the M1A2. Back when Fort Knox was the "school of armor". I later attended the Military Police School at Fort McClellan, AL while serving in the National Guard, I enjoyed it so much I attended an MP refresher/Train the trainer course at Fort Leonardwood, MO on the active side and conducted all of my overseas duty as garrison and combat operations as Military Police. This MOS can set you up for Law Enforcement duty on the civilian side should you ever decide to leave military service. I enjoyed being Military Police so much I took several Master Instructor courses and became a Military Police OCT/M (Observer Controller Trainer/Mentor) to deploying soldiers to garrison and combat zones overseas. Tanks were fun. but I feel the effects of climbing on and off of them in my old age. Just a share young Warrior.

Take the Electronics Data Processing Test. Once you pass this test (which might take more than one try) you can attend the course to learn about computers, or maybe now go directly into cybersecurity. If you don't like computers, learn to. There are tons of jobs and incredible pay! Right now, we are discussing the establishment of a standalone Cyberforce. Discussing, not committing to it. The pay as a civilian after military service gets up to $150k a year.
I have been out of the Marine Corps for 30 years. I am now a GS-14 with CISA attending the National Defense University College of Information and Cyberspace working towards a master's degree with Colonel's from around the world.
