I am always at a loss for words whenever someone thanks me for my service. What is your go-to response?

SrA John Monette I will respond with "it was an honor to serve", or "You are welcome", or "Thank you". It is sometimes awkward, but I would rather have them thank me for my service than the responses that I received years ago.

I usually also go with, "It was an honor to serve, You're quite welcome." If it seems to fit the situation I will also reach out to shake the person's hand, especially if it a youngster or teenager. Unless there is a question or comment with the original interaction, then I just try to tailor to suit the situation.

"It was my honor and pleasure. I'd go back in a heartbeat if I wasn't old and broken."
