I am an E-5 25B in an E-7 slot. Is this better for my career?

Possible. To put this in perspective, I was an SGT in a SFC slot, then I made SSG and all my NCOERs were rated Promote Ahead of Peers, and have been selected for SFC. All of this within a 5 year period. Your career is what you make it.

In of itself, I don't believe that HRC considers if someone does a duty above grade. What will count, and can potentially enhance your career is your evaluated performance while sitting in an above grade role. Make sure you get proper recognition for your efforts on your NCOER. It can even have an indirect influence if your role in the higher slot effects a larger sphere of Soldiers. This effect can be positive for thise sections of your NCOER that relate to intangibles associated with character and presence bullets

EDIT: I do think that Soldiers should be reviewed at the level of job in which they are performing. There is a big difference between the E5 and E6-8 NCOERs

If someone gave you enough trust in you to do the job in that position, it speaks highly of you. Make the most of it, and don't disappoint who ever placed you there. You're always supposed to look two ranks up from where you are, and you're in that spot. Make it work.

All depends on your performance reports and sometimes those don't help if your not up to standards, i.e. weight, or, physical disability, not being able to deploy, etc. You may still get great reviews and reports but the higher ups will look at the negatives first, at least in my experience but that was 30 yrs ago.

Yes, because if you do the job proficiently and are proactive with tasks given to you, it will prove that you are able to handle responsibilities of those that are higher in the chain of command to you. This looks very good when reviewed for promotion, and speaks volumes on your resume when looking for gainful civilian employment.

It can be good for your NCOER however promotions go by points for E-5/E-6. It may not help you get promoted faster but it is a great chance to advance your knowledge and skill set. Good luck.

Anytime you work above your pay grade, and get recognized or it shows on your NCOER, it is great for your career- showing that you can work above your pay grade is what promotion boards want to see.

Make sure this gets documented in your NCOER and it is reflected in your ERB. It says a lot about you from the get go but you need to make sure that you have a solid performance in that job. That type of performance for a Junior NCO should be rewarded with at least an IMPACT award (remind them you still need to make points!) Good job!

With the role being IT it may be based on knowledge more so than leadership regardless you have convinced someone of your abilities to perform the role. Great job.
