My most profound Army regret is not getting Airborne in my contract, because getting a school slot when it wasn't in my contract put me as a mech Infantry guy near the back of the priority list. Even if your get it in your contract, it may take a while to go; a couple guys from my Infantry OSUT platoon had to wait in Airborne hold for months! If you're in a NG Infantry unit your chances are much better but it's still difficult. NG Infantry units also often get seats in Ranger school too. If you're saying you want to go to a Ranger Bat, you'd have to be AD.

1-143 Inf in RI/TX/AK is the only Airborne Infantry that I'm aware of in the Guard. The seats would probably be very easy to get in those units. Getting into 20th Group right off the street can be tricky. I had a friend that managed to get their approval but he is an exceptional physical specimen and also had a 4 year degree. That's not to say it's impossible. If you haven't shipped for BCT yet, your best bet might be to try and get out of your current contract and go for another one for either 18X or that has guarantees for Airborne and Ranger. First you have as good of a chance of getting into Ranger school as Astronaut school in the Guard. They have scaled back the school and there are very few slots for Guard guys unless you know somebody that can pull strings. My old armory had MP's and 20th Group commo in the same building and I picked up a few things, but am no means do I know much about it. My suggestions are just what I would do and there may be some people that know better than me for sure. First, get through Basic and AIT. Once that is done find the closest 20th Group armory and go visit them. Let them know you are thinking about becoming a snake eater and see if they have any positions for a support role with them. If they do you will have to put a request for transfer in to change units and then the powers to be will decide if they will let you go. You may have to change MOS, but most Guard guys have several. It will be easier for you if you have a better understanding of what is required if you get it from the guys that have been there and done that. At some point, I would suggest you get a study guide for SF. There are a ton of test you have to take and pass before you will even be looked at. I have heard the language test has a high failure rate and is what stops most people. I had a friend that failed the language test twice and he studied the guide for months. He was super smart. He said it was no joke.

Now in saying all that, why would you not want to become an MP? We are just like SF, but we also get to write tickets for 3mph over the speed limit and get to say things like, "Don't mistake your rank for my authority." Or when you walk into the DFAC and you hear "Fucking MPs" you know it is because of jealousy from guys that are just regular army who only get to do things like drive tanks or jump out of airplanes...boring. MP is where the cool factor really is. We are so cool the Army gave us our own our own velcro patches that say "MP" to let everybody know we are the siznat. SF and Rangers just get a tab. Just doing the math....that is only like a 1/4 the size of MP awesomeness. Not everybody gets to be MP cool all the time. Think about it. Just saying. "Death before dismount!" Response by SGT William Howell made Feb 16 at 2017 4:38 PM 2017-02-16T16:38:52-05:00 2017-02-16T16:38:52-05:00 CPT Lawrence Cable 2347379

I guess my advice at this point would be to see if you can change your contract to include the REP63/18X option. And because you have not yet been to OSUT, as an Infantryman, you could try and gain an 18X contract, which would send you through SFAS immediately after OSUT. So that's an option for you. If you get Selected, you'll go to Airborne School, and then the SFQC. However, those slots are few and far between.

Option two; go through OSUT, get a good, solid understanding of your job, see if you can reenlist under the Active component, spend some time on the Line and determine if it is a lifestyle you would like to do on an upper echelon. Because I can tell you, the ARNG and the AD Infantry are VERY different. And if 20th Group is your goal, my advice to you would be to spend some time on Active Duty prior to trying out for the long tab.

And to conclude, understand that the Special Operations way of life is not an easy one. It requires that you be available with almost no notice, and that you be capable of operating on an elite level, both alone and accompanied. It is one of the hardest walks of life in the world, and is not for the faint of heart. If this is your goal, I wish you all the best of luck and success. I will be shooting for an 18D CMF in the coming years, and I look forward to crossing paths with you under the same headgear.
