Not sure how the COVID restrictions at Benning are currently, but for Christmas Exodus, it usually happens that as soon as Christmas Break rolls around (dates will be designated), all troops WILL be sent home for Leave unless otherwise dictated (Soldiers in trouble, etc.). It will be Charged Leave. All instructions for Christmas Break during training will be given out by your Drill Sergeants/Cadre.

Congratulations on your acceptance into the US Army! I was there for Officer Candidate School in 1966, graduated 27 Jan 1967 and was ordered to Ft Bragg and the 3SFG(A). Had gone through Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training at Ft Jackson. Ft Benning is a huge post and you’ll come know it quite well. The programs have undoubtedly changed substantially since then but you’ll be given opportunities to excel. Follow the instructions of those appointed over you and stay out of trouble. You’ll make friends who will last a lifetime.

Some will tell you about what it was like way back, others including me will tell you what it was like 2 years ago when my son became an Infantrymen and then there is what will ACTUALLY happen to you once you start. Start getting use to constant change and adjusted expectations. You will have a much better idea once you report, compared to what you will be told to expect. On a side note, based upon my short time in uniform expect the worst outcomes and enjoy the surprising good ones. An old saying about if an Infantryman stops bitching then things have gotten bad. Enjoy the ride, keep your expectations low and you will survive. By reading your post I can tell you will do very well in the Infantry :)

1) Fort Benning.
2) You're going in winter, that's going to suck. Nothing like digging a ranger grave in cold Georgia earth which is full of clay and tree roots.
3) No idea how the rest of it is going to go for you. Women are integrated at Benning now, and COVID restrictions probably still require a mask.
4) Don't get fat and lose your discipline on Christmas Exodus.
5) Even when you're right, you're wrong.

Ooh autocorrect got you didn't it? I mean, I'm assuming that was autocorrect.

I don't know what basic has been like anywhere during covid. Generally during basic/AIT there's Exodus for Christmas. Everyone gets the opportunity to take leave. If you don't have enough, they'll generally approve it but then you'll possibly be negative when you get out of basic/AIT to your first unit. Or won't have as much leave. It's 2 weeks.

Take it if you can. If you stay there, you're going to be doing details all the time (so I've heard from those who did stay).

The mass exodus during the Christmas Holiday for entry level trainees is pretty normal for almost everyone from what I can tell. Other than the bad eggs who give a reason for their leave to be denied it looks like Boot Camps dumps everyone out on Holiday leave. I have been in the Atlanta airport to watch the march of privates as they shuffle along in a way of wave of dress uniforms. It's an odd sight for Marines to understand because it isn't something we do during Boot Camp. Just keep your nose clean and do your job and you'll get to take leave along with everyone else.

And it's Benning not Bennington.

Good afternoon PVT Private RallyPoint Member. Excellent post. And I think that You have a couple of typos here. I recall being at Ft. Benning, which is now Ft. Moore. I was there May 2010. The weather was mostly warm and humid most days. Not sure about the Winter weather there. Expect a lot of training days to include a lot of PT days as well. I embraced the suck, but managed to make it through. I recall when I was there a recruit tried to escape from there, but was caught by the MPs.

Basic training is where you will receive basic combat training and after completion be a soldier. If you are going to basic now Basic Training will be over before Christmas Break. Prepare your self to be physically and mentaly challenged. Your drill sergeants will be your first mentors in the Army. .
