Headphones – (para 3-6a(3))
(3) Unless the unit or installation commander otherwise prohibits, Soldiers
may use headphones, including wireless or non-wireless devices and
earpieces, in uniform while performing individual physical training in
indoor gyms or fitness centers. Soldiers may not wear headphones while
taking the Army Physical Fitness Test. Soldiers may not wear head-phones
beyond the permitted area in any manner, including around the neck or
attached to the uniform. Headphones will be conservative and discreet. Ear
pads will not exceed 1 1/2 inches in diameter at the widest point. Soldiers
may wear electronic devices, such as music players or cell phones, as
prescribed above; Soldiers may also wear a solid black arm-band to store and
carry electronic devices in the gym or fitness center. Soldiers may not wear
the armband beyond the permitted area.

If you're not in PT uniform, I would say that it's ok. If you're in PTs then I don't think you can. It also depends on your installation's policy.

SFC Fuerhoff,
I don't think that this still answers the question though. The person pacing the Soldier is not in fact taking the APFT so it would not effect them. However I do agree with previous responses that I would just advise against it. While it doesn't say anything in particular about it in the regulations, it would possibly be seen as unfair.

SGT (Join to see) - The reg seems to state if you're in uniform during PT you can't wear those devices outside in general. So if he's pacing and he's in PT uniform I don't think you can. If he's in civilian clothes, then he could. How would it be unfair?

SFC Kelly Fuerhoff I totally agree that if the pacer is in uniform then it wouldn't be allowed, but if in civilian clothes then it would be fine. The only reason that I said it might be seen as unfair is because not every Soldier would have it done for them. There might be the Soldier who would complain that they didn't receive the same advantage.

Let them complain. Some people don't like to have music when they run. Some do. It isn't going to change someone's run time drastically. It's not like it's steroids or something.

Soldiers always complain too. That's nothing new.

On APFTs that I have conducted, I have been asked this question. My answer is that, as long as no one is wearing ear buds, then I'm good with it.

I would advise against it based on the "unfair advantage" clause in the PT FM.
Ultimately, this is a call made by the event NCOIC.
