I am reclassing to 25B in the Army Reserve. What can I expect? And how can I parlay this into the civilian world?

There is always a need for IT in the civ world. Get all the certification that you can on the Army's dime this will increase your portfolio when applying for jobs as a civ. I am in USACAPOC and we had 2 25B assigned to my Company for a short time. At the company they didn't do much other then work on the computers when they had problems. Our BN is split into 2 parts on different sides of the state. I would highly recommend that you transfer to either a Command level that has a full time IT Dept or somewhere that has a lot of traffic like USACAPOC at Bragg. My Soldier didn't do his actual school trained job being assigned to a company level but brought his experience from his civ job to the unit. Hope that helps

What MOS are you reclassifying from? 25B was not around when I was on active duty so I cannot say what to expect. But after you get the training completed, keep up with it and continue to learn. See who closely your course content lines up with any certifications, take them while the content is fresh in our brain. There are lots of free resources out there to take advantage of. Look for local user groups on Meetup.com and Eventbrite. Here in Jacksonville, FL there are tons of meetup groups that meet monthly on all types of IT related fields. I belong to a few here, SQL Server, Microsoft developer group, IT Pro Server group, and a Java JS Node group.

Lots of long boring classes that do little to train you lol. You’ll learn your job at your unit. FYI you’ll be a 25S/25Q/25U/25B. Or at least I was.

It depends on your unit. My first couple units I only worked with radios in the s6. My last unit I was an admin and fixed common computer issues and re-imaged computers. I know some people in other units that work with servers and do more network related tasks. It all depends on your unit, policies of echelons above (s or g shops), or the base policies (we have a civilian led NEC that controls the network). I've only been at battalion or brigade level but have worked with company level from the bn s6 perspective.

The 25B series use to be 74B/C series. This MOS can set you up to work for large enterprise government contracting companies such as Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon and many others. During your reclassification you will be exposed to Network and Systems Administration. Where you will learn how to configure routers and switches. Picking up a Network Plus book along with a Security Plus book will prepare you for anything they throw at you. I learned all this from a YouTube channel called GIX911.
