My nearest post was kind of moribund and I devoted my time to the local VFW post, but then a new one opened nearby to combat a community group that was attempting to block an approved national cemetery, so I jumped in.

I belong to the American Legion but not to a post. I have belonged to a post in the past on several occasions but a few years ago I moved about 75 miles away from my old post and at the time there was not one here. There is one now but I haven't checked them out. Since moving I have been a national member but not affiliated with a post.

I do not go to my post for they allow smoking and I have brought it up but they don't care if it bothers some of us and it seams to me of a drinking club then anything

I am a Vice Commander this year, of Post 773 Millcreek PA. Excellent experience. Always a struggle to keep membership growing and to also keep the focus on doing good, instead of being a club where one can get a cheap drink.
