I am trying to find out how to re-class to a 40A, but am having trouble finding the correct first step. Would anyone be able to assist?

MAJ(P) Deoki (FA40 branch manager) is the guy that you want to speak with. Send any questions and I will try and give you an honest cut.

Thank you very much sir. I will definitely reach out to him. Some of the initial questions I have are:
Can reservists serve in FA40 positions?
Where are the units located (i.e. Cape Canaveral)?
What courses do you need to complete in order to re-class to a 40A? How long is the training?

Yes, you can serve as a reservist. The 2nd Space BN is a full reserve unit out of Colorado Springs.
Don’t quote me, but I think that is you are a ke to transfer to FA40 as a reservist, then they will get the training for you to become a space operator.

SOOQC, the transition course is like 8 weeks or so, but depending on which company you get assigned to, you may have to take some additional courses...all are present in Colorado Springs.

Adam, I just sent you an email which is one I send when anyone asks about being a FA40 (which happens pretty regularly). I see your original question was a little different. If you are active duty, you transfer into FA40 through the Voluntary Transfer Incentive Program which occurs twice a year. Watch for the MILPER messages. The MILPER for the most recent VTIP was MILPER 18-070. If you want more information on VTIP, HRC has an informational page at https://www.hrc.army.mil/content/Officers%20Voluntary%20Transfer%20Incentive%20Program%20VTIP Basically, your YG and basic branch have to be allowing officers out of the branch, and FA40 must be requesting officers (IN/OUT calls). You will submit a packet and compete to be accepted into FA40. Numbers of applicants and number of selectees vary greatly from VTIP to VTIP. My year there were 25 applicants and 5 were selected. Two VTIPs ago, we took 31, this last one, we took four. The most important thing you can do to position yourself for selection is to have very strong evaluations. The packet may be different now, but when I was going through the selection process it was a 4187 that I signed, an ORB, my last 5 OERs, and a MFR stating why I believed I was qualified for acceptance. I would not worry about not having a STEM degree, most of us don't. Please don't hesitate to reach out to me if you have any other questions.

CPT Smith,
Thank you for that. I just read your entire e-mail and reviewed the attachment. That was a lot of detail and extremely informative. I really appreciate your willingness to pass on your knowledge and experience. I am a Reservist, so from what I have gathered I would not go thru the VTIP to transfer process. Now that I have a good understanding of the schooling and courses needed my next question would be unit assignment. The PDF you sent was very informative, but I was uncertain which locations and positions were for USAR vs AD. I currently reside in Florida, so something on the east coast would be ideal. Are the only reserve positions at 1st Space BN in Colorado Springs?

Let me check on this. I had a reservist inquire about this a few months back, and I put them in touch with someone. Give me a few days.
