I am trying to reclass to 89D but I am being held up by retention because he is saying I will RCP. Anyone know more about this in detail?

I am promotable so i know that I have 10 years for RCP but I know i will make the next rank after school no problem. I have no problem on reenlisting for 89D but i have to wait for the reclassification process first right? My career counselor gave me two options "reenlist to go somewhere else to try to reclass there or try for a waiver but will most likely will get denied where I am at right now." This is holding me up from getting a class date.

You can expect that you'll need to reenlist 5 years for EOD. The school is about a year and you'll owe three years after graduating, plus the time till you start your training. Five years.
If you currently have more than five years in the Army then you will exceed your RCP. In order to reenlist past your RCP point you will need an RCP Exception to Policy. Your request will need a 4187 signed through your Brigade Commander.
Your Career Counselor is probably new. There is no waiver, waivers and ETPs are different. As long as your BDE CDR signs your 4187, and you're not something like an 8 year E4, HRC will grant the RCP ETP for an E4 going into a SMAPP MOS. Your 4187 needs to say you are requesting SMAPP as well. If they turn you away, go to the BDE Senior Career Counselor who has more experience in these situations.

Thank for your response. I might have been mistaken on the waiver part
My BDE career counselor is the one that is telling my that the ETP will most likely not get approved at this BDE. I am just stressed cause I dont have very good guidance on what to do or how it works.

SGT (Join to see) your BDE CDR is not the approval authority for an RCP ETP. HRC is the approval authority. Your BDE CDR just has to check "recommend approval" or "recommend disapproval". Your BDE CDR cannot refuse to sign and your BDE CDR cannot disapprove you. HRC will review your whole record and decide whether to not to grant your ETP.
Go tell your BDE Senior that you want to submit that request. If the BDE refuses to process it you have a valid IG complaint and you will get a signed 4187 back.

I believe the issue you are running into is the fact that you can not reclass into 89D with promotable status. From my understanding and I believe SFC (Join to see) can confirm this but I believe you can not be above E4 to reclass into 89D

As a SPC, you should not have allowed yourself to get anywhere close to RCP in the first place. Keep that in mind moving forward SGT (Join to see)

SSG (Join to see) yes i agree but not everyone can have a strong streak of luck. I say luck cause ever chance i get to advance something happens. Example I hurt my back, wife gets a brain tumor, finally go to BLC then points jump to 798. For the past 3 years I have been doing the duties of a NCO and last year a SSG in my MOS. On top of running a ammo section and dealing with my wife having a brain tumor. I have just completed BLC. I feel that getting close to RCP is not a factor because at the end of the day I know that my knowledge and leadership skills can not be givin a expiration date.
