So here are my details, I was an active duty MP from 2002-2005 then I came off of active duty and did one year in the Army NG and got out in 2006. Fast forward to this year and I'm at a place now where I wanted to go back to Active duty. Well being out so long and such, I didn't really want to go back to Basic just to have to reclass to another MOS. So I went to Guard route with the hopes that someday I may get to go back to AD as an MP but that looks pretty bleak given that the current business rules haven't changed since May. I am in the only Guard MP unit in my state, we are a law and order unit but there is basically zero room for promotion! Out of our Platoon size detachment, over half are E-4s! There is an Air NG unit close that has a security force element. I was curious if there is a possibly of my MOS transferring over to the Air NG and then eventually going Active in the Air Force? Thoughts? Experience?
I think it's wrong how hard it is to be prior service and not be able to come back in!

SPC,
WHat you're asking can be done. It will be tough though. Go see the Air Guard recruiter. They have to be willing to take you first. Then you need to apply for a release from the ARNG to ANG. After a year in the ANG you can apply to go Active Duty Air Force. Good luck to you.

Thank you so much for the information MSG Reeve! I have talked to an Air Guard recruiter and they told me that they only Security Forces unit available is a five and a half hour drive to go and drill because the unit that is only twenty minutes away is over strength. Weighing the options!

Well, if you really want it and can afford the drive, I recommend you go for it. I drive three hours to my unit sometimes multiple times per month. Chances are, after a year at that SecFor unit, you could transfer to the one closer. You could always move close to the unit depending on your job situation.

There is an Army National Guard unit in Alaska that is 100% active duty. It is A Company, 49th Missile Defense BN, Fort Greely, AK. Their job is to protect the missile site located there. It is a remote location and the winters are long and can be extremely cold. But it is active duty dual status Title 32 off site Title 10 on site only unit like it in the Army. They are always looking for new soldiers, if you can't live without the city life around you this can be a rough tour. If selected you have to pull a 3 year tour, then you can apply for other AGR positions in Alaska or other states.

That is great news, thank you CW4 Siers! I am ok without the city, I was raised on a five thousand acre cattle ranch in the middle of nowhere! It may be something worth looking in to, my parents live in AK!

I started out active Army, was an in-service recruit to the ARNG for 6 years, then transferred to the Air Guard in the same state. Still serving. Not sure how things work in your state, but in Florida, pretty simple to go from one service to the guard if you have an MOS that is a direct convert to one the guard has. I can tell you if you are an MP in the Army it will convert to the SF career field in the AF/Air Guard. If you are looking to get into the Air Guard, I would advise the following. Go talk to someone in the Air Guard unit you are looking to get into and see if they have any slots available, if they do, talk to the Air Guard recruiter. As long as your background check comes back clean you should be good to go. We have prior, Navy, Army and Coast Guard in my Air Guard unit as well as prior active duty AF. I just had a young man, cross train into Security Forces from a communications career field, finished tech school, took a temporary assignment at the wing as they needed SF personnel to help out at the Guard Base while their SF were deployed, he now is a full time SF employee in that Guard unit. Good luck.

Thank you for the information SMSgt Spencer! I truly want to make the military a career and just do not see that happening in the Army any time soon and I don't want to get stalled out on a promotion in a unit where there is just not the option.
