I have a 3kw generator that keeps frying battery charging regulators when I try to turn it on. Does anybody know why this is happening?

I have a 3kw generator that anytime we try to start fries the battery charging regulator and causing it to smoke and become an NMC part. I’ve never seen anything like this does anybody know what the issue could be?

Had this same issue few years back. It’s just a short somewhere. If I’m not mistaken the one I found was linked the the slav receptacle. Also check the ground on the back of the engine.

Get the ole multimeter and wiring diagram out and start checking for the issue. Seems like a short or a resistor that's not resisting.

The generator is probably TFU. Replace.

If you are a 91D, you should already know the process of troubleshooting why a generator isn't working properly. Pull the FM for the generator, and follow the troubleshooting steps. If you are not a 91D, you are not authorized to do anything about the 10 level maintenance, and should get it into the 3rd shop.

Is the generator power clean? Some generators put out noisy power with spikes and overvoltages.

Test the voltage regulator using the TM and check the polarity. I would suspect it is the voltage regulator has gone bad.

Also, the batteries for those 3k's are specific. Must be only a 24vdc battery.

Check your voltage coming out of the GEN, look at the TM and for the troubleshooting steps. Check all wringing on The charging circuit to ensure the are no bare wires exposed or shorted across the ground.

Make sure the J connectors are correct. Input and output are connected correctly.
