Yes, the Soldier still in the Army. However, a little bit of logic dictates otherwise. It's up to the commander. The issue at hand is that s/he still in the unit's books and counts towards the unit’s readiness statistics. But you could talk thru your NCO Support channel to get him/her off the hook and make him some sort of detail during the event. Like water boy?

Yes, however, there must be something more here, the soldier recently failed and is this a retest. In which case the unit has good reason. To ETS with full benefit one should have maintained military standard.

Yes. He is still in the military. Just because he is short, doesn't change the fact that we must fulfill our oath of enlistment. I don't know if there is an exception in the regulations, but he gave his word when he raised his right hand.

The Soldier should have already taken his final VA physical and is not authorized to take a PT test once that has been executed due to potential injury.

However, if he wants an ETS award I have seen Soldiers need to have a record test within 6 months of ETS award submission and many get into this issue

It seems illogical for any unit to levy such a requirement so I am sure there is more to the story. The Soldier should already be on PTDY and Terminal Leave anyways so there are some red flags here but every story is complexed and unique.

This Soldier should have already taken the exit(Army and VA) physical exam and the unit should have the Soldier annotated as a loss. The chain of command must keep in mind that of the Soldier is injured during the APFT and the Soldier chooses to pursue medical care this will push the Soldier past the ETS date. Unless things have changed this is reportable to BDE and DIV because now the unit has a non mission capable individual plus the individual is past the ETS date. My exit physical exams exempted me from taking an APFT and it was annotated in my out processing packet.

Does "the command" want him to take one, or someone between him and the command team? Ninety percent of the time when Soldiers say, "My chain of command said (insert asinine requirement)..." they really mean a team leader or squad leader, who either doesn't understand the Commanders intent, or doesn't want to bother to ask for an exception that makes good sense.

As your your question, yes they have to, and yes they can still he flagged, and that would affect their ability to join the RC and would give them an RE3 on their 214.

You won't find anything anywhere in writing that says no APFT within X number of days of ETS, because it's not a real thing. It's more of a custom and tradition. Even when I separated in 2000 the norm was no PT after your ETS physical. But you won't find that written as a rule anywhere.

Not wanting to take a PT Test is what's wrong with the New, Happy & Progressive Army. Doing exercise should not be used as punishment such as pushups in Basic Training. If I were the General of the Army, exercise would be fun events taken twice a day. The majority of the reaming time be dedicated to Soldier Skills. The PC bull shit would be 1% of the work day. Fitness is the most powerful personal weapon a warrior has. I did PT up until the last day I cleared. How long does it take to do a regular army PT Test? Hour-Two? On the other hand maybe it could be a gesture of running him on his way out.

Yes, he is still on the AA-162. He counts against the unit until he is officially out. It will also trigger an event in DTMS where a Soldier has lapsed. I am sure your command is trying to get up to 100% on DTMS and they is why. He still has to take a PT test. I have heard people say that you can't do PT after you do your final physical but it is not in any regulation that I have ever found.

Per AR 40-501 "There are no limitations placed upon Soldiers or commanders after a Phase 2 physical has been completed unless the Soldier has a profile with limitations that clearly and thoroughly outline those limitations. Soldiers are required to continue to participate in PT. In addition to PT, Soldiers can also continue to participate in unit training activities. The decision whether a Soldier participates, or does not participate in unit training activities, rests solely with the commander." Also After their Phase 2 physical, Soldiers are still required to be able to pass the Army Physical Fitness Test and meet the requirements of Army Regulation 600-9 until they are discharged from the Army.
and in accordance with AR 601-210, if a Soldier has not completed their eight-year total commitment, they are required to meet these standards even after leaving the active Army, since they can be recalled to active duty at any time within their period of obligation.

No, the Soldier is NOT required to take the PT test if they are within 179 days of ETSing. Here's why - 1.) The Soldier should have already cleared their outprocessing medical screening for disability evaluation. 2.) If the Soldier gets hurt during the PT test - then the Soldier will be retained on active duty on medical hold and convalescent leave until the injury has healed or been fixed, and then the Soldier must go through a medical evaluation process again - which may now qualify them for a medical retirement if they reach a disability evaluation of 30% or more.

Your command needs to stop being stupid - and focus on the Soldiers who are remaining in uniform and stop playing the hazing and harassment game with the Soldier who is leaving within days. I would also recommend this Soldier notify the IG about this issue, and file a Congressional complaint as it seems the command is just hazing and harassing them, and the Soldier should also get a profile to be exempt from the PT test. One thing is for certain, the Soldier does not have to take the PT test, but is also sounds like the command may want to use that as justification to give the Soldier a General Discharge or not give them an award for their service.

This is the reason the Army has a hard time keeping good Soldiers or recruiting now - word about this kind of ridiculous behavior by senior leaders gets out and it makes people think the Army is being ran by a Frat House Crew. If I were the O-6 or CG of this unit, I would fire the unit leaders for this kind of non-sense as they clearly are not focused on taking care of Soldiers, takong care of the mission, and ensuring those who have served are fully prepared to leave the Army when it comes their time to do so - either by end of service obligation or by retirement or by medical discharge or medical retirement.

I did a quick Google search and III Corps IG answered this question:

You aren't even required to get a medical exam if you're ETSing. And there is no regulation that says you can't do PT after your phase 2 physical for ETS. None. Unless someone can show it - your unit can make you take a PT test up to the day before your separation from the Army. Most units don't do stupid stuff like that though. I wouldn't have someone take a PT test who has 20 days left. It's a waste of time.

Why? He's gone in 20 days. Once he's had his final physical, he no longer has to do PT unless he wants to. He should be at 1st formation for accountability and after that his focus should be on finaling out and looking employment elsewhere. Sounds like soldier harassment to me. Reading the other comments posted, it looks like the senior NCOs have already answered this question well. I've experienced this too many times during my time in service, being one of the NCOs tasked to grade or record the soldier. I'd remind my leadership that with (insert soldier's name and rank here) being listed as an upcoming loss to the unit that their score will not count towards the unit average and that the soldier's PCS/ETS date could be pushed back if the soldier gets hurt during the APFT...which would end up costing the Army more money. This is the kind of thing that is what I call an easy win for the command. Don't force a soon-to-ETS soldier to do an APFT/ACFT as they are leaving. They already have enough to deal with getting their affairs in order so they can get back to Fort Couch. Thinking back on my ETS/Retirement. I had alot to get done so my family could making back home. As an NCO I wouldn't and have talked to my 1SG and CO about why this is unnecessary and a waste of resources and time for the command. Put the solder on known losses and move on to more important tasks.

I had a PT test during my last two weeks with the rest of my battery in 1991. I passed but since I was leaving anyway I didn't put a lot of effort into it since I was basically in my own platoon anyway by then and had no incentive to blow it out of the water. Even when I do the test, many in the Battery disagreed and complained to the officers and sergeants who only shrugged.

The physical was the last thing I did. At the time, I was VERY SICK. I intended to separate, go home and find a cure and then re-up. The physical was basically the doctor saying to about 12 guys at sick call, give me your forms and I will just sign them all. It was that way at Ft. Dix too.

Unfortunately, I could not re-up. My family's doctor referred me to a Gastro-Intestinal doctor who diagnosed me during terminal leave with advanced Crohn's Disease and a colon that was about to burst. But now I have free care for that through the VA.

There's a part of the Oath of Enlistment, or it was anyway, when I was still on active duty, "......I will obey the orders of the officers appointed over me........". Army regs are out of my wheel house but if he has already taken his final physical he shouldn’t be on a PT test roster. If he gets injured it would put him into a position where he would potentially not have enough time to have it entered into his medical record. But unless you have someone who is a Boy Scout and a firm follower of the rules you will get a lot of flak by the “just shut up and do it” crowd.

After returning from Korea and reporting to my new duty station,the CO told me to go through the barracks and tell those that need a haircut to go get one. But I would probably have a terrible spill on the run and hurt myself to the point of being on medical hold (all faked of course). Before I retired, my 1sgt wanted me to take the PT test even though I was already out processing. He and I had bump heads quite a few times. So he lets the company know that I am taking the PT test. The day of the PT test I show up to take it. I have never failed a PT Test in my whole military career. So the first event is the sit ups. I get into position and sit up, I hold that position for 2 minutes and lay down. 1 sit up. The push up is the next event, I get into the start position, time begins, I hold the up position for 1 minute and 50 seconds, go down and come up. 1 push up and time. Time for the run, time starts, i place 1 foot in front of the other and continue for the 2 miles. 3 hrs 15 minutes later I cross the finish line. The company had to stay until the last person cross the finish line. The 1sg was pissed beyond believe, I explained that I was following his orders and doing the PT Test, however he never said I had to pass it. He tried to get me to redo the PT test but the SMG told him to let it go and learn from how he treated those under him.

I was medically discharged and my unit had me on the PT test list. I had a boot on. I looked at my Platoon Sergeant and then at my boot. And he looked back at me and said “yeah this is dumb” and walked away.

I had a commander that required a Soldier with less than 10 days to ETS to take an APFT. Why? The Soldier consistently scored 300+, and the commander wanted to pad his stats. I had a 1SG that hated two of my soldiers and he made it his lifes mission to ensure they ets without an award. I managed to sneak one through S1 and got an award for soldier NO1, I went on leave and while I was gone he put out my NO2 soldier without an award. He actually changed his ets to get him out before I returned. they were both smart, loyal and hard workers, they were not in compliance with weight(getting out soon made them eat the foods they missed). so what, they served their country and deserved and award. The 1SG was wrong. period...

That is a broad question. It depends on the situation. While I agree with most of the comments by the senior NCOs, which are spot on, there is always a possibility of a soldier who is trying to manipulate the system. However, if the soldier has been a good soldier without any issues, I don't see the point of making him do a PT test.

Technically, yes. My opinion is it is the Commander's best interest to let that one go. First of all, why do that to the Soldier, regardless of why he's ETSing? Second, if he fails, then what? What is the next step? Third, if he gets bare minimum out of spite, that will destroy some APFT stats across the board...unless you toss the 705 in the trash.

This is a stupid decision by the command. They can force him to take it but they should code him as a loss. They can’t stop his discharge for failing it but if the soldier decides to bomb it, the fail will go against the unit’s numbers and readiness report. This is stupidity and toxic leadership.

As a former Training NCO, I would look to see if he/she has a passed APFT/ACFT within the last year, if he/she does, let him leave without issue. But if he/she hasn't, you are required to chapter him/her as not meeting standard. If he/she decides to come back in, he/she would have to pass one in order to be accepted.
It might end up being a reduced discharge. (General under Honorable circumstances) and he/she would have a conditional entry code on their DD214.

It used to be 6 months prior to ETS, but there is no limit on regulation, now, that I know of. I met an NCO last fall who bragged that he gave a OR text to a soldier 30 days before ETS. When the kid failed, he was chartered and lost all of his benefits. I can't imagine a leader being proud of this!

If this soldier is Scheduled for ETS in 20 days then he is considered in "ETS" status and is not mandated for such test because he/she is considered as a loss to the unit. Although that soldier is accounted for by the unit until they sign out of the unit with PCS orders in hand, the soldier's wellness the responsibility of the unit but the PT test is only required for soldiers continuing and entering service.

Did the soldier complete his phase 2 physical.. if the answer is no then he should take it. DTMS doesnt discriminate, it doesnt take into account Soldiers on leave..it hurts the companies stats.. I personally have soldiers get up to date on all HR Metrics and training qual as best I can so when they go on PCS/Transition leave they dont sit red for 2 months. And APFT is the easiest PT you do all week.. if you have to study for it, your organization probably has not been conducting good physical fitness training.

He is a 'pending loss' within the 90 day window, especially if he has chosen not to re-enlist or is barred from re-enlisting. Although he can't refuse to take the APFT, he doesn't necessarily have to pass it. Of course, if the leadership is harassing the soldier, then a failure could result in counseling and flagging action. Just depends on how far they and the soldier want to push this.

Its either harassing or they're too stupid to know they don't need one from him. I actually had a doctor I worked with in this almost exact situation. He was enough of a smart-ass that he showed up, did 1 push up, 1 sit up and sat down just across the starting line for the 2-mile run, stood up, said "okay, thanks" and went about his day of getting out of the Army. He got out, went to a surgical residency and he is much happier. How do you think that failed PT test affected him or his final OER...?

Dont know about the Army, but in the USMC, you may be directed to take a pt test at any time. However, you cannot be made to take it for score. But if you fail it does mean you are under evaluation for being put on a pt program.
However, if a Commander did this with that close to an EAS, it would likely result in a request mast and the PC getting in trouble.

Waaaaay back in 1985, we had a Soldier that was due to ETS in about a month. There was a scheduled PT test. He barely passed the push ups and sit ups. Fine.
During the run, he grabbed a cup of coffee and took a break. He was given the option to go on remedial PT and get flagged as he ETS'd or take it again the next day and pass it. He took it again and passed.
My question though, was this a scheduled event or did someone just decide to mess with the Soldier?

Debatable, BUT. If that person is even remotely considering some follow on career in the Reserves or Guard, I would highly recommend they perform it. It cant hurt to have a final passing PFT on the books. Just my .02 When I got back in, I had to jump through giant hoops to get back in because I poo-pooed some things when I left active that would have made the transition easier. Hindsight is 20/20...

The majority of the folks here are correct: command is screwing with him.

Assuming he actually is a dirtbag, if he hasn't been bad enough to give a disconnected or even general discharge, he's met his enlistment requirements and you need to ask the readiness NCO to back off.

Also, who knows, maybe the soldier will learn from your example of going to bat for him and become a better citizen as a civilian.

While unsure of what policy is, it would seem to me, that this is a case of pettiness or harrassment.
When I only had 4 weeks left in the Corps, I had my discharge physical. At that point, the company 1st Sgt decided he wanted to take the unit on a 26 mile hike with pack and 782 gear. I simply let him know that it wasn't going to happen as my discharge physical was completed and I would not participate. His response was petty. "If you were a good NCO, you'd be marching with your troops."
My response was simple, "If I was a good NCO, I would have been promoted to SSgt."
Best of luck to you Sgt G. Hopefully you have made good friends while serving. And, hopefully, your brothers in arms will remember that the politics that causes many great soldiers, marines, sailors and airmen leave the service is not the end all and be all.

In Germany, we had a guy that was ETSing and Top made him take his final PT test. He had been known to do 100 pushups, 100 situps and 10-2 miles. He just told them 10, 10 and 20 meaning 10 pushups, 10 situps and 20 minute 2 miles. He did just that. He even smoked a cigarette while running the 2 miles.

Of course the commander is going to require it. That's the commander's job/discretion. In good faith, even though the SM is getting out, should take the APFT. If the CO wanted to make it worse, he/she could pursue UCMJ action and delay SM's ETS.

In the short term, he could face UCMJ if he refuses to do it, regardless of whether the test is lawful. But this sounds like harassment; I cannot think of a single good reason for his participation. He should have had his physical by then. If he is injured, his ETS date could change. And in the bigger picture, he could go to the VA in three weeks and report a major injury and say it happened due to command harassing him by forcing participation in a PT test conducted after his ETS physical. Think of the can of worms THAT would open. I would tell him to take test, but privately imply to him that a Smart Sapper would do as little on that test and any possible PT sessions as he thought wise.

The bottom line is the unit is going to do what ever they can get away with. If a challenge is presented then plans change miraculously. You as soldiers leader should be fighting to allow soldier ample time not having to deam with this b.s. if need be take the hit. As I was ready to retire, I rejected the Air Force desire to give me a 10% disability. I was looking forward to entering the private sector and stare a civilian career. That worked for me real well for more than 10 years, then I had a heart attack and required medication on a daily basis. Not a problem initially, and then I deployed to Miami for Hurricane Andrew. I ran short of medication and visited the VA to see if I could refill my medication. They could not find me in their records, but did check me out and provided me with a two week supply. After that, my local VA in Atlanta asked me to come in for a check-up. They found that I was suffering from type II diabetes, caused by Agent Orange and granted me a 40% disability. I asked them about the heart attack, and they said that Agent Orange had nothing to do with that. By that time, I had already suffered, or survived three heart attacks. A young Solider, suffering with the same condition I had with my heart, challenged the VA's finding and won his case. The VA called me in based on the legal finding and reviewed my history and decided to grant me 100% disability. However they were only willing to go back to my first visit, some 10+ years to pay me the disability pay. I loss more than 10 years of pay. I say all of this to suggest, if the military want to check you out before leaving, accept it. Get it on record, it may pay off in the future. Just an old man's view.

Does your commander, Battalion or Brigade know this is being required by a company commander, current DA level orders have waived the APFT from 1 October because of the new APFT transition. Current test is good through 1 OCT 2021(FY). There is no regulation, however, that exempts a Soldier from ANY PT or test until they sign out regardless of ETS/Ret physical complete.

When I was a Squad Leader(SSG/E6) I had a Soldier to complete his phase 2 physical exam for separation from the military. On all official documentation he is a loss and a Soldier has been requisitioned to take his place. At PT formation we began to conduct warmups and this Soldier, while jogging in place, steps on his keys and we all could hear the Pop. The Soldier broke his foot stepping on the keys. Fast forward. 9AM I am explaining to the Company Commander and 1SG what happened and why the Soldier was participating in PT after having completed the phase 2 of his separation physical exam. Because the Soldier was close to getting out of the Army all communication was face to face all the way to 18th ABN Corps HQ. I forgot to mention that I was in the 101st Chemical Company on Fort Bragg. Before the day was over, it was explained to me in great detail, that the military will have to pay the Soldier beyond is ETS date because the Soldier has to be extended for medical reasons. The Soldier will receive medical care until he is fit to leave the military. And I was told that I should have used common sense and have the profile PT instructor to take charge of the Soldier. For the remainder of my career I never made that mistake again while educating the NCOs on my team. Many years ago I had a SGM to tell me that there is a fine line between being hard and being stupid. You decide which side of that line to be on.

I would say it is strange that the command would require this Soldier to take a PT. What is going to be the benefit. Do they require all Soldiers that are ETSing to take a PT no matter how many days they have left in the Army? As the Soldier leader, why do you think they have taken so much interest in your Soldier? Have you pointed out to the command that the Soldier is ETSing in less than 20 days? The test could really be for you to see if you are willing to speak up for your Soldiers when you know what is been asked of them doesn't make sense.

Hopefully the command comes to their senses and let the Soldier ETS in peace.

Unnecessary. As a CW3 approaching retirement (2-month out and a test less than one year old), my company commander thought I too should take the test. While initially demuring, I cheerfully said 'sure sir, I'll take the test.' Told him I'd do one push-up, one set-up and stroll around the track. He was taken back and said 'but Chief, you'll fail.' I acknowledged he was right. When he realized I'd be a PT failure reported to the battalion commander, and that the BC's first question 'what were you thinking,' he thought twice about my test.

I have seen ships/stations REQUIRE that the person take the PT as part of their CHECKOUT to leave! Not necessarily as PASS/FAIL but I have seen commands do it, remember you have to be FIT enough to discharged.... My last active duty ship I missed the PT due to the ship getting underway and my ETS being three days later while they were out, the command had a PT test the day after they got back (changed on the schedule due to underway period).

What kind of foolishness is this! if the soldier intends to leave the military and head to the transitional point in 20 days and a wake-up, he does not need any "Dam" PT Test. I've never heard of something so stupid in my life, maybe that Dizzy Cdr. needs to do the PT Test himself, and let's see how he would fare out on that one. The soldier can opt out of that foolishness if he wants to, I know that I would. And don't let that stupid commander starts harassing him with article 15 action. If this be the case and they try to hold him beyond his ETS date for this stupid action, he's going to have to answer to a higher power within the Chain of Command. The solider does have the option to seek counseling from the Inspector General's Office (IG). It sounds like this Cdr. needs to really get a life, and find something more constructive to do within his company, like focusing on the rest of the soldiers to ensure that they are in the readiness mode for anything that may come down through the Chain of Command within a moments notice.

He should do it!! One it's an order. 2 If he has any physical problems it will be noted then if he ever needs a claim he has proof of it. So many do not and therefore suffer with pain and loss. For instance my last PT's I walked in the time frame I could not run. But some idiot recorded it as I ran. My knees swelled up I suffered many years. Went to VA when I got out 1982 they turned me away. I never went back until 2005 when unit had a reunion. VA would say I only had back injury in service what does the knees have to do with that. 5 years later after many appeals.
So do it and make sure it is filled in correctly if he can not then he has proof.

One month before I retired, I took the AFRT just like everyone else in my unit. I was the Center and Bn's Operations Sergeant (E9 Billet). I was in physical therapy and could have wimped out. I chose to, instead, be an example for the rest of the soldiers in the command. I maxed the test and had no physical problems afterwards. In my case, it was always leadership by example. Does a soldier have to take the test when they have a very short period of service time remaining? I would like to think that they would as one of their last "hurrahs" but then, not all short timers have ever been dedicated.

I was made to do one like 2 weeks before ETS as well and I, being the lemming that I am, just went with it. I really went for it and scored in the 290s. Yes it is required to do an exit PT test. That way if the soldier decides to enlist into a different branch, or the same branch, the unit commander has some data on he/she physical condition at the time of separation. Also may help the SM in filing a claim with the VA as well.

No he / she does not have to take it. But it would behoove of him / her to take and pass the PT test. Why I say this. Lets jump to the future. If this soldier decides to reenlist later in the Army or any other service. The recruiter will look into his / her past record. By taking and passing the PT Test will give him / her a favorable reenlistment & spin code. If he / her don't take it or don't pass can give the person a unfavorable reenlistment / spin code that would be frowned upon by recruiters. We don't know what the future holds but doesn't hurt to prepare for it in a positive way to be a success. Oh! a footnote, employers will look at ones military career past.

No. Under 30 days he is a loss. Any injury in this 30 days the Branco of service is responsible for and the chain of command should be held accountable. Unless the service member is in a critical shortage slot and placed on stop loss, then they would be involuntary extended but, that would be a rare circumstance.

Too many commanders view separation in a negative light. My last battalion commander threw my Meritorious Service Medal (retirement award) in the circular file. Never got it. He was mad because I had a P3 profile (all service connected) and couldn't pad his APFT numbers and my retirement "hurt his numbers"; I just wanted to "get out of the way". These service members have honorably fulfilled their contracts; I don't understand them being harassed. Had the SM in question been injured and medically extended, I imagine they would have made his life hell i.e. CQ/Staff Duty Runner 24 on/ 24 off. Some commanders wonder why nobody wants to reenlist. I was fortunate when I ETSed from active duty on 30NOV90 in that I was left alone, other than only getting 5 days to clear.

They tried the same thing with me. I was being released with an Honorable discharge. I got down, did one push up and got back up. I did one sit up and got back up. I walked instead of ran. They could not say anything, what were they going to do, threaten to kick me out. They had already barred me to re-enlistment because I was over weight. I did that on purpose too. They always threatened to kick me out, so I forced them to do it. I was even called into my CO's office and was told that I had to sign paperwork. It was my discharge for being over weight. I signed it and handed it back to him. He asked, do you know what this is, I said yes I do, sir. He tore it up right there and said get the hell out of my office. When I came up for orders to be transferred, I refused to extend or re-enlist. I was barred from re-enlisting. JAG told me that the Army had broken the contract. I got out 6 months early with my honorable discharge. I finished my career by going to work for the Post Office when I got out. Better pay and less stress.

I was the PRT Coordinator for 6 years. It is a yearly thing not a random, we think we will make a person take a Test thing. There are rules to follow! Have the person lookup the Regs for the ARMY and ask for an Audience with the CO, only after speaking to Base Legal. This seems to be a way to give a less than honorable discharge if the person is overweight or out of specs. They can falsify the result easily!!! A tape measure can be held tight or loose to skew the results. Be very Careful!!!

The soldier has to follow a lawful order and take the test if that is what they're asked to do, but they could fail every event and it wouldn't matter. I can't believe the 1SG is allowing this to occur in the first place unless they're enforcing it. Even if this is the case, the command team knows it has no bearing on the unit's stats. If this soldier was handling their business they would be on terminal leave right now and not worried about a John Brown PT test. Just my thoughts on the situation. CSM Satterly is spot on with the harassment.

When a soldier has completed his exit/VA physical, he no longer participated in PT due to the liability that the military could incur were he to be injured. At this point, PT formation is strictly for accountability for him. Any good Unit would have this soldier continually working to out process and prepare for life after the Army.

It all depends. Did he pass he his last pt test? If not to close his tour, remember all military personnel have an 8 year obligation, the command may want to ensure his transition to IRR and be current. If he passed and it is within 6-months then he is being harassed!

I would say if he is a squared away soldier and can pass the PT test what does he have to lose by giving them one more? On the other hand if they are looking for a reason to muddy him up before he goes because he is not squared away I think that's a totally different story. I gave a PT test 3 days before I went on transitional leave, it didn't bother me a bit, I maxed it and didn't think anything of it. You'll have to let us know the outcome.

There is no need for a PT test since he is about to ETS and i assure you there is no directive mandating any command to direct anyone to take a PT test in order to ETS. From my perspective they are just harassing him and TARGETING him which is a violation under EEOC and he should go file a complaint on his command or whoever is telling him he has to take a PT test to ETS which is PURE BULLSHIT!!! Now another option is get ahold of his Congressman from the District of his Record of his hometown and file a Constituent Complaint against his command and he should do this immediately because common sense tells me they want him to turn down that directive so they can kick him out or bust him down to nothing. One of the 40 series medical regulations says physical training is not recommended after a final medical evaluation(not verbatim but I had to look it up). That’s the black and white the guidance. My 1SG made all soldiers participate until the last day. As to whether it makes sense to administer a pt test afterward, I’ll leave that subject alone.

The soldier could fail the test but would face consequences. I would suggest he talk with his 1st sergeant or SGM. If that proves a waste of time contact IG and congressman as he has a target on his back and the unit is definitely targeting him. Of course he could do his last 20 days in compliance and fail to est on date and unit will suffer the consequences. He will need unit for references and such so best to play nice and do the 20 days.

That's a hard no. If it were me, and I only had 20 days left, and I was 100% not going to re-up, I'd tell them I'm not taking a chance of injuring myself for the civilian workforce just to appease their wants. It's not their future, and when the soldier is out they won't care about them.

It is the Commander's discretion. Even if the Soldier has finished his or hers VA physical. If the Soldier gets injured, they can add the injury to their claim. This happened to me and I was retiring.

Let’s analyze this comment. “The command” is this the work of an overzealous CPL or an inexperienced young Sergeant? Yes, there are some Captains out there that may not know all policies or procedures, but every Captain there is a First Sergeant. No, the command is completely wrong, because the command should know that a Soldier should not be involved in any training that can cause an injury after the final physical. All commanders goes through a Command Training along with their 1SG. Further more this Soldier does not even count for the total number of taking the APFT (APFT. sorry I know it’s different now). He is a loss and therefore doesn’t count for an average.
I read all comments in this blog, and glad to hear that are people out there that try to preserve a good image of our Armed Forces while other trying hard to smear it. For all my brothers and sisters thank you, makes me proud to see after 30 years of Service.

(S)he is still in the military and must follow all legal orders including the PT test. When I got out my PLT SGT ordered me to do the PT test the morning of my Phase 2 (ETS) physical. It was a lawful order so I did it. I did 10 push ups, 10 situps, and the spent 2 hours walking. After that I went to my physical. So, yes, you can be ordered to do it up until you have your DD-214 in hand.

Yes, he has to do it; however, pass it, I doubt it. RECOMMEND leave time or appointments which prevent testing during the next 20 days. If he/she fails, are they going to extend him/her? NO. But, if there is a failure to follow an order, that can result in bigger issues.

I seen this happen one time when I was in the USMC, both Marines had under a month left to do before getting out, If I remember right the standard for the 3 mile run was something like 30-32 minutes long story short about 45 minutes later those two came skipping across the finish line and I do mean skipping .

Evidently, the commander does not know the military regulations in reference to a soldier ETSing from the military. With only 20 days left, he should be given that time for preparing to take care of business for out processing. Usually they give the soldier 15 working days for out-processing not counting the weekends. Never heard of such a thing unless the CO had a problem with that soldier!!

Never pressure someone who is a genius or gifted at their skill/craft. I'm guessing your soldier irritated someone in the command who's more vengeful than smart (couldn't POSSIBLY be a commissioned US Army officer, righ?), because, as several of the fine super lifers have already pointed out, your soldier has already taken his exit physical and any injury that might occur is going to mess up a whole lot of paperwork AND put Uncle Sugar on the hook for some sweet medical retirement. Perhaps there's a young LT who needs coaching in Operational Risk Management.

On the other hand, if your soldier would like to retire early, maybe breaking his leg on the PT test is exactly the lesson your command needs. I mean, accidents happen.

That's a big negative. If the Soldier has already taken an exit physical then they are exempt from PT and any APFT. Pretty much like everyone has said if they wind up getting hurt then the process starts all over again and they are kept past their ETS date. Sounds like someone has it out for your Soldier in my opinion.

If I am correct he still has to fulfill his duties up until the very last day. So yes, he does need to pass the test. otherwise it goes on his record that he failed the pt test. It will reflect on any federal job he may try to obtain in the future. When my husband refused to re-enlist. His company turned on him in a bad way. He was forced to take a pt test, go our into the field and was not allowed to take his terminal leave until he had completed all of that. They were good to him until he refused to re-enlist. Then they became vindictive to him. I would just do it and be done with it.

We had just gotten back from Desert Storm a couple of months earlier when a man in my unit failed a PT test. It didn't seem to matter that he was going to ETS in less than 2 months. He was counseled about it and ordered to do remedial PT for 30 days. It might not have been his smartest move but he blew it off. Anyway, he got busted from E4 to PFC for disobeying a lawful order. I just didn't see a point in going through all that when the man was getting out anyway.

Here’s the thing, there is absolutely no regulation that states you are are exempted from taking a semi-annual APFT at any point up to the day before your ETS date, or the day prior to your terminal leave start date. I was told in 7 out of 8 years that as long as I had my ETS physical I would be exempted from any further PT or APFTs to avoid any injuries. Needless to say I ETS’d and less than 2 months from my terminal leave start date (about 3 months from ETS in total), I was tagged for an APFT. I had obviously completed my ETS physical months prior and thought I was golden. I went digging to find this somewhere in regulation and checked as many reference sites as possible. Unfortunately I came upon the fact that, no matter the common misconception, there is absolutely no reg supporting the rumor. I gathered that, pretty much, until you have a final copy of your dd-214 you are expected to meet the standards.

Regardless of the ETS date, a soldier (officer and/or enlisted) has to obey orders. I am a retired officer and had to take a PT test within two weeks of retiring, simply because it was required by regulation.

A few months ago, I had to give a retiring SFC a PT test IOT for him to receive his Retirement award. It came down from CG who wouldn't approve his MSM without current APFT. He was clearing and was within 7 days of his retirement ceremony. He took the APFT and passed and he was good sport about it. He could of refused but likely would have had award downgraded at Installation level

Sounds like Harassment, Some units Turn on a soldier when they Prepare to ETS. We should thank them for their Service and Help them to make a great transition. Not Every one came in for 20 years, Some had goals to serve one or two enlistment. I have had Soldiers to Change their mind when I would support them Either way. I have been retired for several years now and still have soldiers calling me to advise them. He no longer counts on the books,Give him his time and mentor him in the transition. No one stays in the service for ever ETS or Retire we all will transition one day. Not every one steps up to serve Take care of the ones who did.

CSM, SGM, and 1SG are exactly correct in practice and arguably in common sense but I’ve never that in the regs. I don’t see a reason for the unit/CDR to make a big deal about it. I don’t see any harassment but again can’t refute it. SGT I think you at most ask your 1SG or PSG... it’s there fight. Present the issues but don’t get your “ass in sling”. Would I make him do it NO but then again I led a unit run the morning of my retirement. I applaud you for taking care of your Joe!

Does the Soldier have to take it? yes, he is still on active duty. If he/she served less than 8 years, they will remain in the military (IRR) until their full obligation is finished. Do they have to pass it? No. Anybody who fails the APFT is given time to take it again, but the time he can take it again, they will be out. Tell your Soldier to schedule the APFT the day before they leave, take your time forwarding the information. It looks like to me, that someone is simply being silly.

I had this same thing happen to me, when I retired and had completed my VA disability final claim a new SGM wanted me to go to the range and do a APFT the week before my final day, told him I'd do it but handed him the paperwork stating that if I got hurt it would be on him to cover any new injuries I incurred, I was walking with a cane and had a P3 profile at the time. Crap like that always frustrated me. Some think they just have to act the fool with soldiers as they are getting ready to ETS or retire. When really they are messing with one of their best recruiting tools. That are out there not costing any money from Recruiting Commands budget.

Was etsing back in the day and I had to under go the battalion skills.testing , they were oike y still.gotta do it even though you start clearing the next day to ets. Needless to say a flunked it as what were they gonna do to me?

This sounds like a normal "expiration term of service" and whether he is liked by his command, or not, he cared enough to sign above the proverbial dotted line and do his bit. The option should be his. In the grand scheme of things, his final PT test will have no bearing at all in his life. (I once ran two miles in 9:58, when I was stationed in Germany, back in the early 1980s, it has had zero effect where my military background is concerned.) His separation type/code is the only thing that matters. If he does not want to do the PT test, then he should just go on sick call, on the day of his PT. Since he is a loss to his unit, again, whether he does the test or not has very little bearing on the unit numbers. If the intent is to mess with the soldier, I would again keep in mind that he signed-up at a time when very few people seem to step-up to serve our nation. Why mess with him, and potentially "harm" his future with a separation code that reads anything but honorable?...

He's still a soldier. Of course he had to do it if ordered to do so. They can not extend his ETS date for failure to pass a PT test. As to why they would do this to someone so short, I have no idea. He could be excused from the test for the rest of his unit, but maybe they just don't want anyone to skip the test. maybe he is just dealing with a real dick. I have noticed that you might occasionally run into one of those in the Army. LOL!

Your commander is putting his career on the line for what? Should the soldier pass all is good. Should the soldier fail then it gets reported and everyone gets to ask why he was tested in the first place. Should the soldier become injured then everyone gets to question his judgement. I watched a CSM get relieved because he caused further injury to a soldier in a wheelchair. He made the soldier perform PT the day he was to sign out. The soldier had to be retained and reevaluated. The CSM was relieved the next day. So I ask again why is your commander placing his career in jeopardy?

I had a very similar experience. I was told that I couldn’t retire till I passed an APFT. I was on a walking profile at the time. I took the test passed the test and was told it was not a record APFT because I was on profile. To this day I have no logical reason for taking an APFT 30 days before I started leave for retirement.

Hell no. He should start clearing post in a week, what the hell is a PT test gonna do? They can't keep him from leaving if he doesn't pass it, additionally if he gets hurt how is that gonna help. Tell your command to get a clue.

He shouldn't be taking an APFT at this point. Do yourself some research, find it in the appropriate regulation and present facts as written to your NCO support channel.

I can only say that for a year after putting in my retirement papers I was not required to PT, I did but wasn't required to.

But I think irs best for him/her to take the Pt test and past, however, later join the guard or reserves with good standing while serving active duty! But if he/she has a medical problem, take the test document and after ETS if theres an injury file a va claim related to the injury!

Part 1 and 2 already taken? If they have been, then Command is in the WRONG to make a PT test happen. They need to read up on the AR's. After Part 2-you are a LOSS and that COC is a brain dead group. Sounds like a few idiots in 2/43 ADA in 2009. They tried that crap on a few that had Part 2 c complete and CSM took them to his office quicker than a Shawn Michael's Super Kick took Marty Janetti to the ground.

Someone has failed to do the risk assessment on this. Your Unit Admin is going to be pissed if this soldier gets hurt during the PT test. The LOD paperwork will be a pain in the behind, depending on the severity of the injury your higher headquarters is going to get involved. There is nothing that can be done to the soldier of real significance if they fail the PT test that close to ETS. A PT FLAG is a transferable FLAG, it does not trigger an undesirable reenlistment code. A soldier getting hurt that close to ETS could result in a bad evaluation for someone for a supervisor or Commander.
If this is a NG or Reserve unit this soldier if hurt seriously could end up voluntarily extending their contract and receiving fulltime pay and allowances while waiting for their injuries to heal, (or after a year the IDES process kicks in then about another 12 to 16 months.) It is a bad idea to mess with soldiers about to ETS "to prove a point" it can cost the "point prover" their career.

I experienced the same situation twenty years ago. So, I did one pushup, one situp, and walked the two mile run in an hour. I had a terribly ate up COC and worked for an alcoholic section Sergeant who hated me with a passion. Being glad to get out of that gagglef*** of a unit was an understatement. After that, I told young people to stay away from the military because they screw you on your way out the door. Being in that unit was a horrific experience and was the very definition of toxic!

Always with the dck head command desk jockeys that have nothing better to do. They want the easy way out so that they don't have to write out paperwork telling them why this or that. It is simple he or she has 20 f n days to stop being a blue falcon pos cheesedck. It is always someone with rank too, they need their resume plumped up so the more positive "numbers" the fluffier it gets.
Those aholes pulled that crap on me when I was Med boarding and then came the height and weight. They were scheming trying to get me out on a technicality but my lawyer told me that they can f off with their childish rank pulling bs. He said I was 90% out the door and they can file all the chapter paperwork they want. That paperwork was on the commander's desk faster than anything I had ever seen done in my whole career. I mean financial paperwork nope, leave paperwork nope, off base housing paperwork nope.....but he didn't pass height and weight ah hell Nah "how we got him" type bs.
The joke was on them because not only did their paperwork go nowhere I came back with reenlistment paperwork because my case wasn't done and you should have seen the coc flip out.
He pulled rank and said he wasn't signing anything that will extend me. So I mentioned this to the lawyer, boom, I had that reenlistment paperwork signed by cob.
F your rank anyone one of you if you abuse it and act like your s don't stink. So no chapter got extended 3 more months and egg in his whole face for pulling rank on me when all I was trying to do was leave and be out of everyone's hair but they had a bullseye on my back.
You see I was a 4-time spec 4 and proud of it. I knew my sht and they knew I knew my sht, in the rear with the gear is not me I was a boot on the ground put me in the field and I will shine type soldier. You can miss me with that dog and pony bullsht.
I passed that bs test too btw, it was the broke dck test but I passed. I did my action on the field not in garrison. Chain of command was soup sammich and football bat ways of leading, not all but most.
I am glad to be out and not dealing with aholes with rank. Good riddance.....
So if he has 20 days I would talk with someone other than that coc I would talk to a lawyer about it that way no one can hem you up.
