I have a Specialist that just came into the Army. He was prior Marine. Does prior service count?

I have a Specialist that just came into the Army. He was prior Marine. Does his prior service count towards TIS for primary or secondary zone for promotion to Sergeant? I am having trouble finding the answer in the regs.

The answer depends on how long the break in service is and it's found in 350-1

He will need a 1506 for a computation of service to get his TIS and get his promotion orders to S-1 to see if you can get his DOR fixed.

Ordinarily a retread and his recruiter file to the headquarters of the service he is enlisting in and they, Headquarters after reviewing his prior military records will make the determination of what rank he will start at in his new service.

I was in the same situation. A 1506 will fix his TIS, however he date of rank will be his first day of army active service. If TIS is incorrect his pay is incorrect as well because the 1506 fixed both.

As far as I can find, you should never lose TIS. Now TIG is different, even if they let him keep E4, his TIG would generally reset to his enlistment day.

His prior service does count. I went to Tech School with an individual that had completed a hitch with the Marines, therefore he out ranked many of the tech school students, he was authorized to wear with the ribbons he earned as a Marine.

Ok I'm a prior service Marine. My TIS DOES count. TIG did start over from the time I joined the Army. But you have to make sure the PS guy has all of his paperwork to take to schwaun (S1) to make sure everything is right. He is also authorized wear of any and all awards he received from the USMC. Hopefully this helps some.

It use to count only for service time towards retirement.

When I was out of service for 2yrs it still counted when I came back in and again when I was out for 2yrs it counted for when I joined national guard

Yes. His or her PEBD will need to be adjusted in order to reflect the USMC times. However, this Soldier will need to provide documents such as prior contract (DD 4) or DD 214.

Time in service counts. Time in grade is reset.
