I have always wanted to be a ranger... but I made the big mistake of joining the national guard. Do I still have a chance to go active duty with an option 40 to go to RASP?

You can received a conditional release from the National Guard in order to be recruited on to active duty. However, if you received a bonus you may have to pay that back. I was in the National Guard and conditionally released to active duty as well

Thank you sergeant. I didn’t receive a bonus. All I want is to have an option 40 and go to ranger battalion

Good luck. Talk to your local recruiter, they will give you a conditional release to get signed by your unit.

Whether you can go to Ranger school from the National Guard depends upon your state. For example, in my class we had a guy from the Minnesota National Guard. There is a cost involved in sending you to school, which is a common reason why some states will not allow their soldiers to attend. There are also fewer slots available.

With respect to going to regiment, there are lots of opportunities to go there as well. If you haven't been to Airborne School yet, you'll need to do that first and the Regiment commonly sends recruiters there. If you want more specifics I would recommend calling or emailing their in-house recruiters. http://www.benning.army.mil/tenant/75thRanger/Recruiting.html

The Regiments recruiters can't give you an Option 40 contract. Sorry, I should have been more specific. My comments relate to joining Regiment after you are already on active duty. As a PFC you would need to be able to attend RASP 1. The regiments recruiters are looking for candidates for RASP, as opposed to giving out Option 40 contracts. Once you get into RASP it's all on you. No contract will guarantee you a slot in the Regiment. If you perform to standards at RASP, you're in. If not, you'll be sent needs-of-the-army.
