I have Drill Sergeant duty at Ft Benning, is on-post housing worth it or should I go off-post?

I have 3 dependents and I want to live in Patton village because it is literally like 5 minutes from work. Worth it?

I have a good buddy who was there as a DS and his quarters were ok. It's a trade-off. Close to work or closer to other things to do off post.

I would do it in a heart beat! The houses there are nice and in great condition and given the hours you'll be working you can't beat saving every minute you can get. When I was a drill, they didn't have housing on post available, so I made the critical error of getting a house, 30 minutes away, and man did I pay for it. I cost me an hour a day and when your days are already as long as they are, that's huge. Trust me on this one, take the closest housing you can get every time!

SSG Johnson, I have a old squad leader of mine down there right now and he said to live on post. Just like 1SG said you want to be close, and living off post makes it a pain to get on post in the mornings and leave. Plus you are going to lose that time in transit. I'm living on post for sure.

I am currently serving as a DS at fort benning right now. I live in Patton village and it is a great feeling getting off work with the late hours and having a 5 min ride home. You also get that little extra time in the morning as well. Patton village has well maintained houses minus some of the backyards closer to the woods side, but the parks on every other street make up for that and there are great amenities such a pool, splash park, game room and workout center.

Definatley! I have been on the trail almost two years and the hours you will work will be long. You want a house close by.

I came from Benning last year. You will get into Patton village because you are a SSG. If you already have orders, call Fort Benning housing at [login to see] to get on the waiting list. You can request what housing division you want to stay in so once you arrive, your house will be ready. Once you call them, you have to upload a copy of your orders to reserve the space. I hope this helps.

I did 2.5 years as a DS on Sand Hill. The housing on post is nice and your hours are going to suck. I lived in Phenix City and it took me about 20 min to get to work, but I enjoyed living off-post. It really depends on if you like living on-post. Fort Irwin is the only time I lived on-post, but that’s because there isn’t really a choice.

I did drill at Benning. On post equals more time at home and not having to lose the valuable 30 minutes- hour driving home off post. I loved off post and it was nice but I hated driving home after the 16 hour long days during red phase
