I have my DD 214, but is it possible to get a proof-of-service card?

Thanks for this information! The DD214 will suffice for any needs I have, but a card would be more handy. For example, at the gate in Dollywood, they offered a big discount for vets, and I did not have a copy of my DD214 with me. The lady was gracious enough to take my word for it, but most people won't do that.

This was just a topic of discussion here a few weeks ago... with the OP calling for just this thing, and many of us (ignorantly i might add) not knowing the very thing being asked for already existed. what the law is not clear on is... who issues this card?

it says :
"‘‘§ 5706. Veterans identification card
‘‘(a) IN GENERAL.—The Secretary of Veterans Affairs shall issue
an identification card described in subsection (b) to each veteran
who—
‘‘(1) requests such card;
‘‘(2) presents a copy of Department of Defense form DD–
214 or other official document from the official military personnel
file of the veteran that describes the service of the
veteran; and
‘‘(3) pays the fee under subsection (c)(1).
‘‘(b) IDENTIFICATION CARD.—An identification card described
in this subsection is a card issued to a veteran that—
‘‘(1) displays a photograph of the veteran;
‘‘(2) displays the name of the veteran;
‘‘(3) explains that such card is not proof of any benefits
‘‘(4) contains an identification number that is not a social security number; and
‘‘(5) serves as proof that such veteran—
‘‘(A) served in the Armed Forces; and
‘‘(B) has a Department of Defense form DD–214 or
other official document in the official military personnel
file of the veteran that describes the service of the veteran"

But not specifically what agency is issuing these cards nor what the fee is

Of note from the release "We estimate that VA will be able implement the program in 2017. The cost of each card has not yet been determined."

so a program of record and law, but not yet on line, and no cost yet named,, all to be implemented by our ever efficient and honest VA


"On July 20, 2015, the president signed into law the Veterans Identification Card Act of 2015. This act allows Veterans to apply for an identification card directly from VA. The VA identification card will allow Veterans to demonstrate proof of service for discounts at private restaurants and businesses.

Veterans Health ID CardIt should be noted that the identification card is different from a Veteran Health Identification card or a DoD Uniformed Services or retiree ID card. As such, the VA identification cards cannot be used as proof of eligibility to any federal benefits and does not grant access to military installations.

When available, Veterans will be able to request an ID card from VA for a fee. VA is currently making plans to implement the new law in the most efficient and cost-effective way possible while protecting Veterans’ personal information. We estimate that VA will be able implement the program in 2017. The cost of each card has not yet been determined."
