There is a ton disrespect and divisiveness running around lately. Why can't we just respect each others' differences even when we disagree?

Because time and time again, it has been shown and proven that some people just can't seem to keep their noses out of other peoples lives and want to control others based on beliefs/notions/ideas.

Your right to swing your arm ends at my nose. I don't have a problem with your Gun Rights until I feel that others Excesses in the name of "Gun Rights" Threaten my Grandchildren. I live in the Gayest (Is that a word) neighborhoods in Johnson County and If I feel that you are a threat to my Gay Neighbors you are probably going to have a problem with me. I work with more than a Few Muslims, If I feel you are a Threat to my Muslim Co-Workers, you are probably going to have a problem with me. Just the way it is. While in the Military one of the More Important Virtues is a certain degree of Loyalty and I do have quite a bit of that for my Friends and they are quite a mixed and diverse group.

You forgot about politics...lol. Seriously though very good question. With the "explosion" of so many different types of social media platforms available today. Anyone and everyone can post whatever they want. And a lot of them are not concerned with repercussions. They just want to say what they want. IMO no personal accountability. Here's my thoughts:
My political beliefs--no ones business but my own
My religious beliefs--no ones business but my own
My beliefs on same sex marriage--no ones business but my own
My beliefs on weapon ownership--no ones business but my own

See a trend here? Now on the off chance I do decide to share in my beliefs(which I seldom do), and someone doesn't like it, and wants to "discuss" it or try and post some mindless drivel to ATTEMPT to change my mind well that's what we see now. Just turns into "heated" discussions/name calling/arguments(which I find really funny BTW...arguing on the Internet)
