I have had two chaplains report to me over the years, one when I was a tank battalion XO, the other when I was a tank battalion commander. Both were superb. Here is why:

(1) Their loyalty and commitment was to the soldiers (and families - don't forget the families!) of the battalion, not the chair-borne higher headquarters chaplain that was also in their rating chain or even to me.
(2) Though each had an office somewhere in the cloud (at a chapel somewhere), neither one spent any time there. From PT in the early morning to end-of-day formation, they were somewhere in the unit - motor pool, ranges, classrooms, COFT, even, God love 'em, the gas chamber.
(3) They didn't tell me what they were doing. I found out what they were doing from the company commanders, 1SGs, platoon leaders, and platoon sergeants ... and from some of the wives - beneficiaries of their efforts. These chaplains talked to leaders ... found out from them who had problems or issues ... sought those troops out and, in Facebook terminology, "Friended" them ... and their families as appropriate.
(4) They weren't out there to "sell God." They understood that their mission was to provide support to soldiers across denominations or with no denomination at all. Perhaps not so strangely, by not attempting to "sell God", they got a lot of sales, particularly among the leaders in the battalions.

All of the above translates into "find the sailors that have problems or issues and do what you can for them". DON'T wait for them to come to you - most won't. Further abbreviated, "seek and you shall find".

A short anecdote for what it is worth. One of the criteria that the division chaplain used in rating the chaplains, mine included, that fell within his rating chain was attendance at a quarterly "battalion chapel service." I figured this out just before our chaplain held his first one after I had taken command. I asked him how well they'd been attended in the past and he told me he was lucky to get 5-10 people show up. Too easy - I called in the battalion staff and company commanders and announced a quarterly OPD (officer professional development) on Sunday. Wives were welcome. A pot luck dish was encouraged, bachelor officers could bring chips and dip. While this was not a formal NCOPD, the CSM and his lovely wife were invited and attending. Other NCOs were similarly invited as were the soldiers of the battalion. We had a great turnout, a good service, and an enjoyable pot luck meal afterwards. I didn't have a single complaint from those required to attend ... and those required to attend were outnumbered by those that weren't required to attend. Teamwork. The chaplain had earned the unit's support.

Edited to add: I had to train both chaplains on military sermons. Rule one: Uplifting, positive, motivating Rule two: Have a clear beginning, middle, and end - and the shorter the better. Because you’re rarely doing it. Most of your crew, and you, are doing the admin needed to stay ready to deploy. They don’t use a chaplain like active side does, they go home to their pastors most of the time. And not many churches want to lose their pastor for a year, and then repeat the process every few years.
That said, I enjoy it!
To your question. 1) keep up with your records! That includes training. Stay ready for deployment. That’s your job as a reservist. You can be the awesomest chaplain in the Reserves, and useless to your CO if you aren’t ready. 2) more to the actual chaplain side. Deckplate. Deckplate. DECKPLATE!!!! Now that’s hard on a drill weekend, but when on AT/ADT, do it. Sweep the decks, carry the luggage, play trivia nights, stand on the bridge and listen. If I knew how to do gigantic fonts, I would....deckplate Ministry.
Message me if you want more; I’ve been a navy reserve chaps for 7 years, always was a reservist (unlike many, I didn’t do active duty time then switch to Reserves) just got picked up on my first look for LCDR.
Welcome aboard! Upon graduation I wanted to get married. If I was going to do it in the USNA chapel, which my bride wanted, we had to go through a 16 hours of marital counseling. I was a non-denominational theist. My fiancee was a non-denominational protestant Christian. We were assigned a Chaplain for that marital counseling. Once he found out I had not accepted Jesus as my personal Lord and savior, (the first 30 seconds) marital counseling ceased and a full-court press on my acceptance of Jesus as my personal savior began. The goal was not achieved in the time allotted. The Chaplain informed me that he would not sign off on our marriage, that we would not be getting married in the USNA Chapel and that he would submit my request to marry with a negative endorsement. In addition he told me that I was "an uncommitted parasite living off a Christian society." Let's just say the pastor wasn't real big on friendship evangelism.

I quick marched to the senior Chaplain's office and gave a short, terse, but respectful narrative of what I had just gone through. The senior Chaplain summoned our marital counselor and asked these questions:

Is your salary paid by a congregation or taxpayers, many of whom are not believers?
Is that Chapel bought and paid for by a congregation or taxpayers, many of whom are not believers?

The senior Chaplain then explained to our assigned pastor, that performance of his duties was independent of the faith of those he served, and that one of his duties was to perform marriage ceremonies. The assigned pastor stated quite clearly that he disagreed. The Senior Chaplain, pulled out a legal pad and in big block letters wrote "I RESIGN" made an x followed by a line. Told the pastor to sign and leave his uniform at the door. The marriage went off as scheduled, by the assigned pastor, who made no attempt beyond tight-lipped civility to conceal his contempt for the proceedings.

Every other Pastor, Priest, Rabbi, and Cleric I met in the service, without exception, was within a military context was a cheerful friend, a sage advisor, a tight-lipped confidant, and a blessing, regardless of my beliefs or theirs. Be one of those Chaplains. I believe that you should go to the sections that are assigned to you and get to know the those God has called you to serve. People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. God has called us as chaplains, to represent Him before all service members. Have fun with your service members. If they go to the burger joint, go to the burger joint with them. If they enjoy sports, go catch a game with them, if they enjoy just hanging. Just hang with them. The important thing is to build relationships! Building relationships, builds TRUST! Relationships builds the bridge! Without strong, trust filled relationships, you will not be effective. In fact, there is a difference between being a Chaplain and being servicemen’s Chaplain. That will only happen, when people invite you in to their lives to experience good times as well as bad times with them. Then and only then, you will be viewed as a service member’s Chaplain! I'll add this. When I came into the Navy as a Chaplain they stressed the fact that we have to balance the collars. We wear our rank on one side and our chaplain insignia on the other. Hence the need to balance the fact that we are both a religious professional and a Naval officer. I always offer this one addendum to that advice. There are things you can do that will cause you to lose the right to wear the rank and be a Naval officer (PT failures, being out of weight standards, etc.) but you could still be a religious leader in the civilian world. You only lose one side of the collar. However, if you do something that causes you to lose the right to be a religious leader, whatever that might be based on your faith tradition, then you lose both sides of the collar. Stay true to your faith tradition first and learn to be a good Naval officer at the same time. I have seen Chaplains who wouldn't do anything for someone whose religion was not the same as theirs, and morale/unit cohesion suffered. LtCol Shuttleworth is correct. You will fail, or at least not be a very good Chaplain, if you conduct yourself like a church pastor. You are a missionary now, and must be in a relational ministry, going where they are, not expecting them to come to you. It's a ripe mission field, with many who need the love of the Lord but will never come to you for it. Build and earn trust. PT with them. Hike with them. Work with them. Get your hands dirty. Be proactive and a good witness to Christ. Do not compromise your faith in Jesus Christ by being politically correct when it comes to Islam or the Social Justice Warriors or the PC Nazis or the Secular Liberals that want Jesus Christ, the Holy Bible, prayer and the Christian faith removed from the military. Fuck those assholes and that includes some in the military! If someone asks you for a prayer for good weather then be that guy - God has a sense of humor. Most of all you will always be watched by those who are struggling with issues of faith - your walk and how you perform your duty will not go unnoticed - and you will always be a blessing to those who have put their trust in Jesus Christ. Identify some helpers and put them to work - they will appreciate the challenge and opportunity to exercise their faith and team work multiplies your outreach. When in the shit wear a helmet and vest and carry a weapon - some of the most outstanding signers of the American Revolution were ordained ministers. God Bless You! I don’t know all of the reasons why they were so unhappy. I’m sure each situation was due to different causes, but it was surprising. I totally understand why an undesignated seaman working in Deck would be disgruntled, but shocked at the number of RP personnel. Perhaps it’s because other officers only have to worry about and care for one division or one department, but chaplains care for the whole crew. However, the most important advise seems to be omitted, allow me to bring this up now. Ezekiel 33 is a passage every preacher should take to heart. God has called on many to serve him as leaders of his flock. Your first allegiance is to God, not to the military. You will be called upon by God to preach the hard issues that todays world wants to change. Issues such as homosexuality that the military now embraces, adultery, which has always been common in the military, drunkenness, idolatry, and most important that all men are sinners and the ONLY way to God is through his son Jesus Christ.

You have accepted a commission by God to be a watchman. As such you will be judged more critically by God on how you respond to the adversity you will face in the military. Will you stand on his scripture as the inerrant word of God or will you bend the word of God to the desires of man? Jeremiah 5:31 says that the prophets (insert preacher or chaplain here) prophesy falsely and that the people love to hear false preaching that adheres to their way of life. However, if you give man what mankind wants instead of what God says they need, you are the one who must face God under the the extra scrutiny of Ezekiel 33.

I wish you the best in your career. I also hope that along the lines of Joshua 24:14-15 you choose to serve God. This is a choice you must make each and every day. Do not be afraid to ask others, to include those whom you serve, to pray for you that you may serve God. The beauty of this guy was that he fully understood the soldier and did his chaplaincy work through the eyes of the soldier, the officer, and his God. He called me one day and mused as to why I hadn't cour martialed someone who desperately needed it. He was there for the troops. He marched with them, he joined them in foxholes, in effect, he suffered with them and thus, soldiers opened up to their chaplain buddy. When he advised, they listened.

I contend that a chaplain is a combat multiplier. soldiers feel God through their chaplain. He was a priest, a pastor, and a rabbi depending on whom he was dealing with. He could pray Kaddish with a Jewish soldier, Praise Hallelujah with the Protestant soldier, and as a priest administered sacraments and said mass. If you are there with them, suffer through their soldierly burdens with them, and remember that you have a command purpose to assist in achieving the organization's mission, you will do just fine. He went through many trials during his remaining tenure in the service, but held fast to his beliefs. He tried to transfer to become a medic so he could continue to serve, but it was not to be. So, after 12 years of military service, he was Honorably Discharged as a Conscientious Objector, and used his GI bill to earn his Theology degree, and became an Adventist pastor.

He served many communities well, here in the US & abroad, was always out visiting his flock, participating in community activities as long as they didn't conflict with his beliefs and the Sabbath, and was also active in the American Legion. He would visit retirement & nursing homes, VA hospital wards, and was often invited to guest minister to flocks of other denominations. He also did mission work.

He was glad he had served in our military, as it was through his military service he met my wonderful mother. He was equally invested in his life as a pastor, a shepherd, a teacher and of course, husband and father.

He later tried to return to military service as a chaplain, but at that time, cold war era, he'd already passed the age cap for signing up. He instead was called back to mission work. The things I remember most about my father, both from being a 'military brat' & as a 'preacher's kid' ... was his strength in his beliefs, his dedication to his mission, his love of his family, and most of all, his Faith & Belief in the Lord ...

Here's where I'm going with this ...

My father became afflicted with Alzheimers-like Dementia, and after a time, was forced to medically retire from his ministry. Eventually his failing health had him in hospital care for a critical ailment, that had him completely unaware of where he was, and who was around him. For 10 days he spoke, almost non-stop, night and day ... but not ranting and raving .. his faith, was so very strong, that even in the depths of his subconscious and despite tremendous pain, he spoke out, he prayed, he taught, he ministered, he counseled ... family members of other patients started pausing outside his door, some openly weeping to hear such devoutness from a critically ill patient, medical staff would pause during a prayer, all were astounded at how connected to his beliefs, that he could minister in such a fashion, while not conscious of where he was or what was happening to him.

A few years later, upon his passing, as sad as it was to say goodbye until the day comes we are together once more, the joy of recalling how strong my father was, in his service to his country, and later in his many years of devout service under the Lord, continues to help me with my faith, and also during my time of service, his example was a guiding light.

I offer a prayer, that you find that balance of your faith and your service, and the strength to hold fast and be a beacon. I offer my testimony as my father's daughter, in the hopes that it may in some small way be of help to you. Most of all, I pray that your faith, be strong and pure ... that if a day comes where you find yourself in the darkest depths of pain and despair ... that your voice from within ... is guided by your Lord and beliefs, that all those around, may see the brightness of that light, and hear the words, the devotion, the love you have for your flock and your Lord. That any conflicts between your faith and secular, your trust in the Lord that you are not walking alone, will sustain you.

I thank you for your patience, and wish you well, with Fair Winds and Calm Seas. I think for a number of reasons the military draws, and I will use our chaplain's words from my XO tour, a lot of walking wounded. You will certainly deal with Sailors and Marines wounded through the course of action or otherwise. But there will be a lot of folks who need the structure, regimen and camaraderie of the military. When the vision of the military they joined doesn't match reality (and it rarely does) those wounds can open again. I have seen and taken a lot of people to Captain's Mast (the absolute worst part of the job) who could have been helped out had we helped to recognize early on what those wounds were. That is where you come in. Certainly there is no expectation of you having insight into everyone's being, but as mentioned a number of times in this post if you are out and about, you can help them heal their own wounds.

I would also add that the chaplains we had during my XO and CO tours were amazing. Both helped me personally better understand what our Sailors were going through. Both served as a sounding board for me as I worked over what to do for or with Sailors in many cases. As a Buddhist, they were not there necessarily for my spiritual needs, but they were fantastic counsel. This is especially important if you're speaking at a memorial service for multiple people who's faith is unknown to you.

I've heard some chaplains give talks that were very heavy on references to Jesus when memorializing a group of people where it's relatively certain that some were not Christian. One I heard literally made he hair on the back of my neck stand up.

I've also heard others who give eloquent, moving memorial speeches that are meaningful and relevant for everyone from a born-again Christian to a Jew to a Muslim to a Buddhist. The "best" chaplain I ever served with played second base on our company softball team. He was out there with us enlisted guys, having fun even when we lost! Always there for us grunts with an ear and a hand, telling jokes and always trying to clean up our language(and failing!) Point is, he was THERE, not in some office, or chapel, and that meant the most!! From what I saw as an enlisted soldier, the best advice I could give you is to just be there. Know what the sailors and marines in your unit are doing, be around, be approachable. You never know what a simple “How are you today?” might open the door for.

God bless, and thank you for answering the call to this area of ministry.
