I just completed my ASVAB and will discuss my job opportunities next week. Should I continue with my plan to be an infantryman or change?

I was originally aiming at an 11x opt. 40 with the army, but now I wonder if I should try for something else. It still sounds awesome and I’m at the age where it may be my last chance to try it, but I did not expect to get my score. I want to follow my family tradition of combat arms as I will be at minimum a 4th generation army member if I choose this branch, but now I am wondering if I should have talked to other branches about more technical jobs. Is pursuing my family tradition of combat MOS at least once worth it? Will these scores follow me into my next Re-up if I choose to change jobs/branches after I try my original plan? I am excited but also now struggling to choose. I go to MEPS in two weeks for my physical and oath, do they also offer you jobs from other branches in addition to what you’ve reserved when you sit down with them? Do you think I’ll be given an opportunity for OCS in my contract with my scores? Thank you for your input and knowledge, I put my scores at the bottom for reference to the above questions and for any insight you may have in using them to my advantage.

29 years old, Bachelor of Science degree, AFQT: 96

Army - GT:131, CL:130, CO:125, EL:127, FA:126, GM:125, MM:121, OF:125, SC:129, ST:128

Air Force - M:93, A:96, G:96, E:92

Navy/Coast Guard - GT:129, EL:247, BEE:246, ENG:114, MEC:174, MEC2:190, NUC:250, OPS:259, HM:187, ADM:128

Marine - MM:122, GT:129, EL:127, CL:131Fri, 28 Dec 2018 22:34:51 -0500I just completed my ASVAB and will discuss my job opportunities next week.

Seems like you're uncertain. Perhaps you want to ask yourself a few things. What are your goals. Where do you see yourself? Do you think that you'll enjoy infantry. I submit to you, don't choose an MOS based off of a family tradition. They've lived their lives and now you have to live yours. Consider all your options and perhaps jot down some of the pros and cons of each one. If you're an at least semi-religious man, go to God in prayer and meditate on your decision and let Him be your guide. No matter what path you choose, stay positive and give 100% at it and strive to be your best everyday. Keep us posted on the path that you choose and good luck to your. BTW I believe it takes a 110 GT Score for OCS so if you already have your BS, that may be an option.SPC Private RallyPoint MemberSat, 29 Dec 2018 00:19:53 -05002018-12-29T00:19:53-05:00Response by SSG(P) Private RallyPoint Member made Dec 29 at 2018 12:21 AM

While I understand that you would be 4th generation, don't plan your life according to others.

In my opinion, you should follow through with your family tradition. It is clearly an important factor to you, and it would likely create the most regrets for you to have passed up (you're right, we aren't getting any younger). If there is another MOS you are currently interested in, you should plan ahead for when you want to make that transition. That is, how long do you want to remain Infantry before you re-classify? In my many years as a CI Agent, the majority of in-service recruits I assessed for reclassification to Counterintelligence were Infantry Soldiers in the early years of their careers (4-8 years). They'd got their fill and wanted to try something different.

Having a perspective of what it's like at the ground level of combat operations can be quite important to shaping a Soldier in another MOS. Nobody knows better than an Infantry Soldier how bad a mistake in communications, intelligence, supply, finance, CBRNE, etc, can be. Bringing that perspective to another MOS later down the road can help to enhance that field's ability to function with a greater purpose. It changes from people doing their job because they are supposed to, to them doing their jobs because they truly understand that another Soldier's life could literally be on the line.SFC Private RallyPoint MemberSat, 29 Dec 2018 00:40:15 -05002018-12-29T00:40:15-05:00Response by SFC Private RallyPoint Member made Dec 29 at 2018 2:22 AM

I can only speak for the Army and not other branches. But, for certain, no branch is going to offer you jobs from different branches when you talk to the MEPS counselor. Whatever branch brought you in is who you are going to.
If your goal is to be an officer in the Army, stick with your current job and go to OCS after you have been in a little while. Going into a technical field is a red herring in your case. There is absolutely no reason to spend an extra 6 months to a year in school learning a technical skill that will put you at the bottom of a career field that will take several more years of experience to earn a civilian certification/accreditation in. You would be throwing away all that time once you go to OCS and become an officer. Your time would be better served in a combat MOS letting your leaders get to know you and developing your leadership skills. Maybe even attending Airborne and Ranger school. Those will get you the glowing letters of recommendation you'll want for your OCS packet.
As for your scores, they are yours forever. You won't be allowed to retest because you scored high enough for everything. When you reenlist you could change jobs, not branches. The only way to change branches is to ETS and then enlist in another branch as prior service.SFC Private RallyPoint MemberSat, 29 Dec 2018 02:22:38 -05002018-12-29T02:22:38-05:00Response by SSG Private RallyPoint Member made Dec 29 at 2018 2:59 AM

To be honest with you, unless you plan on being law enforcement, mercenary with a contract security company or work for DoD after military career, then I would say go ahead and do infantry......... You can probably Branch select to one of the Combat arms.
