Our mission was in support of the PL2 aircraft, and not so much law enforcement. Incirlik was a great place. The Turks, both the military personnel and civilians, were always very polite and easy to get along with. And the food was awesome!

In June of this year, they had a potential coup attempt, and that kicked off FPCON Delta for a while. I expect that will be an ongoing threat. I can say that when I was stationed at the 'lik from 89-90 the 39th SP Flight (actually was not designated as a Squadron but a Flight (political reasons)) was very tight knit. We definitely worked hard though. The Turks are scared poopless of K9s and we had to be very careful of how we employed them. I worked on the Law Enforcement side of the house so had daily interactions with our Turkish AF counterparts who were always courteous and professional.

The "alley" aka the village of Incirlik was a great place to hang out during off duty times. Weekend trips down to the Mediterranean were much fun as well. If you are an ancient times history geek, great place to geek out.

Not sure if it still holds true or not, but back in the day once you got inside of USAFE it was easy to stay there. You could actually do a dream sheet picking the individual bases within USAFE once there. I rotated to England after my time in Turkey, cheaper to keep you over there than send you all the way back.

My AF experiences overseas were far better than my experience stateside. At the time I was there my family came with me Joint assignment. I was the NATO rep for the USAF in Turkey and was also responsible for all WRM and bed-down of any U.S. forces deploying to Turkey. If you respect the Turks they will be the best folks you've ever met. Prices are cheap, food is great, and it's usually party central. I spent over 250 days TDY in country. I visited every military base in Turkey. Incerlik is one of the best kept secrets in the USAF. Large base with all the amenities of a US base, located close to the Mediterranean, some of the resorts near there are fantastic. If you try to speak a little of the language the Turks love it and will treat you very well. I was there 87, 88, 89. things have changed politically but I'm sure the people haven't. It's already changed since then due to security concerns (now unaccompanied, and down to 12 month tours). Currently, you won't get to experience all the freedoms we used to have like exploring the local area and walking the Alley. With that said, it was an amazing experience I would recommend to try. Since it is such a small base, it is a very tight knit group and leadership is always setting up events to keep you entertained. There are tons of rotators out to Europe as well, so you can take leave in Germany or wherever you choose to experience the travel bug. The weather is great, the people are nice and Turkish food is awesome. If you joined the Air Force because you wanted to travel, I wouldn't turn down this opportunity.
