I know there is a certain time frame that I have to be on station. Is there a way for me to let my branch know I want to go recruiting but can't submit a volunteer packet yet because I have to be 12 months on station first.

You are confused- there is a difference between volunteering ( 12 month station time) and DA selection ( go when they say). Yes you can talk to HRC at anytime

Yes. I am currently a detailed recruiter in my 4th year of recruiting. Once you are DA selected for recruiting or Drill, those orders Trump everything. This exact situation happened to me.

It is ok. Just like any other duty station it is what you make of it, the people you work with and your leadership. I am in Chicago. Most definitely be prepared to be in a non conventional Army. No PT wake up, that's on your own. No PX/Army base. You will most likely be working in a shopping plaza or inside of a mall. The best part about recruiting is the lives you get to change. So many people out here need the change. Also if you are still a SGT....I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH! Please try to get whatever schools you need and want to accomplish before coming out here. Besides NCOES schools (ALC,SLC, STATION CDR COURSE ETC)....there is no opportunity to go to school for the next 3 years of your career. You will however work long hours. especially if you land in a station that is sucking with their monthly mission. A typical day is 0900-1800 sometime longer when you have to conduct people like High school students and their parents. Also be prepared from time to time to work Saturdays. Also be prepared to not get as many 3 and 4 days as you are used to in the conventional Army. Where the conventional Army may get a 4 day...we may get a 3 day in USAREC Command....Where the conventional Army may get a 3 day...we may get no 3 day at all in the USAREC Command. Overall the assignment is a good broadening assignment and will be favorable, as you know once you are being looked at for SFC and above. Take your 3 years in stride and enjoy the experience with a positive attitude, otherwise your 3 years will be a long 3 years.
