Make sure you get a US Army tattoo before you leave. Drill Sergeants love it when Soldiers show that much pride and motivation.

If it’s any help or consolation I showed up at basic as an underweight smoking and drinking nineteen year old (been doing that since I was thirteen) and lo and behold here I am still alive and kicking Basic will not kill you,it is tough and demanding but it has a purpose ,one you will find as I did that if you don’t quit anything is possible, good Lord they even made me a Sergeant of Infantry!

Evidently Phil, you met the challenge. Now you Strive for excellence and Set the Example. Stay true to the cause and the never-ending Brotherhood will forever stand shoulder to shoulder with you. Remember, once accepted you belong forever more. Now Sergeant, get out there and lead by example! Never tell a subordinate do to anything that you yourself won’t do.

MSG Louis Alexander -First, thank you for acknowledging my post and it’s meaning to a young enlisted, sadly I did not mention these events took place over fifty years ago, so I am sorry if you were given the idea I was still serving ,that being said the words still ring true,be well Brother,Phil.

And train like you would fight. When it's time to fight, you fight like you're the third monkey on the ramp to Noah's ark...and brother, it's startin' to rain heavily.
