I'm about to PCS to Fort Bliss in December. Any advice for housing or anything that can help me get ahead of the game. Thank you

Make sure if you are renting off post check the route to go to work traffic is kind of crazy and with ac no swamp cooler it gets hot like 109 and swam coolers only cool your house 20 degress from outside

Just left there in May. There is a TON of new housing being built in post at Bliss. The new housing us worth looking at. The old housing you should run away from. You will know the difference. I promise. If you plan on staying off post the market is a little tough. Rental prices don't offer much left over for use of utilities but if you look hard enough you can find something. Staying on post also offers you all of the wonderful new amenities Bliss has to offer. It is quite the impressive post. I actually have a friend that has a home available off post if you are interested. If you have anymore questions shoot me a message. I would love to help you out.

Housing shouldn't be too hard to secure. There are some really nice houses 2/3 bedrooms on East and west bliss for a little under 1000 if you search. I can send you more information if you give me your email. I left Bliss back in 2013 and I loved it.

I loved El Paso. I recommend that you live off post and on the West side of town. It does not feel like an army town on the West side.

West side of post! We lived on the East side for a solid year and we always traveled to the other side because we hated the east. There was nothing to do over there and hardly any solid shopping.

Use the AHRN website to look for housing. Do not use Balfeur Beaty on post they are crap to deal with. There is offpost housing there through post that is not too bad. West side is nice but long commute at night with traffic. Also more expensive than eastside. Lots of nee housing being built on post. Overall great post.

Extremely hot and windy most of the time. Freedom crossing is extremely nice and so is the commissary. The altitude is gonna be an adjustment as far as running if you're not used to it. Depending on the unit or Brigade expect a lot of time in the field.

Depending on what you're looking for in terms of housing and commute. Fort Bliss is actually not that bad of a duty assignment. I am currently here and will be leaving in October. I bought a house up in the NE, which is in my opinion the best part of town. It's a mixture of local and military population but far enough away from post to enjoy. Only about a 20 minute drive, but like the earlier comments said, it's pretty easy to navigate with expressways. My home will be available for rent upon my PCSing and I would be more than happy to have a tenant lined up for my departure. I currently have a 3/2 with a nice sized yard, which is rare for El Paso and I'm pretty sure 975 is about the cheapest you'll find in that neighborhood. If you want to live off post, it will really depend on where your unit is located. I would definitely recommend the East Side near loop 375 and Montana Ave/Edgemere roads. (All of the Tierras are behind Edgemere) My commute is usually 15-20 minutes to East Bliss from that area. If you're looking at being located on main post, you'll want to look more at either Northeast or West El Paso to avoid a bad commute.

If you can get on post fairly quickly, that would be a great option. They've been building new housing on Bliss like crazy, and they look pretty nice. If you are going to live off post, it really depends on how far you want to drive. West and NE are where the newer housing is being built. West is a bit nicer, but has a longer drive, particularly if you are going to 1AD. If you are with Division and living off post, I would recommend looking at the far east side. Nice housing that way, plus still is a shorter drive to work and closer to shopping and entertainment.

I would suggest you find what side of post you will be working on prior to choosing where to live. I.E. Main Post Vs. East Bliss. I personally would not live on post or in gov't off post housing. Fort Bliss is a good opportunity to save money. There are certainly one bedroom apartments that will run you $1000 a month. However, like a previous poster mentioned several 2 and 3 bedroom new houses with fenced in yards for $900 a month. Also, if you look really hard, especially near Central you can find some gems. I like the older neighborhood near Manhattan Heights/Central Area...some do not, but I pay around $600 for 2BR house, w/ 2 Living Areas, 2 car garage and basement. If you like to get out and be withing walking distance of some of the best restaurants, bars, etc. I would try to get near Mesa St near UTEP...technically it is not the downtown area, but it has a typical downtown feel to it.....If you do not mind the drive...Las Cruces, NM is nice to and isn't that far depending on which side of post you work.

Do you know which unit you are going to? Being a gun chief, I would guess DIVARTY, but which BDE/BN attachment? I'm in 3rd BDE (formerly 4th), which has 4-1FA attached.

If I'm right about being assigned under DIVARTY, you will be working on far east Bliss. There is plenty of good housing around (both "on post" and off). It depends on your priorities, whether you want to live closer to work or in a nicer part of town.

Off post, Either North East, far east or west side (longer drive, about 30 mins). Avoid horizon. Look for refrigerated air , avoid swamp cooler/evaporated air. I have a 1500+ square foot house, with 2 car garage, jacuzzi, 3 bed and yard for $1000, even with utilities and cable I pocket some BAH

It is what you make it. If you like the outdoors and don't mind the heat, you'll be fine. If you don't have a really good run time, start working on that now, because the altitude will affect you for a bit. Affordable housing is pretty easy to find once you get your assignment.

Definately live on the West side of town. There is plenty of housing and the UTEP area is pretty nice!
There is a lot to do in El Paso. Not sure what the deal is with crossing over to Juarez these days...probably a lot tougher security then back when I was stationed there! Good luck!

On post housing is pretty good. Just don't get Logan Heights, they're the slums. If you want off post to rent or purchase, you're best bet is the far Northeast region. Good homes for good prices. The East area is okay, but you'll get stuck in traffic on the freeway during the rush hour times (plan ahead).
If you can get Rio Bravo, on post housing, you'll have it made. It's condo's but it's very centrally located and brand new!

Housing on post is okay, but if you prefer privacy outside the Northeast is cheaper but there is crime in that area. I rented for over 2 years on Alabama Street near WBAMC Hospital a condo named "Independence Place". Right now I live on the East side and there are lots of houses for rent, the problem here is traffic 375 is crowded all the time during rush hours. If you have kids, there is a brand new elementary school named Purple Heart on the east side; on post you have Milan Elementary which is very close to Rio Bravo Housing Area.
