I’m an 88M NG going active duty. What are some good warm weather duty stations for families?

Thinking about Ft Sam Houston, Ft Beninning, Ft. Jackson, and Hawaii. Which one did you like the best and why?

The only good warm weather site you mentioned is Hawaii. Believe it or not, Ft Sam does have winter weather.

Fort Hood is the best place for being an 88m! Mostly warm weather year around. But it's part of the "big 3" (Fort Hood, Fort Riley, and Fort Stewart). Meaning Fort Hood is always on the rotation list for Korea and Operation Atlantic Resolve.

I did AIT at Ft. Sam Houston, and San Antonio is a great city. Or at least in the 60's it was. I was at Ft. Sam in the late 80's. and there is alot to do in San Antonio. The Riverwalk is great for eating and shopping for the wives. And there is The Alamo, and very even temperate. It isn't that far to Dallas, Austin, or Houston. IMHO it is a great place, but maybe possibly a bit political.

Times have sure changed...as a Staff Sergeant, you basically are subjected to the "needs" of Army and you go where your MOS is needed, and not because your family wants to go to Hawaii on the Army's dime...warm-weather assignments?...the Middle-East (sarcasm) still has plenty of slots available, but they're unaccompanied tours.

Don't rule out Ft. Stewart. They have done a lot of improvement in the last 10 years, it's not a terrible town, and Savannah is awesome if you like city. Plus the beach is 45 minutes away.

Don't recommend Benning. Town is awful, services are always clogged up with Tradoc.

I didn't get to serve in any other location, so I can't tell you much about them.

I would focus on larger installations that you are most likely to be offered. Fort Sam and Fort Jackson are not likely to be offered to you.

A lot of people like Bragg (there are non airborne units), Campbell, and Stewart for sunshine.

For things to do and family oriented, FT Bliss is the best post I have been to in mostly warm weather. You can do long distance shooting for free on BLM lands, camp in the mountains at Cloudcroft, and the amenities for school age children on post are incredible. It is also a safe city, far safer than San Antonio.

ROFLMAO, SSG what post is known for warm weather...all of them and none of them. Once you roll out the gate, the weather changes to bad. While Hawaii sounds great on paper, they have Typhoons/Hurricanes, earthquakes, Volcanic eruptions. All of the places you picked have their degree of Suck. But all bases suck, and all bases are great, depends on who you ask.

Fort Irwin. Youll know when you have mission and what days youll have off a year in advanced and your 2 1/2 hours away from the coast.

Update : Big Army Needed me as an instructor @ Fort Polk LA. It was the only vacancy available for E6 @ 88M unless I reclassed To a shitterer MOS. I guess I got half of what I wanted lol. Time to embrace the suck. Thanks for the help guys.

I would recommend Ft. Steward and more specifically 10th Trans at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah.

Staff, unless you have a direct assignment for a 88M ...you getting Jackson, Benning is pretty slim (Tradoc) unless you're going to be an instructor of some sort. However, Hawaii could be in your best interest if possible.....there are 88M slots for your MOS. Good luck.

FT Sill is a good one plenty to do in the area , prices are good for food and rent , a lot of family activities in the area. Lawton is a decent town not to big.
