YOU'LL BE GETTING REAL BEER (YES, I'M YELLING). Enjoy Germany. You will have a blast. Privately they love us. Publicly, their press/media is as crazy-ass as America. Pace yourself on the food and learn some key phrases in German beforehand. Its considered polite and will help you immensely. Always keep a stock of Euro's on hand.

Single?

"Heaven...I'm in heaven..." Yeah...it will be a blast... Married with kids? You'll see more fantastic landmarks than your wildest dreams. Also a ton of great history landmarks there. The train station is a bit of a jump from the front gate as well. Germany is a great assignment, get some basic German down and Prost! You get a three or four day weekend every month, so take advantage of it. There's way too much culture to stay cooped up on post. You don't need a car to get around, there are busses on post, and the local taxis will pick you up on or off post. The train can take you anywhere in Germany. MWR has a building on post where you can catch organized tours to all the famous landmarks, and I recommend doing those for the famous tourist traps, but don't limit yourself to those. Get out and visit the less popular places. Downtown Amburg is really cool, great place to just go walk around. Nuremberg is an hour away by train, and was considered the "most German of German cities" by Hitler, so he built it up with a lot of Nazi party history, but it's also where the Holy Roman Empire would meet in the castle, and the cathedrals had to be rebuilt after the war, so one is set up with the history of that.

Don't do what I did, and waste most of your weekends playing computer, nor buy a new car and have to make payments that limit your ability to get out. I didn't get out until my last four months in country, and all my best memories are from those four months. Go to JKO and do the drivers training now, your U.S? License is only a pre requisite for getting a USAREUR license. Go to millerhats.com and buy a Stetson especially if you plan on being a leader there.( not a requirement but it helps to buy into the traditions). If you are married do your command sponsorship now not after you get there. Have fun and look up operation Atlantic resolve it will drive all your training. You will be gone every other month if not more. Get out and see Europe when you have time off. It is what you make of it. And learn as much about strikers as you can it will be you taxi for all training they fairly rail load those things. And yes I just left there 18 months ago. I was in A troop 1-2 CR “WAREAGLES”.
