What information or input would you have for someone transitioning from AD to NG and reclassifying into 11B or 19D?

I’m interested in transitioning from AD to the National Guard and reclassifying. I’ve reviewed Cav Scout and Infantry. Any tips from 11B/19D, or NG SMs? Looking at the state of Texas.

Talk to your In Service Recruiter / Reserve Component Career Counselor.
It's a mandatory stop for clearing active duty, but you can set an early appointment to get information.
You can sign that contract 180 days prior to your ETS, and the contract is effective the day after your ETS, (but give it another week after that before you try to get a new CAC).

There is more 11B than 19D, so it makes more sense to go 11B. if you want to see the Cav, (if TX ARNG has one) the C Trp is 11B also.

11B is a 4 week transition course, taught in several states, don't put it off, get it done your first year.

And don't base your decision solely on an MOS you think you want, seriously consider what units are closest to where you will live, work and/or go to school.
TX is a big state, don't choose a unit that's a 900 mile drive for drill.
If OK or NM units are closer to where you will live, check those out, too. You don't have to live in the state of your unit, and it's just easier if your unit is closer.

The 124th Cavalry Regiment is a United States Army Cavalry Regiment, represented in the Texas Army National Guard by 1st Squadron, 124th Cavalry, part of the 56th Infantry Brigade Combat Team at Waco.

Don't and don't? Going from the big leagues to the JV is one thing, but doing it AND choosing useless MOS's that don't benefit you in the real world in terms of skills, certification and education is just going too far...
Transitions are an opportunity to get something worthwile. Don't waste it.

11b is great combat/defensive training and experience, but it only really applies to law enforcement work on the civilian side unless you do contract work which is usually picked up by the group and other sf dudes. Dont do it unless you know thats where your heart is at. For us infantry guys, we do it because we love it!

Depends on what your looking for , when I was 19d we had to deal with maps and overlays a lot , had vehicles (m151 mostly) had a m60 , spare barrel bag and at least one radio to keep track of , had morning meetings at a CP or TOC lots of reports and even more training, prolly changed some since back then , I liked the way it sucked

SGT Private RallyPoint Member I loved my time in the infantry. Wouldn't trade it for anything. That being said, I wouldn't change your MOS to infantry. When you get out, you're going to want a skill that can be transferred into the civilian world. Stick with your current MOS and use your GI Bill.

Don't do it! LOL! I never adjusted from being a Regular Army 19D to being a National Guard 11H. Glad I had the chance to go back on active duty.

Well cav is not bad mos but they work hand in hand with infantry however some cav are mechanized some are Humvee others are ground i was cav on ad and i enjoyed the training till i was sent to Alaska

I agree with a comment about looking at units closest to you 100%…also if an infantry unit is close and you want to do the job just for the experience definitely do it…the culture in the infantry is awesome from my experience 2009 to 2013. NG is a great component with great benefits. I left active for 6 years and now I’m in a signal unit in the guard. Just look at trying to drill close, and utilize the benefits available to you.

I served along time ago, was a 19D10. Armored Cav. Scout, oh what a ride enjoyed it.
