I was not impressed with Roberts. Very few amenities, especially when all the Soldiers for those exercises are coming and going are all on base. It has a small PX, a gym, dining facility, and rows upon rows of decaying WWII era barracks. My uncle attended basic training there during the Korean War. He described it as, "kind of run down". Not much has changed. The CALGUARD runs the facility. Unfortunately, the CALGUARD does not conduct business very efficiently. The local town, Paso Robles, is small town American and a common destination for wine tasting. Also, make sure you have a POV. Paso Robles is about a 15 min drive from site (The north side of Paso is) and DO NOT repeat DO NOT even look at apartments north of 24th and spring (Ghetto) it used to be black listed (when I was there) Even if it is not, don't live in that part of town. also, stay away from Dry Creek apartments, also ghetto and they have a bad habbit of charging you for things that were there on move in. The place is so run down that it looks as though it is going to fall down with the next stiff breeze. The eco-nuts have prevented the updating of the base, so plan driving to get home every night. You will have a lot of time to decompress on your drive home every day, since even the scenery is dull and drab.
My only question is who you pissed off to get such an assignment? 5th SIG is not a cake-walk assignment, but I am not sure it deserves Cp Roberts. An option is also to contact the unit to ask if any soldiers will need a roommate around the time of your arrival which could save you some money and stress. Also be sure to have all of your paperwork in order as with any PCS. Good luck on the transition and if you have any issues I'm currently stationed there and may be able to help.

-SPC Clark SPC Private RallyPoint Member Thu, 08 Oct 2015 15:20:24 -0400 2015-10-08T15:20:24-04:00 2015-10-08T05:01:36-04:00
