I medically retired in February. When can I expect my first disability check from the VA?

If your decision notice shows at least a 10% disability rating, you'll get your first payment within 15 days. We'll pay you either by direct deposit or check. If you don't get a payment after 15 days, please call the Veterans Help Line at [login to see] , Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. ( ET ).

Transitioning servicemembers become a Veteran on the day of separation. S/he cannot be in receipt of payment from VA and DoD at the same time. Assuming the Benefits Delivery at Discharge (BDD) claim for compensation was completed prior to separation, then the effective date is the first full day after separation. And the first payment, would be on the first business day of the following month for the just completed month post separation. If the BDD claim is completed prior to separation, then there won't be any retroactive pay. But, if the BDD claim is completed two months after separation, then the new Veteran could be eligible for two months retro (depending on separation pay, etc.) beginning the day after separation.

SSG(P) Metzinger, If you applied for VA disability compensation prior to your retirement date, your date of eligibility will be the day after your retired. As to when the VA will provide you with a decision on your application for service-connected disability, that depends on how complex and how many conditions you claimed. The good news is that whenever the decision is made, you should receive a letter within 10 days and your initial payment should include "back pay" from your date of eligibility. Depending on where you are, an accredited agent can check on the status of your claim.

Was granted my 3 claims in Aug., 23, 2018 by Judge BLACKWELDER, completed 3 more medical evaluations in Jan., 2019, process was completed & turned in through these 3 doctors to the VA, received letter from VA stating I would be notified by mail with my compensation checks & retroactive monies. Today is May 8, 2019 & still waiting for my disabilities monies. Should it take this long ? Filed 13 years ago, got put on the ADVANCED DOCKET in Jan., 2018 because of my age, I'm now 82. Any information on my granted claims would be greatly appreciated. Jerry, Flat Rock, Michigan

Injured my right leg and Loss of hearing I receive compensation for my right leg I do not get compensated for my lost a parent although the VA has given me hearing aids but has not given me any money for my hearing loss and ringing

I retired in aug 2012 and got mine in dec 2012
